I'm the maintainer of Army Knife and I hope to provide a new package for download within a few days. The problem is I've lost the password to update this specific page. The page is BeUnited's and not editable by me without it.
BeUnited.org is shutting down, so I've moved the source of Army Knife to OsDrawer.net:
http://dev.osdrawer.net/projects/armyknife/
If you absolutely need Army Knife in the next few days, either mail me, get it from BeShare or download the source from OsDrawer.net and build it.

I can move the libtag.so to the /boot/home/config/bin but I want to stick to the original libstdc++.r4.so. Haven't installed latest gcc and I don't feel any need to right now....
that pretty much leaves AK out of Tracker add-on i suppose. Statically build libstdc++.r4.so with AK? I don't care about the binary size and would solve my problems...

Did you install the libs from the /lib directory in the Army Knife distro? AK won't launch without those - when started directly from its folder it will find the libraries, but not when launched as a Tracker add-on.
libtag.so should be in /boot/home/config/lib, but I'm not sure about the new libstdc++.r4.so - I installed the new gcc by Oliver Tappe, so I already had it in /boot/beos/system/lib. I don't know if it needs to be there or if you can just have the new version in /boot/home/config/lib. I think it would be safer to replace the original library in /boot/beos/system/lib.

It seems this ArmyKnife won't work as a Tracker add-on anymore.
I find it so much easier to right click a bunch of mp3s and right-click and invoke ArmyKnife rather than opening ArmyKnife first and then drag 'n drop (especially since ArmyKnife doesn't remember window position I need to keep moving it around before I can drop from the tracker).
Can you please make ArmyKnife work as tracker addon again??? I would be very grateful ...

Ram, there is a problem in what I've added to ArmyKnife in that I cache some file metadata in the BListView item, including the state of the tags. The tag info is not updated during the life of the list item, so changes to tags will not show up on the MPEG page. Try closing A.K. and reopening it, or looking at the files in DiskProbe. If an ID3v1 tag isn't added, that's very curious indeed! (I removed some with BeShare's filechopper and they were re-added ok.)

ID3v1 lives in the last 128 bytes of an MP3 file (starting with 'TAG'), whereas ID3v2 lives in the beginning of the file. I've seen a couple of bad files here with multiple ID3v1 at the end, which is really odd. Not sure why that happens. Badly formatted files, or a bug in TagLib? Anyway, please keep your eyes open and let me know what you find! (email) /Jonas.

Now applying tag only applies to id3v2 and there's no v1 tag (or doesn't apply any). Shown, by the "MPEG" tab as "0 id3v1 tag".

CDDB wasn't built to allow this. (Gracenote's CDDB2 may allow it. I don't know. But it's a non-free service in any case.)
CDDB allows you to look up album/track metadata from a calculated fingerprint of the album (as a whole).
Individual tracks don't carry this information, so it's not possible to make meaningful lookups via the CDDB protocol.

Hi,
Do you think it's possible toinclude an option to set ID'3 tag with a search on the web with the name of the file (find album an let choose to set the title)

If the option simply wasn't there before, then you were running an old version of SoundPlay.

Thanks Marco, I fixed it by running Soundplay 4.72, then going back to 4.73 the option had magically reappeared.
Any idea why?

I had this option before I reinstalled BeOS. Now I can't remember how I did it.

Be careful with writing ID3 tags to .ogg files - Army Knife does not really know how to handle .ogg, and mangles the file structure; ogginfo reports "Corrupted ogg" when checking such files.
I haven't experienced any problems playing such files with Soundplay so far, but you never know.
Just use attributes for the time being (what have you got BeFS for?), until a fixed version is available.

First, let me say, I have not used ArmyKnife in a long time, I just created the package, so, I am not completely familiar with its current capabilites.
Now, as much as I would like to help and to add that functionality, I currently do not have the time. But, that does not mean it can't happen. If someone would like to volunteer to do some work on ArmyKnife, please contact me, and I can grant CVS access to the source code.
The ArmyKnife source code is being hosted by beunited.org, but is not the sole responsability of beunited.org. It is the community's responsability as well, and will not progress without the community's help. So, if you are a developer in the BeOS community, and want to help, again, let me know.

Like ReName!, Jason continues to create great software that makes BeOS easier to use, no mean feat.
I have recently gotten into downloading MP3 files and MP3 Army Knife make writing out the ID3 Tags to BeFS attributes easy as 1-2-3.
I would recommend this program to anyone who uses MP3 files.
