Howto Turn OFF Streaming?
 By IBeDuke - Posted on June 12, 2003 - 19:19:31   (#7689)
Current version when comment was posted: 0.5.3
My DVD played fine (except audio couldn't keep up).

Then I turned on streaming to save a video segment to disk by entering: $ ./vlc --sout (and so forth)

That seemed to work fine too. Now how do I turn streaming OFF so I can watch the video on my monitor again?

What about new codecs?

It will rock if you'll support wmv3 codec and Indeo video. So we don't have to reboot in windoze to play this movies.

Please merge with fyysik's priority patches.

Titer, could you please add fyysik's priority patches, since VLC with his patch work a way better, but he did it only for 0.6-test1 version. Please contact him for more info. Thanks.

Could you please fix the following things:

-If main window is active you can no longer press
space bar to pause.
-If in video window you press up or down arrow, this will make VLC to play current file from start. I suggest to make up/down arrows volume control.
In preference window when using keyboard only it will be very nice if when i press right arrow it will expand collapsed menus (Modules, etc)
-If click on a time of the movie it will show how many minutes are left(savable option please)

BTW, how to make a translation file, i'd like to do that.

Thats all, thanks.

Most elegant slider concept i seen in Stippi-s audioeditor, but i wonder how suitable it may be for videoplayer case.

i also have a comment about seeking precision. 2 hour movie make current BeOS player slider obsolete (it was fine in the 2 minute mpeg era).

it curently suck :). This need to be the #1 GUI enhancement. I have no easy way to do it. Problem is that it need to be visually obvious from the go, so hidden mouse button trick is not good solution.

The current slider concept is still good and need to stay for quick approximative move in the file. but we need a smooth approach solution. I guess the best would be having the equivalent to the sound button in sound play but stationary and infinite (not really infinite but the same rotation increment that the file as frame). That button could have mouse over detection and allow mouse wheel for easy frame by frame navigation.

For those having used video editing gear you will know what i mean.

Titer, look please on BeOS SoundRecorder.
It can resize this app to "arbitrary" width (at least 4096?).
And this allows quite exact positioning in media file.
Maybe same is posssible for VLC MediaPlayer too.

It will be very nice, if you can place slider to choosen frame more exactly than it is possible now.

I also enjoyed the one-click feature. Is there any way you could possibly detect whether that click is on a DVD menu item .. and if it's not, then popup the interface?

First of all I want to thank you for your work, dudes. 0.6 Rocks!
Bugs:
Didn?t plays short movies (0.13 seconds mpeg video) it?s only show first frame and then nothing or even couldn?t show anything, but sound plays as it should to be.
Requests:
I?ve only had 2 movies left that didn?t opened in VLC and this is because of Indeo Video 3 and 5. Are you planning to add codecs for these formats? Or this is ffdecoder related question?
Suggestions:
Thanks for adding shortcuts for fullscreen, 50%, 100% and 200%, but it is not obviously to guess them, so please add them to the context menus.
Could you please add Info window, which will show which codecs is in used to play audio and video like it did in MediaPlayer (Alt+I), because this is always difficult to find this information in the Messages window through all that mess. This will be very cool.

Thanks again!

Hey, this is the best version of VLC yet. It can now play a whole stream of Quicktime movies (Sorenson codec), including the new Matrix trailer. Fantastic.

Best of all, it seems as if the picture quality shits all over my Apple Quicktime, and the CPU usage is oh-so-small. Bloody brilliant in my book.

Check your DVD drive, I have similar hardware to you but my rather cheap DVD drive causes VLC to drop a lot of frames. Also, I noticed a considerably better performance when I upgraded from 128MB RAM to 256MB, maybe you have a similar issue? I ran VLC on a Athlon 750 with a Voodoo3 for a while and the only thing that helped was more RAM and a different drive.

Another alternative would be the middle mouse button. Anyway, thanks for all the work, vlc is really great!

This has been removed yet because it is annoying to have the interface showing when you click on a DVD menu while being in fullscreen. For now, you can (in 0.6.x) right-click on the picture and click "Show interface".

Since the last release 0.5.3 (it worked with earlier releases), you cannot go to the controls in full screen mode anymore - you have to leave full screen mode to see the control window.
With earlier releases, you just had to press a mouse button in full screen mode and the control window showed up. Could you please fix it again?

Why can't VLC play .dat format video files?

Is the codec difficult to make? If so, is there no player in BeOS that can play .dat movies? (VCDs)

That apart, I haven't had a single crash with it... Great app.

A bunch of questions...

What output modes are available for the BeOS port? I notice that it detects three output modes, but I can't seem to figure out what they are...

Also, vlc is dropping *tons* of frames when I run a DVD. Any suggestions on improving the overall performance? I have an Athlon 750 w/ a Voodoo3, so I don't think poor hardware is really the issue...

