1) Not played files with Cyrillic or files placed in to Cyrillic directories.
2) Mpeg1 and some Mpeg4(DivX,XviD)files played with sound distortions. In mediaplayer mpeg1 played fine!

Hi,
I tested 0.84 test1, and found an output window size error. Please look at my forum post (in the wrong forum I take it now), and fix it: it should be a simple matter:
http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=12758
If you would want to see the importance of the error for yourself, you'd need a matrox G400,450 or 550, or a nVidia card using BeTVOut or TVout now directly inside haiku driver 0.55 (single head only for now).
Posting this link here just to be on the safe side about you seeing it..
Thanks! :-)

has been working nicely for me so far with divx's under r5.0.3 netserver on a dual p3 (nice cpu load ballance too). now i need to find out what is the right string format for specifying the subtitles encoding. is it verbatimly the same as in the combo box of the osx version's subtitles encoding? btw, it'd be nice if the beos clinet had a combo there as well : )

I'm using BeOS 5.0.3 netserver on my vaio with a PII 330MHz.
VLC runs fine as long as I just play mpeg1 or 2 files. When I try to play a mpeg4 the video-window opens (totally black), sound starts playing and then the app crashes (sound is still playing untill I hit OK).
Version 7.2 doesn't crash, but shows just blackness while playing a mpeg4-file.

Thanks for your answer, but I am using a P4 2400Mhz system so I cannot use this app.
Beos R5.03 with cpu patch enabled. With Zeta no problems with celeron 400Mhz P3 no problem too to run vlc. Must be a problem with the P4?

From what I understand it looks like you need to enable the Ahlon SSE instruction in the R5.0.3 kernel, but since you are able to boot alright, it cannot be as yet enabled in the BIOS. I don't know how it could be detected that you're CPU supports SSE instruction if it is not enabled in the BIOS?
If this is so then use this app to enable it in R5
http://www.bebits.com/app/2833
After that go into you're BIOS setup and enable the SSE instruction there too. After rebooting this error should not occur from VLC.

Greetings,
The first time I tried 8.4-test; it crashed. I said, "#$%##", but I tried it again and seemed to correct its issue. I have tested the program by opening two different DVDs and opening two mp4s. It is great! I have removed 7.2 & 8.2-test from my system already. Thanks for the good work.

Now I found out that the test version doesn't work with many DVD's. Although a file on my HDisk played better then with version 7.2
Other problem is that I can't play a lot of DVD's with
7.2 either, it can be that these DVD's are copy protected, should that be a problem?
I also like to know what to do with the VCD script.
Can someone explain this to me?
Do I have to copy this script in a config folder?
How do I mark the file as executable.
VCD_MOUNT_DIR="/boot/home/vcd"
What does this mean? Do I have to make a folder vcd?
CDROM_RAW_DEV="/dev/disk/ide/atapi/1/slave/0/raw"
This one I understand.
VLC_BIN="/boot/home/vlc-0.4.2/vlc"
I guess in my case it must be :
VLC_BIN="/boot/apps/vlc-0.7.2/vlc"
unmount $VCD_MOUNT_DIR
If I make the folder /boot/home/vcd I get:
umount: invalid argument
mount -t vcdfs $CDROM_RAW_DEV $VCD_MOUNT_DIR
here I get : no such device
VIDEO_FILES=`ls $VCD_MOUNT_DIR/MPEGAV/*.DAT`
here I get :
/bin/ls: /boot/home/vcd/MPEGAV/*.DAT: No such file or directory
VLC_BIN $VIDEO_FILES
here I get : VLC_BIN: command not found
unmount $VCD_MOUNT_DIR
here I get : unmount: Invalid argument
Thanks

This version works better then the former ones.
I have a clip which stops near the end in version 7.2,
in version 8.2 it plays to the end. (wmv file)
Some of these files still don't play at all.
Is it possible to make a video stream from a cam and view
this stream over a network?
If so, how do I do that?

