There's a GPL AAC project called FAAC. I was able to port the encoder to BeOS many many moons ago (without much difficulty). I suppose someone could pickup this project and work on an AAC plugin....

Hello, I don't know if someone else ask you this option if yes sorry to ask it again.
Most of the time when I open multiple audio file from the tracker when Soundplay is already running I want to add that files to the playlist but the only options are replace currently played file and play it simultaneously.
Can you add that features in future release please.
Thanks for your work.

Has anyone experienced titles that won't stream when using LAME with the Live Encoder? Most of my titles stream fine, however, some don't. I have compared the ones that do with the ones that don't in MP3Tag and they all look fine. Still..when streaming, about 1 in 8 don't display a title. Any ideas?
I realize it's prolly my files, but I am wondering if I can correct anything in the files, or if I need to replace them.

Thanks for the info Marco...and your memory serves you correctly. If that feature is included someday, that will be awesome. I have found one odd thing that maybe you can explain, or at least offer some suggestions on. When I am connected - Soundplay to Soundplay/local LAN - where A is streaming and B is listening...if I restart the live encoder, after a few seconds, machine B will reconnect. However...going the other way...B streaming A connected...after a restart, A will not reconnect to B. I don't think I have anything set differently in Soundplay, yet it acts differently. Additionally, using this "auto-reconnect" approach is the only way I could get titles to start streaming using MP3. I know that sounds odd, but that's how it works for me. One other odd thing...when I was experimenting with this, one time...and one time only, I switched to OGG before restarting the live encoder, and when the machine reconnected to the OGG stream, and ir showed recieving an OGG stream, it streamed the titles !!! I even switched songs a bunch of times and the titles kept coming...streaming OGG !!! I have not been able to recreate this so far...probably won't be able to. I was amazed it was working, and then it stopped. Weird huh?

"Display track titles when streaming Ogg Vorbis" means that SoundPlay will *display* title-info (if available) when you're *listening* to an Ogg Stream, not that LiveEncoder will stream out that title-info (which is what you want, IIRC). The latter is a lot more complicated, and I haven't gotten around to it yet.
Now, the format in which Icecast-servers send out this title-info seems to have changed slightly recently, and the new version won't work with SoundPlay 4.9. This will be addressed soon.

Hi Marco,
The features of 4.9 says this - "Display track titles when streaming Ogg Vorbis," however I can't seem to get it working. I have been waiting for this for one since we last communicated and you indicated that you figured out how to it with an Ogg stream. I am streaming Soundplay to Soundplay with Ogg...no titles.
Any ideas?
Thanks again for the great app and for the personal support!

When you get a KDL, you have a kernel-crash. There are no parts of SoundPlay that run in the kernel. KDLs are usually caused by buggy drivers or bad hardware. In the absence of broken drivers and bad hardware, an app would have to be actively trying to do something malicious, and SoundPlay is not such an app. The fact that SoundPlay showed up in the KDL-dump doesn't mean that much. It just means that one of SoundPlay's threads was the active userland thread when the KDL happened.

Hi, all,
Well I have now been using Soundplay as a replicant since the tracker will not crash anymore when I use the playlist editor. However, I started to see KDL. The first time I thought it was a fluke, since that was only the second time in my BeOS life (eight months) I have ever seen it. Then it happened once more, thought it was something else I had installed in the input server add-ons. Then again, and this time, before rebooting, I noticed the word Soundplay in KDL. Hmm, I rebooted out of necessity into Windows. Came back later into BeOS, it happened again, and this time I saw SoundPlay again. I have not read or copied the rest of what was in KDL because I have not made the time for it, and have not used Soundplay as a replicant since. No more KDL's. (I have needed my system to work lately.) I just thought that I might share this. I don't know when I'll experiment with the replicant again, as these days I need my system to work without fail. I have been using both 5.0.3 and PhOS with the replicant, more so PhOS lately, and know it happened there. I am not sure it has happened in R5.0.3 . Again I don't know when I'll get the chance to test it again, so I decided to share this here and ask if anyone else has had this happen to them on any system. When I do test, and perhaps find KDL, Marco, I'll be sure to record the KDL info, and send it to you.

Have you actually used that control? That "second fader" is used for left/right balance. The fact that CL-Amp uses it for speed control only confirms that CL-Amp is a bad WinAmp clone. ;)

I opened up CL-Amp & Sound play side by side... the starting sound play volume is the same as CL-Amp maxed. Since, if it's indeed only at 50% I find it hella annoying it goes back to 50% every time you open the app instead of the volume you left it at. Once you go higher then what is visibly half way on the volume fader it starts to sound nasty.
Winamp does have speed there, thats why the skins have that second fader control there, it's had it for years.

