Mystery solved?

I installed the original BeOS Pro Version 5.0 and installed the updates. I copied over the Gobe Productive files from Zeta 1.2. I ran the Gobe application and opened an image file with horizontal and vertical text frames. It printed perfectly. It must be the newer printer drivers that are giving me the problem.

I've had the same problem on many versions of BeOS -- Dano, PhosphurOS, Zeta 1.0, Zeta RC3, Zeta 1.0.

Updater Problem

Hey. Thanks.

I've tried the updater, but I keep getting errors: At first I got this error: ". . . files to be patched were not found." I reinstalled Gobe Productive 2.01 (from the original CD that I bought years ago), and now I'm getting a checksum error.

Which version of the BeOS are you using? If you are using Zeta with CUPs this is an unresolved bug in the HP driver, rather than in Productive which effects, as far as I can tell, all HP printers.
Given the state of things, and unless Vasper or someone else, works on the CUPs package this won't be fixed. Try R5?

When I print a document that I created containing vertically aligned text, the text is NOT vertical when I print it out, even using PDF Writer. Is there a fix for this bug in Gobe Productive?

P.S. I see a copy of Gobe Productive on Ebay:

Lists?!

Does anyone know how to use autonumbered lists on GP? It's really annoying when you have huge lists.

It's a sad day when every editor is either dry on features or crash-prone and MozComposer is the only option.

GP = strong reason to switch from Linux to BeOS

My deepest thanks to the developers of GP.

Mostly I use BeOS and Linux, occasionally switching a machine from one to the other. I had Linux on my Sony notebook the last few months, and just couldn't stand the fact the there weren't any pleasant-to-use, stable, reliable apps to do what GP used to do back when I had BeOS on the notebook last spring. This, and some other reasons, are why I recently reloaded BeOS on the notebook.

Indeed, despite the advantages of Linux such as being able to play with the latest GIMP, gcc, and fancy network stuff, I can't live w/o Gobe Productive for writing and graphics. Nothing else has the ability to read all my TrueType fonts, put writing at funny angles, with frames and all, with good WYSIWYG and not crash or act erratically. It's probably the only everyday piece of software that I paid for, and very glad that I did.

Now, how to convince Gobe to maintain it for BeOS...?

Still on printing .PDF ...

You can probably print PS in the ohter operating system with e.g. GhostView... no need to convert it to PDF.

If you still want to print PDF you can try this version of PDF Writer:
http://bepdf.sourceforge.net/temp/pdf_writer_v2.0b1_x86.zip
If the printout is not correct with PDF Writer, please email me (I have implemented transparency support in PDF Writer).

Ok, but is anyway to achieve it in BeOS? Maybe through GhostScript?

I use BePDF just for pdf viewing, as I have no BeOS-compatible printer. So, that is not my current problem. What I needed was to be able to create a document that would be graphically the same when printed under other platform. PDF would do it... Can't I print a .PS and then use GhostScript under BeOS to convert it into PDF? How do I do that? Would that .PS keep the transparency? Which printer should I configure in my system?

Printing into a .PDF file

As stated in the README file of PDF Writer, it does not support transparency yet. A new not yet as a package released version does to a certain degree support transparency (the source code is already in the OBOS cvs repository) .
But then the current available version of BePDF does NOT support transparency. An updated version of PDF Writer should be released RSN.
Can't say when an updated version of BePDF will be released.

Printing into a .PDF file / Saving as an image
 By victor.domingos - Posted on July 1, 2003 - 08:46:39   (#7976)

I have just bought Gobe Productive 2.0 and I am enjoying a lot its capabilities.

However, I found something that looks like a bug. When I print a GP document into a .PDF file (I have no BeOS-compatible printer) it will look ok except if the document has partial or total transparencies. The printing will behave like if there was no transparency. Is there any way to pass over this? Is there any patch from Gobe that covers this issue?

By the way... When I am in graphics environment and I save the document as an image (JPG/TIFF/TGA/...) the default resolution is the screen resolution. Is there any way to save those images in other resolutions, for remote printing, such as 150dpi or 300dpi?

Wonderful Software

I tried the trial version over a year ago and got hooked due tot eh fact it will open word documents and save in word document format our school uses. I use it full time now on my old machine for work. It was worth the 20 bucks that I spent at Microcenter for the open-boxed version.

I got a copy from purplus.com a couple of months ago. It was cheap as you like and even though they shipped it halfway round the world, it still arrived in pristine condition.

They're even selling BeOS Pro R5 and R4 (!)

you can find

you can find Gobe Productive 2 for sale at many cyber liquidartors for like $7 USD. Thats less the a trip to Burger King here so I deem that one bad 4$$ deal. hopefully you can find these deals & buy them up if for nothing else then to show people are still interested in software for BE.

I doubt it

I think the CD version is not copy-protected, and they do not use a keyfile to make it work. The trial version is most likely demo-only. You are in luck, however, because inexpensive copies can be easily had. I saw one on eBay tonight, and they pop up from time to time on the lowendmac.com swap list.

I might even end up with an extra copy in the next few days through a trade, so let me know offline (brianf68_REMOVE_@pacbell.net) if you would be interested in it.

Is there a way to simply register and use the DEMO version?

Gobe and Win 97. Where to put it?

From all the BeOS apps I have already bought, this is the one I like and I use most. It is really great, and it is worth it. I heard something the other day on the BeOS IRC Hispano channel. Apparently, the spanish Win97 dictionary can be use in Gobe too. Does anyone know anything about this, or/and how to install it?.

After checking out the demo for version 2.0 a couple of weeks ago (I was fed up with Office 2000, I immediately went out and purchased this amazing app. It has completely changed my work flow. I never thought I would enjoy writing a paper or designing a publication as much as I have with Productive v2.01. It is the total package. I can layer text on images with digital pictures or wrap them around each other, throw in a table or two as easy as it is to think about doing it. The workspace is very well organized. You can't go wrong with an Office Suite like Productive.
