Why the hell do you care if Quake III was ported in 1999? You weren't using BeOS then, you never got access to it, and most importantly:
THERES A PUBLICALLY ACCESSIBLE PORT NOW. Numpty.
|
|
| I'd be very interested in that as well. |

I also found some new evidence with Quake 3 on BeOS - appatently they had the same problems with the Port done by ID as the new open source port done.
ECTS 1999:
"They say Quake 3 isn't quite ready to be released yet (the frame rate is bad and the mouse is messed up) but it does run and looks good."
I will update my BeOS quake III webpage soon with more evidence and information later.

I can't believe that no one has kept these files around since back then. I don't even know what became of my copies. :/
How hard is it exactly to port this stuff over if you have acess to the sources?

I posted that in the agp thing (I think).
On the bebits quake2 bebits page use the tucows mirror (as that is the only one that works).
Do a search for q2-314-demo-x86.exe to find mirrors (as the id site can be busy and reject your connection. The file is about 40-50 megs (it is between that range).
Under beos rename that file to q2-314-demo-x86.zip and unzip it anywhere apart from your "QuakeII" folder and move the FILES in the Install/Data (not the folder) to your beos "QuakeII/baseq2" directory. Thanks to kraton for posting it in the QuakeII listing.

You need the Original-CD or the Demofiles and you have to mount your CD. I think it was like that.

After using Software Valet and then reading README from the Quake2 folder I tried to complete the installation by cd'ing to the Quake2 folder in terminal and running copyq2files.sh. All I got was the message: "copyq2files.sh must be run from the Quake2 folder. I thought that is what i've already done by cd'ing to it first. Any ideas why.? Am I missing some files or something that needs preinstalled first? I am using Max Edition v 3.1 b 1.

The current port has some glitches.
E.g. it uses the BeOS keymap instead of the US keymap. This results in strange behaviour in a few cases (like special the characters ä ö ü...).
Maybe a new port wouldn't be that bad, but I think unported games should be ported first (Hexen 2, OpenDuke,...)

I saw the previous comment about a broken link, and I remembered that Quake II has been open-sourced (using the GPL).
I know all the programmers already have projects, but has anyone thought about starting a new port? possibly one that could take advantage of 3d hardware (I know hardware OpenGL in R5 is only available as part of an "illegal beta" leak, but let the user be responsible for their own actions.)
If anyone is interested, a good place to start is probably Id's source code release (ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/source/) and some linux packages for Quake II (http://packages.debian.org/unstable/games/quake2.html).
