As good as it is, BFS is not sufficient by itself to be an adequate database, if only because of its limited interface. I agree that a good solution is an app that, Like People, uses the BFS attributes. However, nobody seems to have done this. If I have to do it myself, I will, but I'm hardly an advanced programmer, and it will take me some time to do it. No doubt there will be some mistakes that I'll make, too.
As for Datawing, it's fine for its own niche, but it's hardly an end-user product for a "NewBe", although it looks like it can be used to create an end-user product.

Flat file Database in BeOS, What the...

BeOS has the most unique and wonderful file system, BFS. With it you already have built in Address Book, called People. Now the People App source code comes with BeOS R5. SO, if you want a Recipes App, Take that source code and change it. Better Yet, create an app the will allow a NewBE User to customize there flat file database, then Generate the Source (bases on people app source)and compile it on the Fly with a script. Now you would have a simple tool for NewBE's to create a custom Flat file Database of there choice with a custom File Icon that can be searched via FIND, and edited/updated in a Tracker Window, COOL!
Music Collections, come on dude! Where have you been? BeOS has the Best tools for Music Collections of any OS available.
Any of the MP3 attributes can be added to any audio/video file. You the user customize it! And once again, you can view/edit in a Tracker Window, COOL!
Contrary to popular belief, the BFS will handle huge quanties of indexes with virtually no slow down of the File System. Heck, that why it was designed Database Like, instead of a Real Database! Now DataWing, on the other hand is completely different. BFS provides Flat file databases with Indexes, while Datawing is providing a Real-Time True Multi-User Relational Database with "complete data-awareness". Something that Beos Desperatly Needs. I'm not too fond of a Single File Database, but I for one will be testing it very soon in the Real World with a Real Business. Yes the Business will be using BeOS R5 Pro until openBeOS is released. So why not send this guy $25.00 to encourage his efforts, or at least make a small donation for a much needed Database.
Well, Thats my 2 cents.

Flat database-Yes!

Yes, I think that a flat database (like Works) would be very useful for BeOS, for address books, recipes, music collections, what-have-you. I don't think Datawing quite fits the bill for that.

Works is a flat database, but it sells!

Exactly, Works is a flat database with limited (by normal RDB standards) query capabilities. Ideal for address books, CD collections and end users who don't want the hassle of a full database. Does BeOS need somthing like this? At the moment the BeOS databases are aiming at expert users. There are a few custom apps that fill niche markets like address books, but nothing, customisable like Works, that is aimed at non-expert users.

Works *does* have a database...

There is a database module in MS-Works. It's only a flat database, not relational, but I used it for years before I got a copy of Office 97 with Access.

Yes. I have some views on it.
The db capabilities come with Ms Office, not with Ms Works.

As part of my day job I have had the misfortune of getting Windows XP. It came with M$ Works preinstalled. I was tempted to look at the Database feature, which I hadn't seen in about ten years... I was amused to see that it was still *incomplete*. It made me realise something: All Datawing needs is simple reporting tools and a simple form designer and it will be walking all over M$ Works. Does anyone have any views on this?

looks interesting

I've wondered for some time whether there is a database app for BeOS that could take the place of Filemaker or Access. Looks like there is! Hmmm...now if I can only get a PPC version.... heh. ;-)
