Seems on a CD (Gobe Productive in this case) it doesn't actually go away after the first time. Also, even if you don't switch modes, just closing a window that's in Icon Mode crashes Tracker.

Using the beta that came with the SVG pack...

If you open a folder that's normally in Icon Mode and you switch to List Mode, all entries are duplicated. Then if you close the window, Tracker crashes. However, it only seems to happen once for a particular folder--after the crash, you can switch back and forth without problem.

I have to correct that this has nothing to do with BONE and Tracker.NewFS. Tracker.NewFS works fine on 5.0.3, BONE, Dano.
Usually when it hangs at this stage it tries to mount something. If the mount process blocks this can hang your system. Maybe you have a CD in a drive or a USB Stick plugged in that you could remove? Does it work with OpenTracker?

First, what BeOS version do you have? It will only work with 5.0.3 or higher.
If you install bone on 5.0, NewFS will behave like you explain.
Second: Try newest version from here: http://newfs.mlotz.ch/downloads/Tracker.NewFS3.0-TranslationKit1.1.zip
Hope this help.

Would be fine if you adapt the Tracker.New for ZETA (Path, Icons, menustructure and so on), so that there are not any incompatibilities any more! In this way the ZETA-Users would be able to "experience" the power of these excellent Tracker! ;o)

Some SVG images cause tracker to crash, when viewing a folder with SVGs. I'm using the tracker version with experimental localization, and experimental libbsvg package from february. I guess the problem is with libbsvg.

This is what the debugger said:

slow-down in Tracker itself isn't as annoying as slowdown in File Panel.
Will those per-folder options to disable/enable img translation affect also FilePanel?

Installation and Options

Current version when comment was posted: Beta 7c
Yes you should update to at least 5.0.3 first. BONE is not required for Tracker.NewFS.
Does it crash or does it hang? If it hangs at installation it's possible that it's a problem with the settings file. It's a bit difficult to debug such a problem remotly.

As to the issues with image performance. The thumbnailing system is all Translator based and some of them are just a bit slow. Newer Translators from Haiku built with a newer GCC could help a bit here.
But an option to disable image thumbnailing and one to disable PNG/SVG icons will sure be added sometime soon. It's just that I don't want it to be either completely disabled or completely enabled. It should be possible to decide per folder wether to use thumbnailing or even per view mode.
Actually it currently doesn't really matter wether you use List View or 512x512 icons because the images will be rendered to their full size by the Translator anyway and then just scaled down. This is rather inconvenient, but sadly the Translator system does not allow to specify what resolution you want a picture in.

There is real big need for this tracker to have option for switching all image-reading activity TOTALLY OFF.
Sometimes even in list view this is real pain to use Tracker in picture-populated folders, and especially irritating are actions in such folders with BFilePanel (Open or SaveAs).
2 GHz Intel-based laptop, and it all is as slow as WinXP on 100 Mhz 64 MB machine if you occasionaly try to work in your photoalbum folders.

I think it's the best Tracker for BeOS, lately i was using Zeta so i didn't use NewFS since beta 3, but now i've installed a BeOS Developer Edition 1.1 and i've installed the NewFS beta 7c and it ROCKS!! two weeks and it didn't crash yet, please keep the very very good work ^_^ BeOS needs this Tracker.
Oh! only a thing in Icon mode i can't sort the files (it's strange but i didn't have problems like other users, for example when i close a window in icon mode it doesn't crash and sorting in list mode works for me), the only thing is that in Icon mode i can't sort the files and the directories doesn't appear first. I hope the next beta (or the release 3)will fix any small error because it's the best Tracker (much better than Zeta ;P because i can see thumbnails of my Cd's and NTFS partitions and with Zeta i couldn't because it uses Thumbnailer).
Anyway GOOD WORK.

I added some "bug reports" to the Tracker.NewFS forum...

Some suggestions
 By Sir Mik - Posted on January 8, 2005 - 14:36:39   (#15334)
Current version when comment was posted: Beta 7c
Hi,

I'm using the latest NewFS for a week now, and noticing some strange things that the old versions didn't do. For example, if I go to a mounted volume(FAT32) it always shows the icons in 32x32 format "Icon View", whereas I want to have them displayed in "List View". If I remember correctly, the preferred view style was saved before, it isn't now. Could this be added again?

Also the themes zuMi and McClintock still don't show a disk icon(the grouped disk icon), is this normal? (disabling themes shows it correctly though).

And is it also possible to show a cd icon for cds, (dvd for dvds) and a floppy one for floppies? It doesn't do that now(whereas maybe it should?)...

Last thing I noticed is that files often get displayed with the wrong icon...for example when downloading movies in BeShare, the mime-type is set correctly but I just get a plain-file icon, no video one. Also when copying a zip-file from floppy to hd it first gets the Be application icon, after clicking it, it displays the zip-file icon correctly...I can imagine it would also be possible to set this icon correcly at download or copy time?

well hope my suggestions are useful,

regards,

Tim

Thumbnails for other MIME-Types
 By mmlr - Posted on January 6, 2005 - 08:38:03   (#15300)
Current version when comment was posted: Beta 7c
If you think about it, you will sure understand why this isn't possible currently.
Thumbnails are all done by image translators that translate an image of one format to an image of another format. There are no translators that convert PDF's or HTML pages into an image, so they are not supported.
All the code to support those types would need to be added to the Tracker itself, as there is no system wide facility for something like this. And I don't want to add this kind of stuff to the Tracker directly as it would be a huge investment of time and not even be reusable in other contexts.
Think about HTML or MSWord documents. To render them you would need whole projects of their own.
If you are willing, you can of course write Translators for HTML -> image and MSWord -> image or PDF -> image including an ioExtension with which one could configure the output size. But these would not really be useful for anything else than Tracker thumbnails. And that's just not very efficient in my eyes.

