Go tell everyone that you want BeShare to have color prefs in BeShare. If 100 people sign the petition color prefs will be added to BeShare. (I don't understand why it would not be added anyhow, i think BeShare is ausome and any way to improve it is great)

Well.. now I can't see again

BeOS DNS client cannot use DNS from the wrong network

i had a problem with dns in Be that had me re-install 3 time before i figured it out. dns would fail EVERY first attempt of a url. then, the url would be found easily. if i waited 45 seconds, the dns cache would expire and the dns client would fail to retrieve it again. i found that this problem was due to my using the dns servers from my office instead of the dns servers for my cable internet service. the dns clients on other os's didn't have this problem on the same hardware (LindowsOS, Win9X, QNX). fyi - i was using a realtek 8139 nic. since i changed the dns servers to the correct ones, all my problems went away. both sets of dns servers were running windowsNT4.

Maybe....

Forgot to add, I use x.x.12.1 as well as the original DNS servers x.x.12.2 & x.x.12.3

So my DNS registar reads
x.x.12.1
x.x.12.2
x.x.12.3
*Note: your DNS servers may be different.

Well, not sure if this would make a difference, but my cable modem had connection problems where I could connect to some servers ( specifically Instant Massager ) and not to everyday web sites like Yahoo, Bebits ect... However after running several test on my network and watching, I learned something. My ISP only gave me two DNS servers to use. Those being x.x.12.2 & x.x.12.3 Needless to say I tried x.x.12.1 and that fixed the problem instantaneously! Now, however, my ISP is with a static ( non-changing) IP, not dynamic (changing IP). Never using ADSL or a dynamic cable IP, I don’t know if this information would be helpful. I guess I will find out.

BTW , hey don’t worry Looncraz “we” all know you have plenty of problems : )

FINALLY!! Someone with a fairly similar problem as me!!

I just upgraded to cable and I have very similar troubles. Only two servers work for me. zurgs and neoplasma.

I have almost come to the conclusion that it is actually the fault of my BeOS NIC drivers (Macronix patch for BONE). Let me know by e-mail your system configuration and I will see what we can do to remedy our troubles.

Problems connecting

For some reason I cannot connect to most servers. BeShare tells that me "connection established" and then immediately disconnects. None of the most commonly used servers work, I always get disconnected. Some small servers do work. I use ADSL connection. Any ideas?

VitViper has said if we can collect 100 signatures that he will add color preferences to BeShare. This can help the color blind & other optically disabled people as well as just saving normal users from the bland white backgrounds black text that blast us with light all day. You can sign the petition at http://www.PetitionOnline.com/BeShare/petition.html

stevieylover that was NOT the intent. If you want to see rude you should go searching through my other posts. Infact you are the first person in this situation that I did not flame, but you have taken it as so. I hate to say it but looncraz was quite right. the misscommunications where funny, but ni regaruds to me saying I wish I could find this stuff funny but can't has a much deeper issue to it. The point would be technology is around us more & more every day & realize it or not it runs your life. Why to do you think the y2k scare happened? cuz the computers go down the world will slow down immensly & much will be lost. Such bank records for months till they get workign computer systems or organized thier paper backs ups... your bank DOES have paper backups right? The point is while your right we where not born super computer genious's my point is more & more people are walking through this day & age not know & not wanting to know & what you dont know WILL hurt you. There are so many technical & immoral technology bills going on right now by the time the mass public wakes up the computer in their home wont be for word processing it will be so the governmet knows what time you took a dump. If you want to leanr great we WILL help you if you can put aside that you feel this was getting off on the wrong foot. You also have to understand that we get alot of people asking for help that do not even understand what an operating system is & do not know there is more then Microsoft Windows out there. So they come here & ask questions & we try to be helpfull & after many frustrating posts that make no sense it becomes obvious they aren't running BeOS. stevieylover if you ARE running BeOS then just to be clear you can't download a sound blaster. That is a piece of hardware & if we could download physical objects well... hell cars would be obsolete. Also Gateway will have NOTHING for you but system spec & maybe a rare bios upgrade if you are running a non Microsoft operating system. So stevieylover if you are indeed trying to learn & running BeOS I suggest downloading BeShare http://www.bebits.com/app/1330 & talking with the people in there. BeShare should almost be labeled live tech help not a file sharing app :p - The point is being rude was not the intent of the following posts, but a dialog about how many missfired posts there are from windows users.

Sometimes these people are rude out of fun..

Sometimes people around this community are a little rude for laughs.

I have seen it time and again. When I first came around back in R3 days, it was a very polite group of people. But as our user base approached a million, it started changing.

Fortunately, we do not have a lot of arses that feel it to be cool and fun to write computer virii. But, we do have a great deal of individuals from all over the world with vastly unique senses of humor.

Also, unless your nick is feminine, you are always considered as a male first. Mainly because we males tend to be more vocal and 'gung-ho' about technical 'things'.

So, if you think someone is being rude.. look at it with humor in mind... you might just get the joke!

