For everyone that had crashing deskbars and other application, you should try the bugfix release. It doesn't yet fix any other things (besides the Disks icon thing).
This version is more OpenTracker compatible, in the sense that it should have no Tracker.NewFS only symbols an application may link to (which would lead to incompatibilieties like the ones now sadly seen on Zeta). Also it has a more "original" version of the ModelMenuItem which should fix a few things. I changed the size of the ModelMenuItem class by an experiment and forgot to remove it for release. When deleting an instance of that class with a program linked to OpenTracker for example (what MDR does), this leads to crashes.
The very first downloader is adviced to download again, because he probably got a broken package (sorry).

...with the latest TNFS, Deskbar crashes when clicking ( with left or right button) on MDR replicant, sometimes it works, but some queries in the menu are unnamed.
Theming is cool, but the supertype icon doesn't work, undefined types ( like audio/x-mpeg, text/css and so on ) are displayed with the unknown ( octet-stream ) icon.
Tracker itself rocks, but it's slower than the last version, specially on boot, and often I must kill it 'cuz the system has a strange behaviour ( if i try to open an image with showimage, it tells me that aren't translators installed for that format, or vlc doesn't open), sometimes the menu items aren't highlighted passing over them...
Disks Icon...sometimes it doesn't appear, so I must to open Tracker Settings and toggle to "Show Volumes on Desktop" and to "Show Disks" again...
Mounted CDs are displayed with Volume Icon and non with their icon..
Some request before leavin':
Pratical request:
is possible to toggle off the thumbnails ?( i've hundreds of big pics on my non-bfs partition, it's quite annoying wait for completion )
Estetical request:
what do you thionk about a list view like in CrystalTracker (http://crystaltracker.beosmax.org/index3.html)?

After installing the latest Tracker.NewFS, Gobe Productive will not start. The furthest it will go is to the loading preferences dialog on the splash screen. This happens whether you open Gobe by itself or right-click on a file and try to "open with..." Gobe Productive.

Feels a lot stable now.
Less crashes than with the previous beta, esp. in scaled and icon view.
Sometimes Deskbar crashes on shutdown.
Trash doesn't show empty bin after emptying the trash, I have to use the context menu a second time to see the right empty bin.
Thanx

Kept crashing whenever I viewed a folder with SVG icons in it (upon closing the folder, that is). Didn't do a stack crawl, sorry. Also, no themes showed up in the theme preferences. How do you add them/switch them?
Otherwise, I swear it renders the SVG even better than it did before! :) Looks nice. Just wish I could run it. Can't wait for 3.0 final!

Same problem with Zeta rc3.
Also, it would be nice to have the desktop icons scale down to 36 x 36 (just like standard r5)

If you forced the SVG icon with the "hack" to create a new icon with FileTypes described in the forum, this SVG-Icon is now always shown instead of the ones in the theme. This is actually the correct behavior, as icons defined for nodes directly override the ones included in the theme.
To get rid of this, you have to clear all the icons you set for that folder. You can do that with the rmattr tool. Be sure that you not only delete the SVG icon, but also the M and L STD_ICONs you created with FileTypes.
Go into a terminal and type:
rmattr BEOS:V:STD_ICON <target folder>
rmattr BEOS:L:STD_ICON <target folder>
rmattr BEOS:M:STD_ICON <target folder>
This should clear all the icons. You may need to restart the tracker to get the icons updated.

Using the older version (before this Themes version was released) I read a hack on the forum about how to get an SVG icon on folders like "home" and "/boot" and "preferences". I did what it said and it worked.
Now that I've upgraded to this new Theming version (great work by the way!), these icons are not being updated when I choose the theme to apply.
Thanks for any help with this problem.