There is a forum for stuff like this by the way (http://forum.mlotz.ch/). BeBits talkback is not the best place for discussions like this.

Thanks. But what about MPEGs, PDFs, DOCs, HTMLs ?

Yes, with a little trick

To apply a thumbnail to a filder first add the attributes for your target sizes:

copyattr -n BEOS:<size>:STD_ICON <source_image> <target_folder>

Example:
copyttr -n BEOS:128:STD_ICON /boot/home/FancyCover.jpg /boot/home/FancyAlbum

But to tell tracker that it should look for thumbnails, the mimetype of the folder must be "image/"-something. You can open the folder with FileType (rightclick -> Add-Ons -> FileType) and change it's mime from "application/x-vnd.Be-directory" to "image/folder" for example. Then the Tracker should display the thumbnail.
But remember, as the folder is no "folder" anymore, it will not use the folder icon at all. When you have no thumbnail for the selected iconsize it will fallback to the "image/*" or "tracker/file" default icon.

Can I assign 128x128 thumbnails to folders ?

It will extremely be nice to see album cover in more than 32x32 thumbs. I've tried just copyattr from cover's picture attributes to folder, but it has no any effect

Hi,

I think there is a Bug in the Tracker/Deskbar.
Sometimes when I Rightclick on the MDR3 Mailbox to check my Mail, the Tracker crashes and a window is opening that tell's me that the Deskbar has minor Problems and it will be closed. After Restarting the Desktop/Tracker everything is going well till the next Rightclick ...

BTW. how to implement the SVG Icons into the Tracker?
Can't really figure out how this works... ;-)

Add-On-Problem found and fixed
 By mmlr - Posted on January 3, 2005 - 13:01:32   (#15259)
Current version when comment was posted: 3.0 Beta 7b
As suspected the reason for the strange behaviour of some applications / failing or missing add-ons was the (system wide) add-on space limit.
On the one hand there were two BTranslatorRosters that (each) loaded all default translators, what trashes add-on space. This is cut down now so that only the SVGTranslator, if installed and needed, is loaded.
On the other hand there was a bug that caused loading of Translators that were loaded already, each time you switched a theme.

Anything that needs other translators than the SVGTranslator is now routed through BTranslationUtils::GetBitmap(), which still loads all translators once, but only once per application. This does not fill up any more add-on space than previous Tracker versions, as the translators for BTranslationUtils::GetBitmap() are loaded for the background image, for example, anyway.
So afterall memory usage should be only about 100KB higher than versions without thumbnails and SVG, what should fix any remaining problems related to add-on space. A new bugfix release is planned for tonight.

@thuishimi:
I encountered this problem yesterday for the first time on another machine. I will investigate this further, but it won't be fixed yet in the next bugfix release.
In the mean time you can manually disable themes by editing the settings file located at "/boot/home/config/settings/Tracker/TrackerSettings". Open the file in StyledEdit and edit the "ThemesEnabled" line to "off" (whitout quotes) and the "CurrentTheme" to "" (empty quotes). You _must_ kill the Tracker after saving the changes (by ctrl-alt-del or ProcessControler for example) as the Tracker would overwrite the settingsfile if you quit it normally.

Can't undo theme now...

Was this already mentioned? I sort my mail buy status, then by "when". The previous behavior was that when I read a message and move onto the next, it is marked as read and the listing resorts appropriately.

With T.NFS it does not re-sort until I reclick on Status (twice, to resort it ascending) or some other sort label. Is it missing a message or something?

Add-On memory
 By mmlr - Posted on December 29, 2004 - 13:53:34   (#15216)
Current version when comment was posted: 3.0 Beta 7b
I think it is an add-on memory problem too. This would explain why Tracker and other add-ons aren't loaded after switching themes a lot.
Probably this is related to the havey use of Translators who, as their location /add-ons/Translators/* would suggest, are probably loaded as add-ons too.
Maybe it is a memory leak in the SVG or PNG-Translator or the translators are just not unloaded correctly by the tracker. I tried to minimize the places where translators are created and deleted and to reuse them as much as possible, but it seems not to be enough.

I will certainly look into it, but it's hard to debug as I can't reliably reproduce it over here. I'll keep you updated in the forum if I find a solution.

Seems like add-on memory have run out (only 32MB), which probably is because Mozilla is loading libraries in a bad way with that build.

There is a hack for Mozilla/Firefox for handling all the libraries for Mozilla, and if it doesn't work it more or less fills up the add-on memory because of all the libraries.

Great!

narrowed down the problem a bit. installed beta7b, rebooted, ran chkbfs for the heck of it, played w/MDR -- all fine and dandy. ran mozilla, this build
mozilla-i586-pc-beos-bone-20041208-1.7a-18.tar.gz

mozilla would quit immediately after displaying the splash screen. after that *most* add-ons would fail to work Tracker addons such as Terminal Here, parts of MDR and what-not.

this build of mozilla works fine (aside from a scroll issue) in beta6.

Anyone else using this version of mozilla and having problems with beta7(b) ?