Hi,

I wouldn't touch this whole exchange with a proverbial 10 foot pole, but here are some places you may want to look for additional help:

http://forums.begroovy.com (check out the forums called "Hardware Problems" and "BeOS Support"

http://www.thegreenboard.com (see "Getting Started")

http://www.gobe.com/beossupport.html (this is for the Pro version; if you are using the free PE version, there are only very minor differences. You might actually want to start with this one)

Good luck!

First, I am not a guy! Second, you didn't have to be so rude!Third, I am a first time user, I never owned a computer in my life. So give me a break. What, were you all computer geniuses when you started out? You people shouldn't be allowed to post anything here! People come on these sites to try to accomplish something and what do you do? You get nasty. G-d forbid someone should ask for help! There should be a way that we can weed out the rude one's such as yourselves, before we ask a question. Maybe next time someone comes on here and asks a question, you can act like civilized people and think that maybe that person is a first time computer user, and maybe you can go easy on that person. Too bad, I had to be the example.

First off you need to post on the subject your talking about your replay was about the ESS driver but you posted it in reposne to a beshare thread. Secondly no that spec does not help me. As I said contact Gateway & find out what the Audio is thats whats important not the cpu ram or hard drive. Thirdly if you didn't pay for it then GOOD! heh Ok so next post do it on the ESS issue not BeShare & let me know what the Audio REALYL is in the machine & then we can talk. Also have you made sure you dont have a irq conflict?

Okay, I have a router, Cable internet access, and BeShare woes.

Ozone connects fine. BeShare does..kinda.. I just never get a user list, lr actually appear to logon after connecting to any beshare server.

I have never heard of this.. probably because everyone afflicted with it is not able to connect and talk about it...

Anyway.. will keep looking for possible cures.. I'm using BONE, btw and a linksys router with DHCP enabled. Firewall disabled, ports 7000~7050 forwarded, and now DMZ enabled on this PC to make it seem as if I was connected directly to the WAN (modem).

I seem to be having a firewall problem myself, which is throttling my outbound post limit.. it's weird.

---

If you can find out details of it's make, model, that would be helpful to then direct you on how to access it.

Most routers are accessed via an http server running on the device.

You would then connect to it like so: http://10.0.0.150 (assuming that is the router's ip.)

Up pops a configuration screen, usually prompting you for a name and password. Once you are there, you can tell it to forward ports 7000-7500 to the firewalled pc.

Tell the router to refresh itself, and then test out BeShare.

Even without doing this, BeShare is capable of connecting to the internet if you set up your BeOS machine properly to connect via the router, or gateway machine on your nextwork.

You might want to check the Gateway ip in the BeOS Networking panel.

All else fails, as the local IT guy at work. I'm sure he will agree to let the machine out to play once he sees that it's a vital tool for coding collaboration, and instant technical help. ;)

(doesn't hurt to show him the oodles of divx and other media too... in case that is his interest too. ;)

BeShare signal to noise ratio is VERY low. Except when that slacker Jeremy is on. And minox too... and mariux.. and mmu_man.. ummmm. did I miss any? Oh... right, Shatty...

;)

/me dons his abestos suit.

Hope this helps you out.

Well your not a reckless programer your a good programer & thats why I ask you to add these features. I am still NOT a programmer so implementing these features would be a tad over my head for a long time to come. Again I agree with much of what was said on the other side - parents cannot lock their kids away legally heh & at some point they are going to see the world can be a horrible place. I also make these requests as I have had certain concerns brought to me from other people. I also worry about these things. I remember when I first sat down on a net connected computer... ah the joy I did a search for nintendo & lo & Behold!!! I got 14,000 hits from the search engine of which at least 80% where "LIVE TEEN SEX" It's a tough call at times where safty or preventitiveness becomes cencorship or a hinderance. I know my kids are allways looking for games when they get a their computer time & man If I ever got left alone in a room with one of these Online Casino guys.. well you get the idea. Our kids can be wise beyond our perception of them but they are still kids & do not have to fore sight or perception to discern things like "GAMES" "Casino GAMES" or what ever BS pop up scammed out spam crap they come across. If they had the ability to fully understand they wouldnt be kids. Most parents can tell their kids dont talk to strnagers but they dont have these new life rules drilled into them so at every moment they dont have this sub consious sub-routine saying </Dont/talk/to> ~/$strangers - the result - they talk to strangers. I disscuss many social issues with my children but again the out side peer pressure & such will always be a fight for parents. The hope we can get them to come to certain understandings before they get in a bad situation is an ever present battle as by human nature we want & NEED to learn things on our own. You can be told "Don't do that!" a million times, & you can have why you shouldn't do it explained to you as well, but most people may know they shouldnt do somthing but do it anyway cuz they have to find out for themselves. We are a silly lot. While this behavior can lead to good things & advancing of thought, skill & about any other things we have come up with, it has also lead to countless burned hands, scraped knee's, lost toys, & worse. I have had my own Muscle server running at times but frankly it's hard to find what your looking for on the large servers never mind one with 3 people :p. While most the major BeShare servers enforce good rules most people dont read the rules at logon as they have a billion things fly by with logged people & such. So they come on swearing & such till some one points out no swearing & so forth... not a huge deal really but if we are going to as a community try to help BeOS survive it would be good to have these features for those who would want them, myself included. Parental safty is a concern. I feel there are many things that might not be super important but could really up the range of people that would consitter the technology as useable. The filter engine for swears could be first implemented in the query section. It would also be nice while we have catsup to be able to search the chat like a text document... For those of us who aren't using logging. While people can always say rename "BeOS R6.zip" "Franks Vacation video.zip" & share it Admins could also filter certain content to make the rules a tad easier to enforce. The filter could be activated server side when the admin isn't around. It could be made seamless & replace the swear with a non offensive equivilant. Not unlike alot of the filters & options most gaming servers run really...

