Just wanted to let you know that UniversalScroller got opensourced and is now listed on OsDrawer, but it hasn't got a suitable manager yet.
Read about it here if you're capable and interested:

just noticed that app have a pref app :)

I almost got it to work perfect:

1- i used the button right and left at same time instead on middle.

2- to avoid conflict in seamonkey with middle button open in new tab, i used the universalscroller "swallow click" option

3- to prevent the "slow gear" of scroll wheel i desactivated "use factor for scroll wheel.

The app can work in firefox seamonkey but you need to get the increment at arounf 0.5, under it it start to "skip" BMessages it seem and act jerky (perhaps that could be fixed for next browser release?). I like how smooth 0.1 give and decided to not use the mouse scrolling at all in browser and only use it in all other apps (work really well to navigate the schematic i do in Gobe for exemple).

almost great :(

just learned about that app. As said it don't play well with firefox/seamonkey (my main turn off). Also when activated the behavior of the mouse scroll wheel is changed to the small gear far too much (the original behavior should be kept intact).

Too bad as i absolutely LOVE scrolling that way and it's especially good to browse those directory with lot of attributes on files as i don't have horizontal scroll on my mouse.

perhaps the solution to make that app better integrated and easier to use would be to replace middle button 1 and 2 pressed et the same time.

As for the firefox problem, the only way out i see is to disable the embeded pointer scroll in the browser code and let the "native" UniversalScroller do the work (especially the browser one feel like a slow php animation anyway).

Cool.

I tried this out. There are a few flaws:

Lack of sticky scrolling (click once, then move around, click again to exit out of scroll mode).

Conflicts with Firefox's built-in capability (this won't really be a problem if stick scroll is implemented)

Lack of an icon during scroll (a minor flaw, not too important)

Is this being updated? Are there alternatives, if not? Great work.

Backup of settings and contacting the author

Does anyone know where UniversalScroller stores its settings?

Is there any way to contact the author of this very nice app? It seems that his website is not available any more.

Thanks,

Prog.

Yes!

One of my gripes about BeOS is almost completely solved by this application. I don't use it for it's scrolling, which is a nice feature (although it borks the use of the middle-mouse button when scrolling on NetPositive and Firefox).

However, I DO use it for its copying and pasting mouse-clicks. I never got used to BeOS's lack of a right-click drop down menu when over a highlighted piece of text (as exists in Windows).

I have it setup so that when you right-click first then press the middle-mouse button at the same time, you copy the highlighted text, and when you middle-click first then right-click at the same time, you paste. Of course this only works for programs that use BeOS's system-wide copying and pasting (i.e. StyledEdit, NetPositive, etc.). That's enough for me.

Thank you for this program, tmgisi!!

Now if I can just get bittorrent to work . . .

Yeah, I've already tried that email address. It bounced. I'll try submitting feedback at his homepage. Cheers.

BeShare is great, but...

The advantage of downloads from BeBits, Tucows, etc. is that the developers can get a sense of the size of their user base and assess the return on investment of their time doing additional development. I think it is good to use BeShare to make software that is otherwise unobtainable available for users, so I am not criticizing this practice. I tend to limit what I share to only items that are not otherwise available on BeBits, etc.

For those interested, I am working on the design of a set of PalmOS databases (currently HanDBase) to provide a downloadable quick reference system for BeOS downloads. It will include just about everything you can think of. No promises on an ETA, but it will be freeware.

If anyone is interested in maintaining it or populating the databases, please feel free to contact me. My goal is to identify broken links, dead email addresses, etc., and help the BeOS community gain better visibility into what is available on this fine platform, and where they can go to get it. If we can hunt down the authors of these apps, we may be able to get working download links, and maybe renewed development interest. Perhaps some of them would be willing to open source their code and allow other developers to continue where they left off.

Cheers!

BeShare is the answer

With BeShare http://www.bebits.com/app/1330 you can find anything about BeOS. I'm there sharing the UniversalScroller. It works very very well if you have a 3-buttom mouse, but it's not so great if you already have a wheel mouse. Cheers from Brazil! :)

Good idea but cant download

Hey i've read all the beautiful things this driver does (i have for real a logitech pilot wheel optical!)
but the user no longer exists on Xoom. Would someone please fix? Or just tell the community where to find this file...? Thanx from Italy!

Added and Subtracted Functionality

I find the functionality of the scrolling capability added by this program to be first rate. However, it completely subtracts the clickable functionality of the middle mouse button. The scroll wheel still works, but the press-click is reserved only for UniversalScroller. Fix this, and it won't be beat!