Yes, it seems cpu_fix helps pretty much all AMDs. Mine is a 2400+ (runs at 2Ghx) and used to pitch shift, now it's fine. (BeOS thought it was running at 2010Mhz, cpu_fix changed it to 1998Mhz or something)
As someone else mentions below, you may need to increase your buffer sizes to stop dropping completely.

Reading that you guys have solved the pitch issues with the cpu_fix, does the CPU fix solve the pitch shifting for CPU's under the 2.1 mark? I have the pitch issues on my 550 & 1800. I just tried a nightly build but all the streams are garbled & it drops like mad.
Any ideas would be appreciated for sure.

The 0.71 version still produces horrible aliasing in the sound even with cpu_fix BUT the audiodropouts are gone! (no more starved audiobuffer messages!)
I have Genelec studio monitors (loudspeakers) and I use soundplay for playback, sfx and lot's of audiowork and no audio aliasing problems!

Hi rayesteq
First of all, this is not quite the right place to ask a Linux question, as this site is all about the Be Operating System, which is not a form of Linux.
To your question. Mozilla does not automatically know how to handle wmv files. If you want them to automatically open in VLC you have to tell Mozilla to do so by setting a Helper Application under Edit -> Preferences -> Navigator -> Helper Applications. There you can add a new filetype and choose VLC as the preferred application.
If this is to complicated, you can just right click on the link and save the file to your harddisk. You can then try to open it with VLC.
Hope this helps.

I will try it as soon as I can, but it does make a lot of sense, since I have 512MB and I always played those movies off a CD, so it could be that disk cache overflow problem. Perhaps, if I copied the file to the hd first, the systems would have crashed anyways? I'll check out. Thanks!

Yes, you right, i'm using 5.03+bone.
I'll try to build vlc on net_server and will post results here. Thanks for explanation.
It would be very nice if titer will add support in makefiles for bone and checking for installed Perl, so build process will go smoothly without any workarounds.

Has anyone experienced consistant kernel crashes, after 10 or 15 minutes of playing a divx movie? I experienced this problem with several versions of VCL player (last 0.7.2) and it is relatively hard to reproduce, athough I get sent to KDL very often. It's only divx and always after at least 10 min into playtime. Now, since it is a kernel crash, is it possible that there's something wrong bith my NVidia driver? Anybody else with that problem?

I've been trying to build on net_server but hit a few problems too.
Perl wouldn't build, I removed that from the makefile (I already have 5.8.0 binary installed, I hoped that would be good enough). Some of the other packages needed some things #undef ing to build properly, but I eventually got all the extras built.
When I went to build the main vlc, there was an error about something like SCOPE_ALL being undefined - I think it's something to do with matroska, as configure also threw up a warning about that. Any ideas? If not, how do I disable building that module (I haven't got many matroska files!) so I can get on with building the rest of vlc to hopefully have a look at the pitch shift issue.
Cheers,
Simon

I think you tried to compile it under Bone/Dano.
I have to avoid you here - even if i tell you how to workaround this problem for perl, you will get it again and again.
Currently VLC build system is oriented to netsever, don't test for BONE presense and lacks ifdefs for that case both in makefiles/configs as in h/c/cpp codefiles.
After manually correcting it to build under bone several times, i finished by setting separate netserver partition specially dedicated for VLC compilation.

I've tried to build vlc several times and made it according to this HOWTO: http://developers.videolan.org/vlc/beos-compile.html
I've downloaded svn and checkout sources, then in extras/contrib/
i ran ./bootstrap && make src.
It starts building, but then stops with this error:
make[2]: Entering directory `/boot/home/src/vlc-trunk/extras/contrib/src/perl'
`sh cflags "optimize='-O'" miniperlmain.o` -fpic miniperlmain.c

Can't build Perl? It can't find socket.h. How could i fix it?
Help please.

I get this out of sync issue on my 2.8Ghz laptop. I also notice that media player cuts off audio files short, and it seems porportional to the length of the audio file (longer audio, cuts off more).
This is definitely an issue that needs to be addressed in BeOS, but I don't think it's a VLC problem but, as said previously, a problem with a Be lib that it uses.
