About FTP-FS:
FTP File System allows to mount a FTP server.

Warning
This is alpha quality software use at YOUR own risk!
Downloading files from a FTP server should work, if not, please file a bug report.
Uploading files is experimental and does not work reliably. Do NOT file a bug report in this case.

Features
  • Has low requirements on FTP server. Creates a single connection to FTP server.
  • For better performance, mirrors contents of FTP server on demand. Uses a file cache.
  • Visualizes file state in icon (whether file data is remote, being downloaded or mirrored).
  • User initiated refresh of directories and files from FTP server.
  • Automatically reconnects to FTP server if connection is closed.
  • Reads already available file data while file is being downloaded.
  • Automatically uploads entire file that has been changed, after it has been closed.
  • Prioritizes directory downloads over file downloads and small files over large files.
  • Download is interruptible by higher priority download.
  • Client-server architecture for file system, to avoid hard crashes in the kernel. Kernel space file system add-on delegates operations to user space ftpfs_server.
Limitations
  • Attributes are unsupported.
  • Symbolic links can not be created or changed.
  • Single directory or file download at a time only. As long as a download is in progress other download operations with lower priority are delayed.
  • If /boot/home/ftpfs is open in Tracker before mounting a file system, the file system can not be unmounted using Trackers Unmount menu. The Folder has to be reopened with Tracker. This is either a bug in Tracker or FTP-FS.
  • Volume capacity is always reported as 1 MB with 0.5 MB used and 0.5 MB free.
  • Tested with FTP server for BeOS, Linux FTP server version 6.5/OpenBSD, linux port 0.3.2 and Cerberus 2.1 for Windows. Need feedback about using FTP-FS with FTP servers on other platforms.
Bugs
  • Dano/Zeta crashes when unmounting a FTP volume.
  • Unmounting is not always possible. Sometimes Tracker and/or Deskbar have to be killed and restarted, before a FTP filesystem can be unmounted. Open Team Monitor by pressing CONTROL+ALT+DELETE to kill an application.
  • Killing ftpfs_server while a FTP file system is mounted is a Bad Thing.

2008/10/24: All applications published by me on BeBits are now officially unmaintained.
