Thanks for fixing the links axeld!

Could someone post an x86 binary somewhere for me from the newest sources? Or share it on BeShare? I have been unable to download the sources to build it myself and the "Update OpenTracker" app failed to do anything for me at all.

Jace, thanks for the hint - I completely forgot to change these values since Pete gave me the BeBits entry. It does now point to the correct location.
I haven't updated the description yet, but I will soon (hopefully I will be able to do this with a new release).

OT Developers, change links, Please!

Could you update all the OpenTracker web page links in the BeBits listing so that people can just click to get to the site? Right now, people have to look through all the feedback entries to find the valid URL.
Thanks!!

Desktop folder issues and file system representation

How does MacOS (classic, not X) handle the actual Desktop? Is it a folder like in OS X and Windows? I know that Classic MacOS has a Desktop Database file that is hidden to all views. This stuff is only visible via tech apps that allow you to see hidden items - and there's a lot less of this junk on classic MacOS than there is in Windows. Windows litters your harddrive like crazy and so does OS X on non-HFS volumes; it is FREAKING obnoxious! Since you can rebuild desktops and all desktops on mountable volumes are automatically integrated, I never really cared to see where the files were actually stored. Not dealing with multi-user nonsense until OS X, I didn't need to.

Whatever is done with OBOS in the future, let's try to remember to focus the UI towards normal humans and not towards hackers. I'm in agreement about the Home folders being made on all BFS volumes issue, too. I think somewhere along the way, OS developers forgot that the hard drive was a container for the user, NOT for the OS developers. Why can't ALL OS stuff be in ONE root folder called "System?" Classic MacOS had it right. Everyone else fails. Even DOS (the files in the root are needed to boot). Today we have junk all over the place: "My Documents," "Program Files," "Applications," "My Music," "My Pictures," "Documents and Settings," all the shortcuts and duplications caused by profiles in Windows and OS X, and even all the crap in our posix compliant BeOS file hierarchy that normal people don't give a toot about. I wish we could just strip all this junk out of each of these operating systems.

That option's only selectable if you have the deskbar in expanded across the top or bottom of the screen. If it's in one of the corner configurations, it's not usable.

More semi annoying stuff

I'd like to toss in one other thing. Currently not only is it a pain at times to deal with the missing desktop folder but also the fact that every hard drive with bfs has to have a home folder. - This annoys me cuz while I know its there to house the "Trash" for that volume (actually in the desktop /home/Desktop/Trash) it clutters up things. Also the fact that OT does not actualy MOVE anything between volumes when you slect MOVE. This is a REAL pain in the butt cuz it only copies & then it's up to you to delete the source. I'm not sure why they have not fixed that yet as it seems such a basic & easy thing, but I could be wrong & certain other thigns in the structure of how OT works makes an actual MOVE between volumes a rough chunk of code work. Anyway hope this stuff is fixed or addressed soon. There are some MUCH needed other features in areas such as option to clean up & arrange folders contents ( date name created etc ) Also how Tracker arrages things by default in icon views. By this I mean the fact that folders & files position are stored as meta data (attributes) & so some times if you install software or files from some one elses system a folder will try to sit where one of yours all ready is resulting in files & folders hiding under each other. Be is so wonderful yet missing so many basic things still, but we'll make it cuz we're insane... INSANE!!!! (echos off into a dark night)

Hidden Desktop

Current version when comment was posted: 5.1.5
I think there is the chance that this will change; at least I am alost annoyed of this "feature".
I don't have a good idea to do this, though - I think the best solution would be to move the "Desktop" directory into "config" and make it visible there. But *this* change can only be made with OpenBeOS (and control over find_directory()), and may break some applications.
At least I hesitate to just make it visible in the main home folder, which is already much too crowded in my opinion (hey, this is "My Place" after all).

Non-boot desktops

There is an option with open tracker to integrate non-boot BeOS desktops. Not the perfect solution, I know, but will let you get at those files stored on your other BeOS partition desktops, without having to go through the terminal.

