This will always work so long as there is a connection between the machines.
It's the UNC path though, a pipe is more like:
\\<servername>\pipe\<pipename>
e.g.
\\192.168.0.10\pipe\mattspipe

This needs someone to rewrite the cifs and cifsmount part of BeOS.. it's possible it works with BONE (though SAMBA will not)
If you edit your hosts file, the Network Neighborhood may well start to work.. I have not tried this recently myself though.
I downloaded the SAMBA source the other day for a later version (as well as the original source for the same version BeOS already has) and so I might look at the diffs to see if a port of that newer version is possible. Please do not hold your collective breaths though!!

On WinXP these are found (on my machine) here:
c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc
You will find a 'hosts' file and a 'lmhosts.sam' file. The lmhosts.sam is a SAMple and you can probably ignore it unless you have a lot of problems still. Open the hosts file in notepad (it is a text file) and add a line in the format:
MACHINE_IP MACHINE_NAME MACHINE_ALIAS
eg. I have:
10.0.253.6 loki loki.beos
It's exactly the same file and format as the BeOS one (you can find this BeOS file in /boot/beos/system/etc iirc) Add a line for every machine. The machine name is the one you wist to access the machine as. The alias is an alt name.
N.B. this forces you to use fixed IP addresses. This is not a problem though because if you have a router, it will be able to accomodate this in its configuration.

Yes:
/boot/beos/system/servers/samba/logs
There will be a smbd.log and a nmbd.log. smbd does the sharing and nmbd announces the availability of the computer on the network irc.
Are you people having problems with the PPC (PowerPC) version or the Intel version? No one seems to have made that clear. (However, they should both work identically in theory.)

Here are the most common problems:
Firstly, Host file... add in your IP Address on the Windows machines host and lmhost file (yes NT has one of these..) This is *very* important unless you have WON running or you have a DNS server configured on your network (nmbd should do this, but doesn't seem to work on NT5 based networks.) Otherwise you *must* use the IP address only. I always go via the run menu (on my network for example, "\\10.0.253.6\baron" works everytime.)
I would advise fixed IP addresses.
Secondly, you have to set the correct IP range in the Allow Hosts line of the /boot/beos/system/servers/samba/libsamba.cfg. I think I added a comment about this to the generic BeOS readme written by Fyysik (READMEENGSAMBA or something like that... name escapes me ATM) If your IP range is 10.X.X.X you need atleast "10. 127." and if you use 192.168.X.X you need "192.168. 127." otherwise you will never be allowed to connect by SAMBA.
Thirdly, you *MUST* make sure the computer name and the name you specified in the samba.cfg match. This will also cause no end of troubles if not correct.
I have set up XP and 2000 machine, and got them to talk to BeOS intel and PPC with these files with no problem. BeOS does *not* like talking to 2000 and XP. his is something I have got working, but onece your network needs the more complex security model demanded by many corperate MS netwroks, you loose this ability :-( The next stem is for someone to port a newer version of SAMBA I guess...

For acessing samba/cifs shares and printers there is built-in command in BeOS - cifsmount.
Search internet for this word and read articles an www.betips.net

I have installed SAMBA and it is working, but I still have a few questions and bugreports:
1. Can I mount samba shares?
2. Is there a gui samba browser?
3. How can I print to a remote windows printer?
4. The only way to make SAMBA work for me was to add a netbios alias - the alias works, but the original host does not(it can be seen but not browsed). Without adding an alias the host can not be browsed. I would rather not have the BeOS computer listed twice.
5. Without specifying MSUSERNAME samba crashes and sends you in KDL when a local share is accessed from a remote computer. The doc says this is not obligatory.
6. The BeOS SAMBA FAQ & forum link is dead.

Sure, there are lots of documents included in the zip - but very little along the lines of worthwhile in actual troubleshooting. From reading the documentation you will note very little support is provided without desire to pay for commercial support. Certain error messages received while trying to do a 'standard/unsecure install' reference items not covered in FAQs and related sources.
Upon throughouly reading through available documentation included both in the zip and online (samba.org) - was unable to successfully get service running. If you're unwilling to pay for commercial support and have any trouble not outlined in the narrow FAQ, you can count on spending some hair-pulling time into something which you won't actually get resolved.
Software may function correctly, and well, for some users - but for those who experience problems during installation, lack of support becomes a very big 'negative' issue. Personally, I'd just wait for BONE.
