Bug

Browsing the root folders inside of the /dev folder (via menus) by using the "Parent folder" item seems to freeze the Tracker.

Looks like it occures due the nature that Tracker.NewFS doesn't know the parent folder of the /dev folder, when using the menus.

Maybe not too serious, but could be fixed perhaps? Thanks for a great app!

but if you don't like it, you can just turn it off. Or change the directory to something more useful for you.
I will implement all the other features optional so everyone can customize it for his needs. I think in general BeOS is an OS which adapts to the user and not one where the user has to adapt to a system, so making the tracker as customizable as possible is a top priority for me.

I think that this is a good example of OT could to be...but i don't like the home button, i think it's not much pratical..why u don't implement instead the "favorites" feature presents in file panel...this is my simple opinion...

the Modified column....

Can I remove 'modified' column for good? I don't want it to get shown for every single folder. It is extremely rare that I need it. Sure, I know that if I disable it for a particular folder it won't be shown again in this folder, but I want it to disable for ALL folders.

Is there a way that I have not seen to do this? If there is no such way, can you please include it, so that I can choose the default size, default colums etc of folders? (Would it be also possible for fat and reiserfs volumes?)

THANK YOU! :)

Thanks VERY much.. I likes it!

Eagerly awaiting dano release.

As the title sais. Could be that I just overread a few Dano handling #if's in the OT-source. I'll have a look at that soon (I hope soon, but I'm a bit busy right now).

I guess I spoke to earlier... the patched version starts and works... but is too unstable to everyday use...

Maybe I'm suffering of the "Too up-to-date OT" syndrome?

I hope you can merge it with a newer version soon...

Keep up the good work!

You can edit from tracker... at least I can I do it often with
my downloads. If I have a file from a website I can't remember
I find the file click on the URL attribute in Tracker wait a
sec, highlight it (as it is editable by then) & then copy it
then pasting into my webbrowser.

o, and let's allow colons in filenames edited in tracker, please (rather than cheating from terminal or apps like army knife)!

=)

My two cents.

Light fast and powerful is in my opinion the way of beos and something that certainly in my opinion should be essential in a file manager.

That being said, the SVG Tracker source is around the place (and was released under the OT license at the time as far as I can recall). I'm sure another Tracker fork would always be welcome, choice is a great thing.

With regards to the a Dano version, that would be fantastic, maybe someone on a Dano system could volunteer to help by building it from the source, hacking the binary seems pretty crude in my opinion.

Maybe NewFS should fork officially from OT?
As I said, choice is great, maybe there's some good idea's for Deskbar enhancements also.

Looking forward to seeing what comes next.
Keep it comming. :)

This isnt a matter of cool. I do webdesign & graphic design &
when your working with a folder of pictures & images for websites your File manager needs to let you manage them. 32X32
thumnails arent going to cut it to preview an image. I'm not busting mmlr at all cuz he's done some seriously great work here & I think he has surpassed the normal OT by far & he's so
focused on speed stabilty error checking ... well the important stuff think he is developing with the true BeOS way in mind. Fast powerfull & stable - no questions asked. It's user friendly & deals with problems well. but it also doesnt have large 32bit thumbs to deal with sorting & dealing with image files & this is a must to any graphic designer painter or photographer. So all the features you mention along with mine are relivant & would be very welcomed by many. I think one of the more basic functions missing from OT is sort by _date _created _kind _name _permissions etc... this is needed as the clean up function ignores the problem I mention a few posts back where a folder or files atriibutes set it to a location in a viewable window... this could mean all your files are grouped together in a folder & you have to scroll WAY up to find one sinlge file because it atribes say it needs to be at place X. As well two files or folders having the same co-ordinates sit on top of eachother & clean up does not fix this leaving files & folders burried under each other & leaves the user scratching their head if they are new to this quirk as to here the hell is folder "X". Of corse this is a problem with the icon views only but alot of people use it over detail view... mostly n00bs :) but its still relivant as while the savvy use detail view they wont for pictures & such...

Large icons and thumbnails are indeed cool, but...

Let's not forget that Tracker is first and foremost a file manager.

Michael, If you ever get bored and seek for new stuff to implement, here's my own OT.NFS wishlist.

* Tree pane ala Seeker and Explorer
* Settings for default view (I always use List view) and column selection. This setting should be easy to apply to all folders, including the default template. (I did encounter special tools and scripts that were supposed to do this, but they weren't easy to use)
* Show Target command (like Command+R in Finder)
* Tile Windows vertically (an Explorer trick for quickly mimicking the classic Norton Commander layout, but with as many panes as you want)
* Link icons with a full underline instead of the dotted hard-to-see one
* Address bar auto-complete
* Drag and drop with different icon variants when modifier keys are pressed. For Copy ("+"), Move (standard icon) and Create Link ("___")
* Shift selection (start point->hold shift->click end-point)
* Customizable toolbar
* Embedded Search field in each Tracker toolbar

I could go on and on, the bottom line is that OT.NFS is a already a significant addition to the usability of BeOS (which was already very good) and already includes features that other file managers are lacking.

