Animated GIFs are definitely different filetypes than their still (single-frame) cousins. The translator may not know about them. It could also be that it does, but the app doesn't know how to provide information about which frame(s) to convert to jpeg.
Until this issue gets figured out, you might want to see if Anime (by Daniel Switkin) can pull apart the animated file into its component frames and then use MPC to convert them. It is app #60 on BeBits.

This program is wonderful for those of us that collect massive amounts of *cough* pictures. ;-)
Seriously, it is a great program, and well suited for making thumbnails.
One bug that I've seen is that the program can choke if you try to convert animated GIF's to JPEG's. Perhaps that's the problem with the Translator though.
