There was a Radeon 9200 on sale for $50 Canadian so I went and got it, and now I don't need Vesa anymore. How do I uninstall this so it doesn't pause to switch video modes in the middle of the boot screen?
Thanks,
Kev

Yes, it is. The old S3 cards do not support the VESA 2.0 standard, which is required by BeOS and VESA Accepted. Get a newer card, even better a supported card, like a second hand Matrox or something. Shouldn't cost more than $15 or so.

old P166MMX laptop (GFX chipset : chips & technologies

it's OK.
I get 8 fps with the teapot demo.

BTW, to use these VESA 3.0 utilities, make SURE you are under *100% clean* DOS, not Windows or Windows-to-Dos restart. Running these graphics drivers under a Windows session, might end up destroying your board or your Windows.
If you do not know how to load a clean DOS, then do not bother with this advanced tip at all, just use the plain VESA 2.0 extensions that 'VESA Accepted' supports, at 60 Hz, and do not bother further.

You all know that VESA 2.0, the standard that BeOS supports, only allows 60 Hz of refresh rate on the monitors. But 60 Hz is not good for your eyes if you are using a CRT monitor.
You might want to try one of these MS-DOS utilities out *as long* your (unsupported by BeOS) graphics card is VESA 3.0 compatible:
http://www.informatik.fh-muenchen.de/~ifw98223/vbehz.htm
http://unirefresh.demonews.com/
Tell BeOS to use VESA by using 'VESA Accepted', install one of these utilities under DOS, switch the
resolution and refresh rate you want, and then load BeOS through DOS, via the C:\BeOS\loadbeos.com application (you will be able to load with that either BeOS PE or PRO).
Now BeOS will use the refresh rate you told DOS to use!

I was using a Trident card for a while & used Vesa. imo it worked fine but there was a catch. I tried the Vesa accepted app... grey scale. So being the tweaker/hacker freak I am I decided to look at the script. The Vesa Accepted app set a video mode of 640 X 400!!! So I corrected the script & YEEHAW COLOR! The system I did it on wasnt for intense useage so the speed was totaly fine. Now if only there was a way to use the TV OUT on ATI cards!!! ;)

I recently installed BeOS Pro 5.3 on a spare WinBook XL just to see how bad the hardware support would be. As I suspected, the number one problem is that the Chips & Tech. 65554 2mb VRAM video card is not supported. But, I knew that the VESA Acc. driver existed, and I thought I would give it a try. First, let me say, the default 640x480 graphics in Be did just as advertised and used 50% of my CPU cycles according to pulse. I knew that most people using the VESA setup wrote in to say thanks for the high-res color display, to bad it is so slow still. Well, after setting my VESA display with the little VA app to 800x600x8bpp the display looked just right, and the CPU usage dropped to about 5%... awesome I think! So I try the laptop at 800x600x16bpp - cpu usage went down to 0% on pulse!!? Amazing. Not exepected. Sure, the window draws are a little slow when moving a large window around screen - but that is no big deal for general usage of the laptop. Another thing, GL Teapots under the 8bpp mode got *fewer* fps than in 16bpp mode - nifty. I suspect it has to do with not needing to dither or something - but still cool. Good stuff.

I just can't get this thing to work. 'Program is too big to fit in memory' is the message I keep getting when I execute it at the command line. ( If I double-click it in Windows a command window flashes up for a split second and does nothing )
I have a Pentium 4 1.7GHz Processor
512MB SDRAM
50GB Hard Drive
Windows 2000
NVIDIA GEForce2 MX Graphics Card.
How on earth do I get this to work? A number of other people on your site have asked the same thing. Is there an answer yet? Can I please have a reply from anyone who knows the answer to this.
Trying to Play Championship Manager 97/98 on our new PC and we keep getting 'No VESA driver'
I tried Univesa but this didn't work either.
Please Help.
Best Regards,
John.

Installed BeOS 5 on my laptop, new to the scene, got this nasty 640x480 greyscale screen and a warning.. Okay, this is an old laptop, 166MMX, 32mb Ram, some crap video card I've never heard of. Windows runs 800x600 MAYBE with the wrong drivers. Right drivers give me 640x480..this thing's been through hell. I was about to give up and spotted this. 1024x768x16. I didn't know the card could DO that! RIGHT ON, man, keep up the good work.

I have a Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 (the one with 64Mb RAM and a Kyro II inside; the 3D Prophet 4000 has 32Mb and a Kyro chip) and, well, it works on my PC! Hard to say that it works "well" (it's VESA, so "slow", unlike for a real driver), anyway I can use my 19" screen in 1280x1024x16b .
So I can say that Kyro-equipped cards packaged by Hercules supports well VESA modes (works well under Linux using the Frame Buffer driver).
But as usual on our wonderful PC's, sometimes "cool things" happens like by example some kind of sound cards refusing to work with some other kind of video cards. "What? No sound due to the video???" Right. PC's. Try Macintoshs.

This is great! I thought that I couldn't get BeOS in color on my old ATI and that I would be stuck in 640X400 Grayscale, but this gets me my 800X600 and 1024X768 at 16-bit depth.
Not as fast as a real driver, but at least I don't have to suffer as bad until I buy a supported card.

I loaded the Personal Edition of BeOS and was very upset that it would only work in black and white. I was scouring the Internet for a driver for my video card when I found VESA Accepted on BeBits. It was the best BeOS download I have ever made.
