Good luck then.
NVidia maybe one of the most used brand, but it's also one of the most closed one, despite having Linux drivers. The fact is they do Linux drivers, but of course those are closed source, and you'd get more change winning the lottery than getting specs from NVidia :-(

Ive got a brand spanking Gateway Profile 4 SE, it has a GeForce2 MX/MX400. Firstly out of the shop it wouldnt allow for a Clone screen (I'm trying to get a 15" LiteMax LD1501 going) to work at all. "New Drivers" was the reply from gateway, so i installed the 4.0.72 from nvidia.
Now the Clone works, but it always resets on reboot, and the second screen has to be set up every time which is unacceptable. Any ideas?

You can get your G4 MX 440 card to work in colour with the Vesa Acepptens pakage, but just in 60Hz. Problably you can adjust the Hz manualy, have not have the time to look in to it, but you can watch DVD with Video Lan with out any problem(Exept the bugs i Video Lan). Looking foreward to the new drivers.

No, it is not as easy. Some people tried to patch this old driver to work with the GeForce4 TIs, and they failed, because the 2D core has been modified by nvidia. It is not 100% compatible with the older chips.
You will need the source code of this driver in order to add support. Sorry.

Isn't there some way you can hack the drivers so that recognize the newer chips?? I mean, the old drivers SHOULD work with the new cards, shouldn't it? It's just a matter of the drivers not realizing the new cards are NVidia, isn't it?

I've downloaded this driver and installed in on Gateway Profile 4 . . . which has onboard nVidia geforce2 MX 400 . . . CardID 110.
nVidia driver is running but LCD display is just solid distorted blue screen. From recent nVidia / Linux document plus simple experiments I've discovered nVidia sets my LCD monitor "by default" as monitor 2.
If I plug a CRT monitor into the VGA port on the back . . . then I do get 640 X 480 X 8 BeOS display (after entering cntl + alt + shift + F12. But it won't let me reset to a higher resolution . . . and the LCD monitor is still solid distorted blue.
Anybody know how to tweak (e.g. horizontal, vertical sync) a BeOS monitor? In this case monitor 2?
BTW, these default settings might explain why so often notebook BeOS / nVidia users encounter similar problems.
Thx.

No guarantees, but we are working hard to maintain binary compatibility to the point that we can use existing video drivers. Accelerants are another thing altogether (since that API was not really documented), but the basic drivers should (hopefully) still work.

It should be possible to port/adapt the (mostly) open-source nVidia driver for linux. Rudolf Cornelissen (the brains behind BeTVOut) has done a bit of work on nVidia driver support, and AFAIK he plans to tackle this in the near future...
It would just be nice if nVidia would provide some actual documentation on their hardware. :(

Yes, the ASUS GeForce2 MX400 card you are referring to will work with the Unified nVidia Driver on x86 systems. (PCI Cards Included.) No existing BeOS video drivers provide TV-Out support, however, but there is a utility called BeTVOut ( http://betvout.sourceforge.net ) that will allow you to set up TV-Out on this card and a variety of other nVidia-based cards. I have the AGP version of this card and have tested it myself.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
My local dealer has a Asus V7100 GeForce2 MX-400 32MB PCI,(7100/PRO/T32MB)TV-out. Does anybody know if I would get this to work with TV-out?
I've been looking all over to find any info, but I only see the AGP cards mentioned (although no mention of PCI cards NOT being supported).
Any hint appreciated.

Exar

Why are the GF2 and GF3 owners surprised that their cards work with BeOS? Doesn't the fact that they're listed in the nVidia ReadMe give a bit of a clue?
Wouldn't it be better to report only GF2/GF3 cards that /don't/ work? (most likely due to unrecognised card device IDs)
On the same lines, we know the GF4 series is not supported by the driver and does't work with the existing driver. I'm sure we'd all welcome information from anyone working to resolve this, or with ideas on how it could be done...

Works for me too, but that is not to say that it will work for all different models by different companies. It is known that some of them are changing the BIOS and other components in order to make them cheaper or to gain a bit of speed, resulting in a possible incopatibility with this generic BeOS driver. So, please cut off this "it works for me", it does not help the user neither answers his question.

Has anyone else actually tried patching the driver to recognise the new cards yet?
I had a quick go earlier today and replaced one of the GF3 entries with the ID for my Ti4200 (0x0253). It just gave me a non-syncing display at the point in the boot process where it switches video mode (my monitor reported it out of range). It did seem to recognise the ID though, as different values cause it to automatically fall back to the grey-scale driver.
Does anyone know what the structure of the PnP ID table is? Is there another table (besides the description strings) that needs patching too?
I wasn't sure about the situation for the binary editing files with resource streams, so I zipped the file up with no compression, edited the zip file, and extracted it (ignoring the CRC error). Hopefully that should be enough not to affect the test.
Si

I'm holding this upgrade off just because of BeOS support.
hmm... what will it be a GF3-200 or a GF4-4200?
I would have been very happy with an ATI-AIW 8500, but it's out of my budget.
Is there any other BeOS supported modern video card with Video-in?

Well, you mean, only three models, not cards.
Because GeForce4, comes as of now, as GeForce4 MX, 4200, 4400Ti, 4600Ti, plus the laptop GeForces that don't work at all with this driver.
I could hack the driver to add the GeForce4 hex IDs, but I am not sure that the driver will work, as I do not have a GeForce4 to test with, because nvidia may or may not have changed something in the 2D core since this driver was written. If there are any GeForce4 people over here with BeOS that would like to test a hacked driver, let me know, and I will get to work...