Is there any chance of removing this useless limitation in future versions?
How is one supposed to get to the file and folders on unmounted Desktops (Desktop folders on unmounted partitions)?

What about other file managers? I think that neither in-depth nor MC come with this limitation.

UI design conceptionalism
 By looncraz - Posted on December 5, 2002 - 15:23:00   (#4608)

~/Desktop was hidden by Tracker so fiercly because of a Desktop-oriented GUI design. I personally dislike this 'feature'. I constantly need to open folders on another partition's Desktop and must use Terminal.

I think the folder ~/Desktop should not be visiblefor all users, but if one navigates to ~/Desktop a seperate set of preferences for that folder is created.

Why 2 sets??

Well, one set tells the folder it has a BRect of Screen().Frame()... making it full screen to the max. And of course background info and arrangement

The second set should be setup as a standard folder which is used when Tracker is manually asked to launch this folder..

Fun ;-)

So guys, do you know why was the Tracker designed to hide the Desktop?

No. I know Axel wanted to merge some of NewFS features,
but he's working practically alone on OpenTracker (ok, not really alone, but some more help would be appreciated =)).

Has the NewFS version been merged to the main tree?

It had great performance and usability enhancements.

BTW, does anyone know why I can't view the Desktop folder in a Tracker window? this odd behavior also exists in OS/2 and MacOS<X file managers, it is such a nuisance.
At least OS X now does it almost right, and Windows explorer always has.

You could use CVS

OpenTracker
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.opentracker.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/opentracker co opentracker

You will need beres to compile.

OR, you can get a near-current version by downloading the SmoothOT, which will soon receive an update to the latest with a new icon set.

Why would you want to port OT, when one of Windows' main advantages over other OSes is the truly excellent Explorer?

If you want to convince Windows users that BeOS has features to lust for, port BFS. Although I'm not sure if Windows can use foreign file-systems. Existing NTFS drivers for Win98 hint that this is not such ao far-fetched idea...

What about using a real OS ? ;)

But if you want to port it, I don't see why you wouldn't..; but remember, Tracker makes use of attributes to store window positions, and also many "undocumented" BeOS calls that you'll have to add to WinBe only for Tracker (well actually not all, but for most yes).

I have been talking with WinBe developer, & thinking of what Cosmoe is doing to essentially use OT as a way to get Athios with Be APIs working on Linux kernal.

My question for any developers is what do you think of OT ported with WinBe to Windows? Ofcourse alot of the functionality would be lost on Windows, but the idea of Tracking on Windows would thrill me to death. I would include cygwin for the shell, & if WinBe continues to develop, some new BeOS apps could run as well.

use the settings panel in tracker itsself - in the old days you made the changes via the script but if you dnot do it from Tracker it just over wirtes your changes with what it has in memory... open a window in tracker... you have 2 options ~file & Window~ click window & at the bottom you will see settings... use that...

I was a bit nervous about trying this app at first. Lots of flakey system problems, ones that probably were not directly caused by the "stock" Tracker, finally made me desperate enough to roll the dice. It has performed beautifully for several months now. I can still manage to kill it, but I really beat the snot out of my machine, so I expect it once in a while. I can hardly wait for the next official OT build!

My old Deskbar that came on Beos R5 Personal edition from a magazine cover CDROM was currupted somehow from the
CDROM and it seemed to be very unstable. With Opentracker 5.1.5
I have no problems now even though some have had problems using it with Rage 128 Pro chipset and other video cards. I am using it with the Rage 128 Pro and updated driver on Bebits. I am also using an Epox8KHA+ motherboard and AMD Duron running at 1100 MHZ.
keep up the great development work.

You guys booting into a blank screen with nothing but the cursor is an app_server conflict. Boot in safe mode nuke the settings & if need be recopy the updated app_server if you have an updated cd kick'n 'round. reboot par `tay! With the curosr at hand in some cases you can still get the team monitor to come up. In that case you can see everythign has loaded but even though you can launch apps via spicy keys 7 such the apps will launch but can no longer create their "windows".