well I think I found the issue for the distortion & it simply points back to me not knowing the app. The volume seems to go to 200%, When it starts it starts at 100%. This was annoying to me because it seemed to regress for my changes every use since it sits at what would be 50% if this was winamp on the winamp skin mode. I think the station was simply being over driven to death & as I turned it down it was still distorting because well I was still over 100%
Volume by mouse is generally only useable when the app is active but it's kinda default feature in most all players like Soniqe, Winamp, Cl-Amp, XMMS, etc... I'm just used to these things being there.
Sadly much of Soundplays power I think is also what has kept me from buying it or liking it all these years. Un-uniform UI when skinned, no mouse control, no pitch/speed in Skin mode... small things that don't act or behave as I expect. So I'd say if you where to skin the rest of the elements they also would have differant functions for what they would do if being used on say Winamp or CL-Amp. I'm not sure what good 200% volume is unles your listening to say mp3's ripped from an old record but I'd say you have reasons for adding all the features you have. If you ever choose to add kinda a backwards feel to Soundplay for people hard wired to these other apps a user setable volume limit would be cool so when the volume is at max it's at 100%. or even 50%, parent settable like so your kinds can't blow their ear drums out with head phones :)

There is no mouse-wheel volume control (it would be of limited use anyway, as it could only work when the SoundPlay-window was active).
There's always a *chance* I will add skins for more things ;)
As for the distortion: SoundPlay uses the system mp3 decoder, and doesn't do anything else to the sound as long as you haven't activated any plugins. MediaPlayer therefore should sound *exactly* the same. If not (and you mentioned SoundPlay was the only app that had this problem), I can only guess that you have enabled a plugin. An interesting thing to try would be to enable the "Scope" visualization, right-click on it, and select the "Sonogram" mode. If this high-frequency distortion is actually part of the audio coming out of SoundPlay, it should be visible there.

I guess after all these years this question will be a "No" but I'll ask any how. ;) Any chance you might make the app uniform when in Winamp skin mode? aka EQ & Playlist skinned?

It is not entirely clear to me if this distortion happens when you're using SoundPlay to listen to a stream, or when you're using it to generate a stream (using LiveEncoder). In both cases, make sure you don't have any effect-plugins that could cause this. When using LiveEncoder, try increasing the quality by changing the options to the encoder.

I have another bug for you Marco, unless it has already been reported (I am not reading through ninety-some posts to find out) and I just learned that on PhOS, and perhaps other BONE flavors, people had had trouble with using Soundplay 4.8.1, and I figured out a fix for it for now.
First, the bug. I like having a large playlist (+600 files) when I use Soundplay, and when I randomize my list, it works, fine, the problem occurs when I hit the "sort by name" button after randomizing. The CPU usage goes through the roof, and while I might stick around to see if it eventually sorts, I have not. It works fine when I hit sort by path, however, my files are organized by name, so I really don't randomize ever using Soundplay, which I like to do, or I do, and reinstall my playlist. (A pain in the butt).
OK, to use Soundplay in PhOS, and perhaps other troublesome BONE versions, I replaced the mpeg1audio_fh.decoder files in PhOS with the R5.0.3 versions. Works fine so far. Whether you need to replace both files, or just need to switch the two in PhOS around remains to be seen. I just know this works. The two files in PhOS have different "modified" dates under their attribute headings, so I guess they are different. Allright, ciao!

Yeah, yeah! I posted on the MusicManager talkback section. I wanted to thank you for your response there, I just wasn't sure if it was OK just to say thanks in talkback and take up more space. I actually don't have any music on my BFS partitions . . . yet? . . . so I won't really use it. I did get the r5 binary of MusicManager to work though, so that's why it didn't work at first. Thanks!

One solution to your problem could be to use (my) MusicManager2:
http://www.bebits.com/app/3854
It's a separate playlist maker/SoundPlay controller/audio finder app that I use for controlling a SoundPlay replicant embedded in my Desktop.
Doesn't fix the bug, but could be used as a work-around :)

It would be nice if SoundPlay could handle mp3 and ogg files tagged with ReplayGain info (http://www.replaygain.org/) some popular players already do that. It would be very useful
for people listenning their collections or even TuneTracker users playing songs at their radio at equal loudness.
Of course there is an excellent http://www.bebits.com/app/3139 Mp3 Gain app on bebits but it modifies mp3 files instead of creating metadata info.
IMHO Using metadata and interpreting it at playback is much better. It gives you freedom to use Track Gain or Album Gain or no adjustments at all.

I've tried several in Windows, and so far, nothing comes close.)

The bluish border is the same color that the BeOS desktop background is set to. You may have an image for wallpaper, but there is still a color assigned as the background color. If you have a plain blue background (like the default one) and you drag the replicant onto the desktop, then the colors will match and it will appear transparent. There may be a way to do that with image backgrounds, but I'm not aware of it.

Howdy,
What you are refering to is a replicant.
SoundPlay can be replicated onto any view (app drawing interface... the things you see) that allows it, not just the Desktop.
However, you must select 'Show Replicants' in the Deskbar (Be Menu) to see the funny looking little dragger. Just click and drag that funny looking thing to the Desktop.
This is not supported with a skin other than the BeOS Interface, that I know of.
Have fun!

I recently found out that you're able to assign a shortcut Alt+Shift+[number] to every filter and visualization plugin (right-click on a filter in the Filters Preference Panel).
These shortcuts work of course also when only the main window is visible. So, we're halfway to a solution. The remaining problem is: how do you deactivate a filter? Pressing the shortcut again will add another instance of the filter instead of deactivating it. If this functionality is to be kept, how about deactivating a filter with Alt+Shift+[number]?
