Thumbnails, CD's, Dialogs...
 By mmlr - Posted on January 31, 2004 - 13:31:18   (#10863)

To edmundf:
The "no thumbnails on CD's" is because the MIME-Type lookup fails on iso9660 volumes. The thumbnails get created for "image/*". So if the MIME-Type isn't known it isn't possible to know wether it is an image and create a thumbnail for it.
I'm sorry for that but I won't change it to the "windows-way" and relay on file endings. This is too static and would further slow down the process of displaying folders.
The "disc is busy" thing happens mostly because some sort of query is still active on a volume (the "Open With" menu and the like triger a query, too). I wouldn't know how to fix that, sorry.

To Uberbyte:
I think the way the Tracker-Dialogs look now is ok. Your mockup may look more powerful, but I don't think it is more userfriendly. Also a complete rewrite of the internal workings of the dialog would be necessary to accomplish such a look, and I don't think that it is worth that effort.

To procosm:
This nice to hear ;). Thanks for the report.

Very good but...

I like the thumbnail thing very much, but it doesn't show thumbnails from an CD. I have problems unmountig a CD too.
" CD is busy " even when I take the CD out by the eject button.( at least the eject button is stil working.)

Keep up the good work

Does not cause Mozilla to crash anymore

I tried the latest version of Tracker.NewFS to see if it would cause the same crask in the same version of Mozilla as my previous comment, "When I try and save a webpage doing File/Save Page As, from the window that appears navigate to where I want to save it then in this directory window do File/New/New Folder. I then rename the folder and then double click to try and open it but then Mozilla crashes" but the crash bug seems to be fixed with 3.0-beta6.
The latest version seems alround more stable. Thanks for this app.

Thanks for the great work! The speed increases and dynamic filtering are very nice. The Tracker Quesion dialogs seem a little "messy" and maybe could be cleaned up a bit. I made a quick mock-up to show one way this could be done:
http://members.aol.com/netfishie/trackerquestion.png

This is just one possible solution, based primarily on the Find and Get Info dialogs.

Thanks again for all the hard work!

The window issue

Hi

Those two things are known and one of them is allready fixed.
The keyboard navigation is still a leftover of Attila's work. I will try to fix that.
I have no clue where the Twicher has gone, but I have added a little "fake window" to the latest version (3.0b6) that is created as 0 so the Desktop is on 1 again. I compared it to the latest OpenTracker and it workes the same way now (I checked for the window frames useing hey).

Hope this helps.

I installed Max Ed some time ago because I needed a net_server install, and it ships with NewFS... While there are interesting ideas I definitely don't like the file dialogs which are totally awful to nagivate from keyboard.
Btw, I had an issue when writing BSnow, it seems the Desktop window is id 0 in NewFS, whereas it's 1 in OT, and I use 1 in BSnow as this wasn't supposed to changed anytime soon. (using the name "Desktop" isn't an option either since some people use "show full path", and so teh desktop window is also renamed... ugly). Where is the Twitcher window gone ???? This breaks BSnow, and probably other apps as well.

Wow!

Diver:

1. Allready fixed...
2. There is a hidden setting for it, but it should still warn by default.
3. Some / most of the contextmenus are dangerous under /dev and cause crashes. That's why I disabled them.

A new version will be released soon with some general fixes. But there will be no 3.0 final before I track down the source of one remaining crashing bug.

Hi mmlr!

I found some new bugs for you :)

*1. Open a folder with 5-10 items, Zip-O-Matic 1st one, press end and then up arrow and you see a drowing bug.

*2. Beta5 doesn't warn if you move/delete from system folders!!!

*3. Context menus in /dev isn't the same as with OpenTracker

BTW, when are you planning to release new version? Or at least sources?
Thanks for your work!

It seems only method to totally prevent crashes with bootleg trackers is to get rid of native file panel in Mozilla and use XUL-panel.

