May 31, 2001:
Well, as some of you may have noticed BeBits was broken for most of the day on wednesday (May 30th). The problem started when our power cord managed to work itself loose from its outlet and broke the electrical connection. That of course caused the box to instantly turn off.
This alone was bad enough--especially since no one was around to notice for a few hours. But to make the situation even worse, the sudden power outage managed to destroy the filesystem on the partition that contained all of the web sites on our server (including, of course, BeBits).
Amazingly enough, our backup process managed to complete before the whole system went down. That means the entire partition was restored and we only lost a few hours worth of logs (the databases are stored on a different drive for exactly this reason, actually).
To make a long story short, BeBits is back online now and all is right and good with the world. Well, a little better anyway. Maybe.