And for those of you who like large BeOS-like icons, check these out: http://mc.clintock.com/first_floor/study_1/desk/computer_projects/icons

128x128 32bit Icons
 By zoontf - Posted on March 24, 2003 - 17:03:35   (#6565)
Current version when comment was posted: 2.5
I just thought that I would add my opinion here. A previous post requested that 128x128 32bpp icons be added to Tracer.NFS... Ever since I started using Be my one gripe - my single gripe - has been the lack of large, high quality icons. I agree that functionality is and technical superiority are key necessities for BeOS, but i also think that the Media OS should look as good as it can without dramatically sacrificing the technical superiority. I personally use the FAT Tracker... aka the SVG Tracker. One reason I find it useful to have huge 32bpp icons is that I do a lot of management of my digital photos through the tracker. I could use an external program to manage these files that draws thumbnails and has some file management capability, but actually, Tracker is faster and more capable. Until FAT Tracker, the only thing I needed from Tracker.NFS (which is what I used until FAT Tracker) was the ability to browse image thumbnails integrated into the tracker. Sure, there are the nice utilities such as "thumbnail" for Tracker/Tracker.NFS/... that generate a 32x32 icon in 256 colors... but that doesn't quite make a 2048x1536 photo easily recognizable from Tracker.

Sooo.. I would really truly be beside myself with joy if the most technically superior tracker also integrated this "eye-candy" stuff. However, I also realize that writing the code could be an issue. If I am not mistaken FAT Tracker was hacked up by some smart guy who refused to share the source code - thus we have binaries only... I could be wrong... but if that is the case, the Tracker.NFS maintainer would have to come up with similiar code himself. That would be a pain. Thus, I won't expect it anytime soon.

On a different note, even if eye-candy is not available, FAT Tracker has one other feature I consider really useful. You can click in any folder, and sort the icons, in icon view (not list view) by name, size, date, etc... making them form ordered little rows that fit the width of the current folder window (or desktop). Just a thought.

To the Tracker.NFS maintainer - GOOD WORK, even if I personally don't use it, Tracker.NFS is a great piece of software. Thanks for resurrecting it!

o, these updates are great

If this did 32bit 128X128 icons I'd use it. This has some seriously nice stuff. The home button is cool as well as the trasnperant selection. You put in some nice work man. I wish I could keep that transperant selection & home button stuff but alas OT & this still lack features I need :( Keep up the good work though. This is quite awsome.

Adding a button to the navigation buttons on the tracker window to quickly change the current directory to /boot/home would be great (a little button of a house or something), this is a feature I'm use to from various file managers in *nix and is handy if you use your home dir a lot.

What about allowing the Desktop folder in a Tracker window?

I can live with either OT or OT/NFS (though I prefer the latter), but being forced away from the desktop folder is such a pain!
With OS X, even Apple ditched this annoying limitation, so why should OT keep it? no other modern OS has it anymore...

OpenTracker vs. NewFS
 By axeld - Posted on March 21, 2003 - 19:54:06   (#6504)
Current version when comment was posted: 5.1.x/NewFS 2.0
I've already stated several times, that I will look into NewFS after the next next OpenTracker release. The (release) road map in short is like this:
1) release the current version after all serious bugs have been fixed
2) make Tracker multi-language (by providing and using a Locale Kit)
3) See how and if NewFS can be included
4) Move to the add-on based Tracker

Hope this clears it up a bit. I will proceed with this road map, but it'll take time as there aren't that many contributors right now, and I am deeply involved in other projects like OpenBeOS.

rules vs results - OT CVS
 By Jess - Posted on March 21, 2003 - 18:10:45   (#6503)
Current version when comment was posted: 5.1.x/NewFS 2.0
I havent tried this tracker but maybe the OT team should think about say skrew their style rules & merge this. Unless it creates massive borks for future road maps it looks like this tracker gives results - OT has been lacking for a long time with little IMO good added in quite some time. OT has needed certain features for a long time & right now it's needs them dearly as all the Be projects are trying to hold on & make it through a rough time. It might be time to rethink their rules & focus on results & future road maps. Like adding sort by features - thumbnail view (& not some crappy 32x32) & also correct the problem when an file or folders attributes tell it to be placed in a certain section of a window & that happens to be under or over nother file or folder... OT needs to reccognise that spot is taken & move to the nearest unpopulated space. I submitted these things a long time ago & have seen nothing of it yet... I appreciate the work done but maybe a better way to collaberate on these projects is needed unless the curent OT design is structured for a certain end goal that cant be changed or added to. Anyway mmlr seems to want results & IMO he seems to be doing more to address needed features & error checking atm.

It's not included in the OT cvs tree because, amongst various other issues, it violates a bunch of the code style/design guidelines. Fixing this would pretty much require a total rewrite, which isn't likely to happen.