When you switch themes (heavily) there is a rare possibility that the system becomes "strange".
Strange to that extent that it will cause random problems like screensavers not working, programs not finding add-ons (mozilla or even the tracker itself), things taking longer than they should, and so on.
I have experienced this a few times while working on Beta 7, but thought it was gone in the final Beta 7 release.
I don't know yet why exactly this happens, but I will investigate it further.
In any case, this should not cause any dataloss and restarting the system (not only the tracker) will fix the problems.
If it doesn't or if it happens even when you don't touch themes at all, please report it in the Tracker.NewFS forum at http://forum.mlotz.ch/.

beta7 looks great! it just crashes on my system (r5+bone7a).
most of the time when i right click MDR (3.0.0 Final) in the Deskbar, Deskbar will either crash instantly or MDR's right click context menu will be have *blank* text for random items -- "Open Draft" , "Open Inbox Folder", "Open Mail Folder", "#X New Messages".
sometimes opening up the "#X New Messages >" will crash deskbar:

This problem can be caused by misbehaving Deskbar replicants - disable all replicants, and reboot to see if the Deskbar stays where it should, then enable them one by one to locate the culprit.
If you should happen to use DeskbarSensor: the deskbar-at-bottom behavior is a known bug in old versions, download the newest binary at http://www.elenthara.de/BeOS/DeskbarSensor/DeskbarSensor_Exp_20040803.zip.

Although, I got it because my Oggs copying from my old IDE drive to my old SCSI drive were only going at about 2.3 MB/s max, and NewFS is about the same or a smidgeon slower. I can't expect new hardware speeds on old hardware though. :)

Thanks for the update, nice work!
Just a quick note on the thumbnails - most digital camera images are in EXIF JPEG format, which actually includes a thumbnail in the header of the file. I think this is the reason why initial loading of thumbnails on windows is much quicker (the load, scale operation is obviously much less costly).
It would be great if you could add support for loading these thumbnails into Tracker.NewFS. Something like OpenExif might be helpful: http://sourceforge.net/projects/openexif/

| Status Report , Unified Info Windows and SVG |
 |
 |
By mmlr - Posted on April 13, 2004 - 11:47:10 (#11982)
Current version when comment was posted: Beta 6 |
 |
 |
The current status is that I am working on two main features:
1. Unified file info windows. Similar to the way it is done in windows (just with a bit more of information). This doesn't mean that the traditional way will be lost. the unified info window will have a button instead of the icon. If you click that button a info window for all the single files opens up (like it was before). The clue about it is that if you hit that button again, the individual windows close and you only have to close the one remaining unified window instead of every window separate.
2. SVG support. Scalable Vector Graphics (like the ones used in the Zeta Tracker) will be supported through a separate library (libbsvg.so) which will soon be available here as open source.
That SVG library has quite a different concept than the one used in the Zeta Tracker. If you take a look at the View and the Shape system headers, you will notice that the people at Be always had Vector Graphics in mind. All the functions for basic and complex shapes that are needed to support the SVG format as well as the scaling ability (just by setting it with SetScale()) is allready there. The libbsvg.so will close the gap between the text based SVG format (as published by the w3) and the BView class. By providing a BSVGView class that is able to act just like a normal BView (you can add it directly to your window, another view or a bitmap and render into that) but additionaly load, parse and display SVG files. The lack of gradients is managed by the (also new) BGradient class that can render a gradient into a view or bitmap (this way you can create a standard view with some nice gradient as the background).
This library will show some of the hidden power of the Be API and especially of the app_server. So far it is generally faster than the SVG implementation in Zeta (using the libart library) and does scale better, but is a bit less accurate in some cases and is not (yet) a full implementation of the SVG 1.1 standard (what I am working on right now).
That (beside the usual bugfixing) is what is delaying the next beta of Tracker.NewFS.
@ Diver's bugreport:
1.a: this is a bug, but I wasn't able to trace that one back yet, I don't think it is that severe.
1.b: Yes, there is no icon-caching in beta 6 because of lack of a proper solution (size vs. speed). In my current version this is done with attributes, but there needs to be some tracking as to what icon resolution to save permanently.
c: This is by design. I don't want it to automatically rearang icons because it is very well possible that you just accidently switch to a resolution or not need it permanently and rearanging all icons brakes the ordering one may did (I have some folders where the icons lay at some fixed positions and I hate it when the file positions get messed up).
If you need to line up the icons just hit command-k and they will be rearanged.
d: True...
e: See text about SVG above.
f: Yes, I could. We'll see...
g: Fixed.
2: This is an old bug (in all tracker version I think). I'll see if it was fixed in OpenTracker.
3: This is a bit strange. I'll take another look at it.
4. The OT has completely different inner workings. That is what makes the difference in speed but this subsystem has some issues with the virtual /dev structure. So the /dev will probably stay that way for some time.
5: Strange. This may be due to the OT compatibility hack with the first window. I have to test that my self.
6. Fixed.