OpenTracker.NewFS causing Bezilla to crash
 By procosm - Posted on January 20, 2004 - 09:42:28   (#10674)
Current version when comment was posted: 3.0 Beta 5
I have found with the latest Opentracker.NewFS that it is causing "Mozilla/5.0 (BeOS; U; BeOS BePC; en-US; rv:1.7a) Gecko/20040104" to crash. When I try and save a webpage doing File/Save Page As, from the window that appears navigate to where I want to save it then in this directory window do File/New/New Folder. I then rename the folder and then double click to try and open it but then Mozilla crashes. I at first thought this was entirely due to Mozilla but I have noticed some other faults when trying to make new folders while not using Mozilla, like when I rename a new folder it makes a double and a popup note say's that "this directory already contains a folder with this name do you want to replace it" .
I went back to OpenTracker-5.2.1 and all these problems don't appear. I have the debug data from the crash of Mozilla if that would be any use.

The sources from bu's CVS are quite old, and you can't even compile dockbert against original OpenTracker. I have a synced version here (and an older version is floating on BeShare).
Sadly, OT.NewFS beta 5 still fails to provide the symbol that Dockbert expect on libtracker.so (see a few comments below).

Does anyone knows the email addy of the "Team Leader" of bu's Dockbert project?

If I'm buying Zeta, there's no way in the world I'm going back to the old Tracker, no matter how much eye candy they've coated it with.

Not being able to view the Desktop in a Tracker window is, by itself, a deal breaker for me.

Hi! first of all i've to say that Tracker.NewFS is the best version (at least for me) of OpenTracker and the last beta rocks!, hehehe, but i've some problems, i still having problems with disk-icon i only see the icons in list view (icon and mini icon view don't show anything), the thumbnails is a GREAT idea and very usefull but the images in the scaled mode of 128x128 and higher are overlapped, oh! and the last when i make a directory the icon of directory is like a generic file and not the icon directory...
Maybe some errors are only produced in my system... but i've those problems and i report :).
Keep the good work.

As I told over and over: You can send me bug reports via e-Mail, but it is only useful if you write a _description_ of what you were doing at the time of the crash with as many _details_ as possible.

Especially if you post or send me a debugger output, the very first line of the output is important (where the function name is given). With the rest I can't do anything!

Hmm. Well.

That it crashs that can happen from time to time, yes. But that it simply quits without sending you to the debugger is strange.

As there is no real debug data saved by Tracker, the only thing that is interesting for me is in what function the error happened. If you click on "Details" -> "Debugger" when the Tracker crashes the debugger should print out that information.

You can send me that output via e-Mail, but remember, that it is only useful if you write down a description of what you were doing at the time of the crash with as many details as possible.

Much fun with Beta 5...

Does the Tracker write debugging info anywhere? It quits at least once/day and seems to occur during some sort of file operation like emptying the trash, or deleting a recently downloaded file, or symlink, etc.

I'd like to help out but don't know where to find the data you might need to find the bug.

If you still have that 100% CPU-Usage bug you don't have the latest version which fixes the bug that has exactly that symptoms.
OpenTracker CVS. Yes, I didn't sync the add-ons extension by now, because I read of some problems with it.

By the way, there will be a new release soon, that includes another, now working, experimental feature.

So just be a little more patient :).

Hi mmlr,
thanks for the updated version, but it have very annoying bug. After about an hour or near it tracker jumps to 100% of CPU usage, i looked into ProcessController and it shows that one thread takes all cpu time, it can be "move task" or "link creation" thread and i have to relaunch tracker which is kinda pain. No lockups, just abnormal cpu usage and this happens very often for me, beta3 works fine, i'm using beta4 (silent update).

And a feature request - would it be possible to show which action user could undo/redo?

Ah, and beta4 _isn't_ synced with cvs version at least not after 5.21 release which contain some additions to Add-ons menu...

Thanks again for all your work, dude!

There has been a silent update to fix that issue. So you only need to redownload and install again. If something goes wrong you can revert to the old Tracker at the end of the installation.

> Bug 1.

Yes, my fault. I changed the menu adding sheme to reduce redundance but seem to parse from the top instead of the bottom to find the named menu "Add-Ons". I'll fix that.

> Bug 2.
That's exactly why it's B"Private" ;). But that's not a big deal either, I'll put a dummy function that redirects.

> Feature Request:
Actually that is caused by "not having enough space in the settings panel to put that "filter in navmenus, too"-checkbox" ;). But I think I'll find a place for it.

