Not that I've used BeOS in years, but I was archiving my stuff, and checking out who was still around and noticed this tidbit for you all...

And I noticed the really silly way it retrieves messages.
Messages from one year old first, that really doesn't makes sense,
why is this brilliant programmer not listening to what the users want?
It is mentioned several times before.

hey mr programmer are you home?

The short answer is "no". IIRC, the author was open to the idea and indicated that the starting point is getting TropicLib built. I took a look at it about a year ago but never got anywhere. I forget the wall I hit -- could've been just lack of free time.

slow in getting news compared to Win

Getting the news takes forever, the same newsserver work much faster using windows. I am not saying it is a bug in Pineapple I just say it is much slower. By other newsservers this problem does not occur.
I personally find the downloading from the oldest news first, inconvenient, when I look for some "news" I wanna see it and don't want to download 100.000 postings before finding it.
I red the pineapple history and I understand that there have been made great progress in speed in some respects. I wonder if the programmer could/would work together with the maker of "newsreader" and fix the speed problem there. ( when using more then one newsserver ). The two of you would make the perfect combination for BeOS news.
I be happy to pay you both for an improved " newsreader".

PowerPC

Is there a PPC version of this, and if not, could there possibly be in the future?

Its the only one of the news readers I can actually handle using, all the others don't feel right or crash like crazy

Great newsreader

Been using this for over a year now. Great to know the author still works on it as time permits. The one thing I'd like Pineapple News to have is yEnc-encoding support.

Not getting all news?

I have noticed that it doesn't grab all articles the first time around. I keep having it retrieve and it gets more and more each time. I've tried another newsreader, Item, and it grabs a ton of messages all in one nice fell swoop. I'm a registered user, of course, but this is the first time I've really noticed it, as I'm not in newsgroupd much anymore.

Damn

This application has expired and there doesn't appear to be a new one on the author's WWW site.

How about a new version with a prolonged expiration date?

Still the best

After the demise of Be Inc, the apparent slow-down of BeOS-related activity, the almost zero slice of attention that BeOS offspring such as OpenBeOS gets in the media, the wandering off of well-known BeOS software geniuses, still, it is my main power operating system for everyday work, and still, Pineapple is the best designed news reader i've seen, considering all that's available anywhere else.

Will Pineapple ever be finished?

Hi! I'm a great fan of Pineapple, and sincerely hope you'll have the time to get to all those features you mentioned a while back ! (Like a font/appearence/color settings that can be set via the GUI?). I'm use to using 1600 x 1200 in BeOS, so unless I move it to another workspace with a lower resolution, it's almost impossilbe to read the fonts (the ones not configurable with the .ini or the BeOS system fonts).

Hope you will return to BeOS development soon!

Pineapple is a ver good start on a news reader. It take a bit getting use to some of the lingo used in the menus, after being stuck with using Outlook for so long. This program is in it infancy, and it will be very interesting to see where it goes from here (ie: filters, support for binary attachments, ect...)

Impressive

The best BeOS newsreader I've used.

Wow!!!!!!

The developper really knows what he is doing and supports his product well. This is the best newsreader for BeOS and it's surprising to me that I didn't have to pay $50.00 (US) for it. This program kicks ass!

The best newsreader that I have found for the BeOS!

Even though this version is not the final release, it is by far the best newsreader that I have found for the BeOS. Fast, rock solid stable, responsive, multithreaded, and very easy to install and use. It has very good documentation in the Help files. I have used Pineapple News extensively for the past couple of days and have yet to experience a single crash nor do I expect to as it is that solid. Has the look and feel of Outlook Express with the three panel GUI. It doesn't yet support all the features, ie, binaries, spell checker, preference setting menu for changing font style or size, color, and ect. that the author/developer has planned for it, but suffice it to say that even in it present form it is one great app and I urge those that are looking for a stable GUI newsreader to give it a try.