Hi Michael!
Thanks for this new release, it rocks now!
But still some issues remains:
*1. Thumbs (scale modes):
a. When i scale images (alt+4,5,6...) and then go back to normal view (alt+1/2/3) image icons are dissappears and became like "generic" one.
b. Thumbs creation takes a very long time (about a minute for 200 images), and it seems to create thumbnails avery time you open a folder with scale attribute. Is there any possiblity to add caching for thumbs like XP Explorer does by creating thumbs.db in every folder? But in beos we could write cache file as attribute, right?
c. When changing scale mode from 64x64 to 96x96 and higher thumbs going to overlap themselves.
d. By introducing scaling feature the icon label wrapping function became more desireable than ever, so thumbs will order correctly next to each other.
e. What abot other non-image files in scaled modes? It will be cool if they would smoth (a-la SVG tracker) or even replaced by another icon sets...
f. Could you make tumbnail's borders more smoothed? Like we see in yT's svg tracker.
g. If alt+4..9 holded tracker view refrash constantly, this doesn't happen with alt+1..3.
*2. When dropping a file on desktop from other folders an icon created not in the same place where it's dropped, though it happens only first time you move a file. If you move file back and the drop it at Desktop again everything is just fine.
*3. I erased my settings file and install beta 6, but it still don't warn if moving a system file/folder, seems like a bug to me.
*4. The /dev thing. I've tested cvs version of OT and i had no crashes at all, so maybe it's time to bring icons of context menus in /dev back?
*5. Beta 6 broke FGE (http://bebits.com/app/2784) for tracker windows, though beta 5 works fine.
*6. I think that that FSUtils.cpp is not very much synced. NewFS beta 6 doesn't offer to user to fix text files mistakenly marked as executable. Here is the code:
if (error == B_LAUNCH_FAILED_EXECUTABLE && !refsToPass) {
alertString << "Could not open \"" << app.name
<< "\". The file is mistakenly marked as executable. ";
if (!openWithOK) {
// offer the possibility to change the permissions
alertString << "\nShould this be fixed?";
if ((new BAlert("", alertString.String(), "Cancel", "Proceed", 0,
B_WIDTH_AS_USUAL, B_WARNING_ALERT))->Go() == 1) {
BEntry entry(&documentRef);
mode_t permissions;
Cheers

Hehe, I've tried to explain this before but obviously didn't suceed.
You have posted your question in an area of the site meant for comments/feedback/suggestions on the BeOS app "Tracker.NewFS". It is *not* a general discussion forum!
For general BeOS dicussion forums, look at http://forum.beosjournal.org and http://forums.begroovy.com
Please don't post any more general comments on BeBits - use the forums I mention above, and you will get more answers.

I was thinking that a person could make the jack the Utart speed up to 112k / 39400 if the chip had -F on it and the software would allow it. I know a person that needs BeOs to run on {Win Me}, and I would like to know if BeOs will run on XP, and if a winModem can be used.? You guys seem to eat drink and sleep this stuff. :-). Thankx for the Links.

Let me explain what this site (BeBits) is all about:
It is a site to offer a central place for all BeOS software. The talkback section, where you write these messages, are all linked to pages about a particular application (in this case, Tracker.NewFS). There is a link to the application entry at the top of the talkback page ("Go back to the Tracker.NewFS page"). That page will contain all the download links you need.
The application listings are the main purpose of this site, not the talkback section - it just provides an area for people to comment on the applications posted here.
Finally, all of the applications on this site are for BeOS, and so will not work on Windows.
