About ReOS:
ReOS is a mechanism for replacing the old closed-source BeOS System, now owned by Palm Inc., with Open Source replacement components as they are developed. By providing an easy mechanism to track, install (and, if necessary, safely uninstall) new components as they are developed, we hope to encourage the development and adoptation of the replacement parts being developed by avid users worldwide.
As new and replacement components are developed, ReOS will grow into a full (Linux-style) distribution of the new child-of-BeOS. As a bonus, you can use it to manage the software on your BeOS system now. ;-)
The ReOS Manager uses a directory of package description files (updated via
CVS through an SSH tunnel) which describe software packages and how to install and uninstall them. To install a package, it calls a set of
Perl scripts, which use Wget
to download the actual software package from its home site, and then installs it. For installing the ReOS system itself, as Perl cannot be depended toexist on a stock BeOS install, we use sh scripts to install: the /boot/reos directory, WGet, CVS, Perl, SSH and the ReOS Manager.
The ReOS installer will install all these components for you.

Details about this version:
WARNING
This install package contains ALPHA software. Though the author does actually run this on his main machine, you are hereby warned NOT TO! It will almost certainly not do any damage to your box, but that is a VERY big "almost". ;-)
That out of the way, I have not yet damaged anything on either my desktop or laptop computers, and the majority of the bugs I know about are in the GUI or are unimplemented features (such as that the Manager cannot yet _uninstall_ something after installing it ...). So you SHOULD be safe.
CHANGES
Since 1.0.1a1, the following major changes were made:
1) fixed several bugs in the install/remove scripts
2) added the ability to register icons for the Be Menu to packages and for the manager to construct a Be Menu for you
3) changed author/porter/maintainer information in package window to use the URLView class instead of BStringView (this is _really_ cool)
FEATURES
This version can:
1) keep the packages tree synchronized to the server via CVS/SSH
2) fetch distro/source/doc files via WGet
3) install all dist/source/doc packages
4) present a clean heirarchical view of the packages and their attributes and status in the Manager
5) remove source/doc packages (removing a binary is dangerous, so the GUI will not let you do it till it's been more extensively tested)
6) manage your BeMenu for you
It cannot:
1) let the user configure preferences
2) sort packages correctly in the sisplay (they sort alpha, not by version)
3) filter packages to be displayed by license or other attribute