Go for it then

Jess,

You have every right to parent your kids the way you see fit. Since BeShare and MUSCLE are both open source, you even have the right to develop your own content filters for either or both, and run your own server that attempts to censor out anything you don't like. In fact, I encourage you to do so. You'll probably find it a valuable learning experience, from both a technical and sociological standpoint. ;^)

But I am simply not interested in developing that type of software, because I don't think it will work, and because I'm not enthused with the idea of using technology to dictate what people can or cannot say to each other.

Your reckless and irresponsible programmer,
Jeremy :^)

i agree that world aound goes razy, it's more violent every day. but i doubt putting some filters will make world a better place. i agree with jaf that You have to tell Your children what is what, what You believe is wrong etc... You can't close Your children at home, throw out (or filter out) tv and comp etc.. someday Your children will see what human-world is anyway.
Those things will not dissappear from world just because You turn on some filters (which BTW aren't, and will not be, 100% perfect). They can dissappear with time, if ppl will teach each other (but not by force) that world can be a better place, that ppl can live without fighting each other all the time... no i'm not hippie, but i believe that children are human future - world will look like how humans grow their children.

your so wrong

While you have some good points that is not why I ask for the filter. If people can get by & swear by using leet then you simply didnt make a good filter leet & adding spaces like "F A R T" are common tricks & while there are certain servers that allow swearing & some that not it is a good feature for adults that would rather not deal with a slip or two. People are offended on differant levels some are tolerant some are not. While kids going to school will offer them a variety of words & activities that most perants wont agree withthat does not mean we should sit back & simply let our kids swear or watch violence & sex on tv. We can't always be around & unless you put a lock on the door with the computers you should have a way to protect your self & your familiy. I find your remark about letting your kids see a prn link & hope they can walk away unbothered or what have you reckless & irresponsible. Yes our kids will be exposed to thing we do not deem acceptable among other things but as perants it is our job to tech, guide & protect our kids from hamr & pronography is harmfull to kids like it or not. I think we have enough of a problem teching our kids that contrary to pop culture violence IS NOT entertainment. Kids cartoons are just violence for the sake of voilence. fighting & more fighting - it's allways going to be fighting. Then on the girls side we have these slut like over make-up'd Britany Spears chicks that make our daughters think their worth is measured by how much flesh you show & how skanked out you are. When I encounter people like you that are seemlingly overly complacient with the things our kids will be exposed to that fall into the bad factor it makes the hutterites & amish seem to be a reasonable comprimise.

No.

Ignore for the moment the fact that putting a filter on BeShare would lead immediately to everybody typing out every swear word they know just to see how the filter works and what they can get away with. Ignore the fact that everybody would just swear using 37337 C0D3 to get around the filter. The fact is that if you allow your children go to school, play with other children, or leave the house, they've probably heard them all already. Your best course of action is to sit down with your kids, explain to them what obscenities and pornography are, how they are used, and why they should be avoided.

Once your kids understand that, they will be able to handle the occasional obscenity or pornographic link without lasting psychological damage. If you think they are too young to understand, then you probably shouldn't let them on to the Internet at all. In either case, you won't be around their whole lives to shield them from the world's disagreeable thoughts, so more they are encouraged to think for themselves, the better.

Swear words are just sequences of letters, like anything else. The only thing that gives them shock value are attempts to forbid them, which inevitably end up fetishizing them instead.

So... Jeremy...

I was wondering since you wont add color/scheme support how about parental filters>? ya Know many of us are dads & mom's & want the best for our kids thus BeOS ;) but we need those filters fro when we are making supper & the kids claim to be doing somthing other then trying to look up snufffilms.com obscene.org. It would just be nice to be able to set filters that blurb out swearing & obscene comments as well as possibly blocking links that would lead to these things. While this would be alot of work & possibly tricky do it for the children & besides... think of all the fun you can have if you set certain swears to certain self derogitory phrases... i.e. make it so every time some one says the F word it will show up to users using the filter as:
anonymous: Man I went to the computer store to buy an extra long IDE cable today & they didn't even know what the (I'm St00p1D) I was talking about!!!
Make the filter fun make a huge pile of replacement words & phrases & have the filter randomly pick a selection to fill in for the swear or sexual term. My god man on the unclean servers this could lead to hours of fun!!! Ok dont market this as a perantal feature if you do it... it's entertainment. Like those stories where you pick a noun then a verb then a place then a name then another place blablabla & it tosses them into a story... oh the fun!!!
