Slow

This is a pretty cool program, but I had a few problems with it.

First, list the controls in the readme. It took me a while to figure out what they were. (A,S,Z & X for anyone who doesn't know)

Secondly, on a 300 MHz computer, the games ran at about 1/2 of the normal speed.

Thirdly, it would be really nice if the emulation started automaticly, after you load the rom.

And lastly, Super Mario Bros #1 won't work!

Fix this stuff and you'll have the best, nay, one of the only good emulators on BeOS!

regarding broken links

Links should be fixed for the next release, which will hopefully be by the end of August. The major things that still need to be done are: work out final kinks WRT the DMC channel, and also loading and saving configuration and options.

As an aside, I always "leak" more recent test builds on BeShare -- my nick is scanty.

Broken links?

Is it just me or are the links broken. As it seems you are still active why not update the entry?

Hello,

I'd like to get another public release out the door, mostly because a lot has changed since the last release. The new BeOS vidoe core does software and hardware (via overlay) BViews, in addition to BDirectWindow, and full screen. Windowed modes work at any bitdepth, but fullscreen is forced 8 bit for speed. Drawing code is hand-rolled MMX ASM for additional speed gains. A big thanks to Caz Jones for many suggestions, help with BeOS issues, and providing some nice bits of MMX code, from which I've learned, and worked off of. Note, MMX will be required to run Pretendo from now on.

As far as the sound goes, a longstanding design issue with the BeOS audio output code was solved, leading to better performance. After rewriting some parts of the NES APU core, I'm happy to say that all five of the NES sound channels are finally emulated properly completely (probably a few minor bugs, though). The last thing I plan to do with the sound code is filtering. Currently, the output from the APU core is very "raw", and doesn't sound quite right compared to a real NES. My hope is that a low pass filter will help correct the problem. If anyone has any info regarding the filter(s) used in the NES audio path, don't hesitate to share it ^_^.

Most other changes are internal, and not worth mentioning here. Before another release, I'd like for some people to test it out. Drop me a mail, or find me on beshare (scanty) if interested. Please don't ask me for ROMs.

beta 1 currently in development

Just a short message to all Pretendo fans. I am currently working on Pretendo 0.30 beta 1, which should be a nice, full featured release. I wrote a new C CPU core which is endian neutral, so Pretendo now runs on big endian systems (think Dreamcast!). The sound core is now 99% complete, with DMC finally implemented, and only an obscure bug in the noise emulation to work out. I've made several improvements to the BeOS code (especially video), and parts of the NES core will be undergoing major overhauls to keep things cleaner and more portable. Additionally, there will be state saving/loading, and some other goodies. Release sometime this summer.

a few comments.

the full-screen mode is nice. none of the other nes emulators on bebits do that.

one thing that could be improved is the readme. i was hoping to find which keyboard buttons did what and i didn't see it anywhere. each of the nes emulators here uses different keys.

also the load/run/stop/unload interface seems a little more complicated than it needs to be. this is probably planned for a future version, but a simple open would be better. i always forget to stop the rom i'm using and try to load another. this locks the program and i have to kill it.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I really appreciate it. The next release will have full sound, new C and ASM CPU cores and a bunch of other things.

congrats!

I been go'n at it. It plays lot's of carts Nesticle can't or that require a patch. Also says alot of roms aren't valid carts but whatever it will be great in the end. First 2 runs full screen ran at full speed now I find it runs full speed for about 2 seconds then slows down. Some times going back to tiny windowed mode still leaves it slow. Some times it speeds back up. One thing that Impresses & baffels me is even when it slows down it's still sooo smooth. If it wasn't for the audio I'd probably not realize it for a while ;) The ability to stay smooth is very impressive to me. It has a really stable mature feel the to video. I really hope to see our emulators mature & get to the point where a p133 can at least run all the 8 bit & original 2 16 bit console games. I look forward to seeing this develop as Nes, Neo-Geo & Turbo Grafix 16 are my main loves. Thanks man this is really cool & a GREAT start! I'm very excited about this.

glad you like it :-)

Wow. I didn't think I could get a reaction like that! As you can see it's a little rough around the edges, but runs most carts rather nicely. I'll resume development after a small break. Have fun playing NES on BeOS :-).

Ok, I'm probably best known for screaming about how our emulators bite compared to other os's, but I figured I'd be cocky & fire up Solar Jet man first off. Yeee haw. Nice even in full screen runs full speed! VERY Nice!!! I'm not impressed... I'm blown away. Some bad 4$$ work man. So the only question is if this is Alpha I can't wait to see the finnish app. I'll shut up now but man I'm SOOOOO blown away. You gave us a wicked x-mas present & all I can say is thank you!!!! HOLY CRAP!!! (Runs off into the distance yelling...)