B_RESERVE_OVERLAY_CHANNEL
 By rudolfc - Posted on May 4, 2003 - 23:10:18   (#7172)
Current version when comment was posted: 0.5.3
Hi BGA,

You are right. Because you reported Nvidia working after all, I just retested this stuff with the Matrox driver on VLC.

Here's how it works:
If you want to use overlay, you have two 'low level' choices.

1. you create bitmaps, you reserve the overlay channel, and you display the bitmaps.

2. you reserve the overlay channel, you create bitmaps, and you display the bitmaps.

The first option consists of creating bitmaps without the RESERVE_CHANNEL flag, and then just use SetViewOverlay() to display the bitmaps, using the TRANSFER_CHANNEL flag. Under the hood, the app_server will take care of reserving the overlay channel after you call SetViewOverlay automatically.

The second option consists of you creating the first bitmap _with_ the RESERVE_CHANNEL flag set, creating the rest _without_(!), and then call SetViewOverlay() to display the bitmaps using the TRANSFER_CHANNEL flag.

The difference is that if some other app (or so) is also trying to become the 'owner' of the overlay unit at the same time, your changes are better of actually getting it with the second option.

Here's what I saw in the older versions of VLC: VLC tried to create all bitmaps with the RESERVE_OVERLAY_CHANNEL flag. This is _not_ the way to do it. The driver will block creating the second and later bitmaps (if the driver is setup right) because the single available unit in the hardware is already occupied.

On cards that would have a second unit this could succeed, but you would get unwanted results..
(I've never heard of such a card yet BTW)

BTW:
The SWITCH_CHANNEL flag is there because the app_server can call the driver equivalent of SetViewOverlay() by itself also. The app_server will probably keep this flag clear (got to confirm that yet though) because it does not want to switch between bitmaps, but only wants to move or resize the output window for the currently displayed bitmap (and later).

If you have the bug I reported assigned to you, will you update it's status?? If not, let me know please: I will do it then. Thanks a lot, and sorry for any inconvenience I caused..
Still got to learn here (also) apparantly ;-)

Best regards,

Rudolf.
(Matrox driver)

I do use a GEForce and I have no problem with the overlay. As I understand it the B_BITMAP_RESERVE_OVERLAY_CHANNEL flag is used to tell the system you want an overlay.

Actally it works all the time. Do the following:

1 - Open a movie file. When it starts to play, stop it.
2 - Use the open subtitle option and load the subtitle.
3 - Hit the play button to restart the video.

When seeking, it takes sometime to resynchronize the subtitles it looks. Wait a bit (as long as 1 minute, I noticed) and the subtitles will appear again.

Adding a subtitle to a Divx video sometimes work, sometimes not. This is very strange, I couldn't find any logic on that.

Sometimes Ok, sometimes not.

If I jump to any part of the video file, then it doesn't work anymore.

Hi guys,

I just had a quick look at the BeOS voutput module, and I saw that the first overlay bitmap is created with the :
B_BITMAP_RESERVE_OVERLAY_CHANNEL
flag set!

AFAIK This will prevent overlay from working on GeForce cards?!?
B_BITMAP_RESERVE_OVERLAY_CHANNEL makes sure you are unable to switch to other overlay bitmaps.. (maybe creating more overlay bitmaps is also prevented then..)

I might be mistaken, it has been a long time since I actually tested with that...
Anyone had trouble with overlay on GeForce cards with VLC0.53?

Thanks for the great work BTW!

Rudolf.

I assume you tried to play the video from fat(win partition), copy the video to your beos partition and then play it. There should be no problems.

I just downloaded the new version yesterday because I wanted to play back the ZETA movie from CBIT. I ran this movie on win98 with version 5.02 from DIVX and that worked out fine.
I wanted to run on my BeOS setup and downloaded VLC. It did run, but with some problems. The processor could not handle the load and the movie stalled. When stopped and started further it did ran for a couple of seconds and stalled again.
I have an AMD 1400 ATHLON with 256 MB of mem. I also try to run a DVD (sopranos) and this worked very well. Load on the processor up to 80 percent. I suspect the DIVX decoder is not very efficient compared to the MPEG2 decoder.
Any other suggestions??

Regard, Bert

After I typed 'unreal', then 'continue' and after that I was able to quit VLC without having to reboot (The thread was killed). Thank you.

Unfortunately, I don't have enough skill to accomplish: "try to throw the busy thread in the debugger and do a stack crawl."

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Try this:
- get to KDL (hit SysReq (along with AltGr on some keyboards) and D)
- type:
unreal
continue

and see if you can do something else... if you can then vlc probably is busy looping in a real-time priority thread.
If you can, try to throw the busy thread in the debugger and do a stack crawl. You will want to install Process Controller if not done already.
