May 12, 2001:
As is being announced around the 'net, Douglas Adams died today of a heart attack at age 49. We apologize for the off-topic update, but we here at BeBits are huge fans of the works of Mr. Adams, and we are deeply saddened by his death. We have spent countless hours listening to the "Hitchhiker's Guide" radio shows, reading the books, and so on. You may have caught many subtle references to his work around BeBits, and even our server Marvin is named after a character of his (Marvin the Paranoid Android).
Douglas Adams was an amazing author, an insightful social commentator, and an all-around funny guy - if you haven't experienced his work we highly recommend that you give it a try. Meanwhile, as a poster on Slashdot said, "If you measure a person's value by the happiness they bring to others then we are an immensely poorer world today." So long, Douglas, and thanks for all the laughs and for the memories; you will be sorely missed around here.
