32x32xbitdepth=1024xbitdepth too big? I guess R5 and Dan0 have 8bit colour

"You can't replace a folder with one of it's subfolder(s)" I got that when I wanted to make a simlink in the parent folder (Desktop) off an app wich was in the folder with the same name.
Rather than an error a rename option-dialog would be nice. An idea to make it even more user-friendly.
Thanks Axel it really shines.
PS: I wonder about your some years old now video recorder app, should I give it a try?
Your the best ;-)

I say that there should be a tracker option to not look for directory icons, since this is a slow down issue. The plain folder icon should be displayed instead of looking for the custom one. Any how there seems to me like if you tweaked the right things and left out some of the extra features used that take up too much time that could work.

This is one of my biggest complaints with Tracker too -- always has been, even pre-R5. It's improved gradually since Tracker became OpenTracker, but not enough to really fix the core usability problem. With a few hundred to a thousand files in a directory, it takes forever, especially on the first pass when it isn't cached.
I think it has something to do with loading the icons from the files, along with any attributes (which can be used as sort criteria) before displaying them?
One possible way of accelerating it might be to display the file names first, then fill in icons and other attributes on a second pass, similar to what Windows 98 explorer does. Obviously this would only work if you were sorting by name, size or date, but since those are the most common sort criteria anyway, it would definitely help. Doing the same with the pop-up menus (Be menu, secondary-click menu, etc.) would also help the feeling of responsiveness in the OS a lot.
Any idea how feasible this would be to implement?

I have a directory with many folders and the tracker takes too long to show them all. However, when I am in the terminal and use 'ls -w9' all the folders are shown just about instantly, so why cannot the tracker do this? (I use navitracker if it makes a diff)

If you can't reproduce the problem with OpenTracker, I cannot help you - even if I wanted to, the sources of NaviTracker have never been released to the public.
Anyway, that the add-ons start to work again might be "accidental" - something you did might have caused BeOS to flush the add-ons, but don't ask me what that could have been - without the sources I can only guess.

I use navitracker and I created a 4GB BFS partition. From in /development a strage problem occurs. No folder can be created. When I right click everything above 'List View' is missing like New>Folder. It is as if the partition is read-only. I can, however rename files and everything else. I have to create directories from the terminal.

As I said, it's a system wide limitation of BeOS. When the add-on space is full, there is nothing you can do besides rebooting. Poor, but that's it.
Haiku doesn't have any limit on add-ons - but that doesn't mean you can open millions of it if you don't have enough RAM and swap space ;-)

Error loading Add-On(Background-B): No Error. Even when I restarted the tracker. How come when I restarted the tracker the add-on limit does not reset? And who is in charge of maintaining the add-on memory... when does it get empty, why does it fill up and not manage itself accordingly ? If the limit is completely removed in Haiku does this mean that the memory just keeps on getting eaten away?

I noticed that when i test haiku, the image i mount to drag file to my haiku partition only show in the app SVM and in the tracker master root "/" and not in the tracker pop menu of when we click on the desktop.
On a semi related note, is the fix i did read about in haiku CIA some time ago about being able to unmount a device even if a query or something refer to that device will make it into a "R5able" tracker or is that haiku specific? Not that it's that much an issue right now but i can see that becoming a real pain if someone want to use a USB HD.

Does that only happen with FileTypes? I never saw that error particularly, but having looked at the sources, that's exactly what will happen when load_add_on() fails - I've fixed that now (the wrong error message), thanks!
I would guess the error itself stems from another BeOS limitation: there can only be 32 MB of add-ons in your system at any point - after that amount is full, you cannot load any other add-on afterwards. That limitation is somewhat lifted in Zeta (IIRC it's 128 MB there), and removed completely in Haiku.

What makes you think he didn't? He sure did, but we were just not able to resolve the issue. And as it's working fine over here, I am 100% sure it's not an OpenTracker issue.
IOW you have to wait for Haiku to resolve this, sorry.

I've heard of this problem before, but since it works fine over here with plain R5, as well as Dano, it might be a problem of another component (maybe the input_server? For reference, I used the German keymap when testing).

The current timer is computed after the double click speed you configured - I've no idea why it's done this way, but on my system, it's less than 2 seconds. I think a fixed time would make sense.
Anyway, if you press the "shift" key while dragging, the delay is shortened to 0.2 seconds - that should help you until I change how the delay is computed :-)

the title say it all :)
I have a Download directory (have we not all have one). To quickly sort my stuff i have most of the usual directory i send file to as symlink there. That way i can put stuff where it should go and i'm happy.
The problem is that to not get lost in windows all over the place i like to use the feature that allow maintaining your "drop" over a particular directory until the directory tree structure pop up. All work fine but there is a 5 sec delay that start to anoy me more and more. I can understand that this timer should not be too low because poping too fast would bring it too easily when unwanted, but at is current value it make the system feel unresponsive.
What i propose is to reduce it to 2 seconds. Any problem about that?

Jess, I have been keeping my Tracker project (for PhOS/Dano/Serenity/Haiku (when ready)) up to date and current, but just not on-line. My source will not be opened as of yet, but it is very stable and effecient (I utilize around 4~16MB of memory usage for Tracker w/ PNG icons).
Internet should only be a couple weeks away, and I have a lot to release (mostly for testing) at that time, so just stay tuned.

PPC build fixes will always be added to OpenTracker as long as BeOS R5 is supported.
There were no changes necessary, though, as we have some contributors that keep an eye on PPC compatibility, most notably Alexander G.M. Smith.

It shouldn't crash BeBoxen. What you experience is probably the same BeOS bug that appears on R5 x86 as well. Anyway, this *might* have been worked around by this release, but your mileage might differ.
Anyway, just download the archive and have a look - if Tracker is a tiny application, it's dynamically linked.
I don't understand what you mean by the availability of source changes - this is an open source project.

To AlienSoldier: Yes, I also noticed that shortly after the release. I will fix it for the next point release, thanks!
To El_Al: Tracker is using private Be API, it won't run on Haiku unchanged. It has been ported to Haiku, though, and the Haiku version is up-to-date as well (so there is no need to replace it, anyway).
To Matt: thanks for the offer, Oliver was faster than you this time, though :-)

Thanks for the note! Sourceforge did not only change (again) the repository locations (I forgot to update the starting.html page, but I did that now), they also remove your crontabs from time to time.
I've now rebuild a new sources archive manually, and installed a new cron job so that it should be build automatically and nightly again.

Actually i don't miss all those eyecandies from current version of NewFS, but rather quite fundamental things, like those functions in navigation bar text form, which look very native to BeOS idea - like live filtering with metasymbols, or handling there not only folders, but other files by Enter key - just applying default registered handler - like opening texts in StyledEdit or images in ImageViewer.
Live filtering is absolutely fantastic faeature, actually i lost any need for special ftp-client, using it together with ftp-fs, but this is true to any other fs.