> discs icon when opened does not show any volumes
Fixed that one, too. But I don't think that you should have that in 2.9. I think this was introduced with DynamicFiltering and a change in OT discs-icon what came in 3.0b1. Anyway, it works now and I also cleaned up some wrong and some unnecessary or maybe even dangerous menuitems.

> opening http:// links
As you quoted correctly: "I don't like this one". If it were about something in the filesystem, like opening zipfiles or such, this would be something else, but this has simply nothing to do with the filesystem and will not be supported by the tracker. There would be a implementation problem that wouldn't make it very useful anyway. So far it is not possible to tell mozilla or firebird to open a site. You can only do that at launch time, so if you allready have a browser open it would not work. And using netpositive is not really an option, as you would have to open anoter browser in most cases anyway.

Thanks for the Feedback. You really help to improve this thing!

2 Bugs, 1 feature request and many thanks! :-)

Hello Michael.

Two bug reports and a feature request:

Bug 1.
If you have a folder named "Add-Ons" (it doesn't matter where is it) and you right-click on it to see its contents you'll have a surprise: it shows the contents of the "Add-Ons" submenu instead of the folder's content. For a newly created and empty "Add-Ons" folder, it looks like this:

Archiver
FileTypes
...
TrackerGrep
parent folder (in italics)
Empty folder (disabled)

And the "Add-Ons" submenu says: "<empty>"

This bug was present since 3.0 beta 1

Bug 2.
Well, maybe not a "bug", but...
I can't use Dockbert with this release because I get the unresolved symbol:
__Q28BPrivate13ModelMenuItemPCQ28BPrivate5ModelP5BMenubT3

As I don't have NewFS sources, I used nm, c++filt and OT's sources to see what have changed:

It looks like you have changed the constructor for "ModelMenuItem" (in IconMenuItem[.h and .cpp]) by adding a boolean.

From OT:
BPrivate::ModelMenuItem::ModelMenuItem(BPrivate::Model const *, BMenu *, bool, bool)
From NewFS:
BPrivate::ModelMenuItem::ModelMenuItem(BPrivate::Model const *, BMenu *, bool, bool, bool)

I hope there's a way of "fixing" this so I can use Dockbert again :-) (maybe I just need to recompile Dockbert against NewFS, but I don't have its sources).

Feature Request:
The Static Filtering its awesome, but it works only on windows and not in Tracker's navmenues.
Could you change this so filtering is done on both places, or add it as an option at least?

Ok, that's all. Thanks for your work Michael!

Another bugfix...
 By mmlr - Posted on December 31, 2003 - 02:47:33   (#10243)
Current version when comment was posted: 3.0 Beta 4
I do confirm the "New Folder"-Bug. It is not related to creating a new folder but to do any undoable operation. It happens due to a missing "--" that I seem to have forgotton about.
The bug is fixed now and you'll only see it if you downloaded beta 4 before this post, newer downloads include a fixed libtracker.
There are three ways arround this bug:

1. Redownload the package and install it (fixes the bug)
2. Upping the "History Depth" in "Settings" -> "Undo" to about 1000 (circumvents the bug by not reaching the critical point)
3. Disabling Undo completely ("Settings" -> "Undo")

I can also confirm the bug with the "Disks"-Icon but have to say that it was introduced by a change in OpenTracker rather than Tracker.NewFS. It has a high priority on my to-be-fixed list.

There was a bug in the installer, that caused not copying the executabels at all if your /boot is not called /BeOS. That funny PackageBuilder replaced the custom path with a hardcoded one for my system.
So if the Tracker did not start after installation it probably was a installation bug and is fixed now. Just redownload and try again.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Wouldn't it be trivial to add the capabitilty to lauch a browser when someone types in a http:// link or for that matter open the prefered application for all:// style links? I'm not talking about using the tracker window for a browser, but having tracker open the webbrowser with the link that the person typed in.

Certainly people shouldn't be using tracker windows for webbrowsing (atleast until there is a version of IE for beos :) ), but adding the ability to open a webbrowser like that wouldn't hurt anyone and would ease the transition from windows were people type web addresses in any window with a location bar and are able to browse the web.
