VLC tends to crash... ALOT now. Doesn't seem to care about format or anything else. Some times it will play movie fine then crash non stop after it... I can load the same movie that just played fine & it will crash... & not play again at all till I reboot. Then it might play 5 min untill it crashes again :) dangit! crash != feature! heh Anyway Fix please... PRETTY please

Overlay support on my comp (K6-2 with Nvidia Geforce2 gfx) is completely broken. Trying to force it with --overlay on the commandline doesn't work either - all video is displayed as bitmap.
http streaming nearly works, but not quite. I've tried an asx stream, which plays for a couple of seconds and then just occasional packets of sound. The messages window shows lots of errors about PTS being out of range. Does vlc buffer at all? It's a 19Kb stream over a 56k modem. I've tried playing with --ttl but it doesn't seem to do anything?
Anyway, once the bugs are fixed, vlc will be a really cool media player. But it's still a way off yet.

it just throws to KDL after few minutes :(
someting is really wrong with disk cooperation, i don't have such problems with nplay nor media player, so it must be a bug which is active (or can be seen) on some configurations.

CKJ: VLC handles the MMS protocol (used by many webradios) and handles ASF as well. For instance, try in a Terminal:
'vlc -vvv mms://viptvr.yacast.fr/encoderfranceinfo'
verranm: it's a known issue, but such DVDs are quite rare. Can you make a piece of VOB file available somewhere ?
CJ: VLC cannot read RealVideo because no opensource decoder currently exists for it. Remember the one in R5 Pro is _not_ free.

How about adding support for Real Video? It already works in beos...although I havent been able to get my pro one to work in Dano which means Zeta will probably be lacking RP aswell, so why not build a codec into VLC?

Well, stability seems to have been cracked in this release! Congratulations to the VideoLAN team.
Is anyone else experiencing issues with the audio playback in VLC 0.5.2?
My two problems are:-
1) two dvd's using Linear PCM - one plays audio, the other one doesn't - its heavily distorted.
2) audio playback speed seems to drift (my dvd's are a PAL, so maybe it doesn't happen with NTSC?)

I was hesitant to post as I wasnt totaly sure the older VLC could play certain episodes well as it's been so long since I watched some of them but I'm finding ALOT of my mpegs & avi's that used to play fine arent playing well & it's the audio problem BGA is disscussing. No sound for the most part but little plops & blurbs here & there.

I have this Futurama episode where the audio does not work. I simply hear some "plops" from time to time. Here is what I get when running vlc from the command line:

Hello I would die for Hauppauge Nova support in VLC for BeOS. Since the digitaltv-boom it would be very cool! I know alot of people watch TV in BeOS, it is one the nifty functions in beos, the inbuilt analog tv support ;-)
Make it digital please =D

Can you please add next shortcuts to vlc
Alt+1 - 100% (window size)
Alt+2 - 200%
Alt+F - Fullscreen
and some others?
hmm... Maybe it will be a bit more difficult but it will be great if vlc can provide some information about used codecs similar to MediaPlayer's info window (Alt+I)
I still miss raw audio codec :(

1) Open and closing scripts -- this is useful since my TV is connected to my computer via X10, and It would be fantastic if VideoLan could turn on and off my TV automatically via scripts.
2) Save to beos as an attribute "playing time" (if possible, even if it means it can only write this information if the file is played all the way through.
3) Intercompatibilty with MediaPlayer's playing time.

yeah, that might by a solution, but if I just want to watch a movie while working, I set the window to "always on top" and I don't like to have tab's there. And always running hey by a script is not a "real" solution.

I realize this is more of a hack than a real solution, but you could always grab hey and do 'hey vlc set Look of Window 1 to 2' from Terminal.
Possibly some syntactic changes there but should more or less work.

Well better the before with the defualt mpeg processing at none, but the seek sucks. I tried zipping to the end of a divx to see if the movie was full length cuz I didnt remember the dl finnishing & after about 5 min of watching it SLOWLY try to seek forward I estimated it would take a half hour to get to the end... not good :(

There is option in configure to build mozilla VLC plugin for unices. Though, i'm afraid, it relies on X11 - so is unusable in current form for BeOS in straightforward compile. But maybe i'm wrong

Trying to tune priorities.
Noticed than increasing priority of input thread to 15-20 (in addition to proposed lowering for decoders thread) allows me to watch my worst-coded DivX (Crounching Tiger...)
So this is call to experiment, especially to user of low-end machines. Maybe we should fine optimal relation between thread priorites for BeOS port with collective efforts

I think the decoder priority is too high.
When I start a movie it is Display Priority (15) and the movie and audio are choppy.
After I set it to Lowest Active Priority (1) the movie and audio plays flawless.

I've tried several DVDs, but it just won't work. It looks like it reads/plays a bit, but then it just stops. Sometimes it emits a short burst of sound. I had a really old version of VLC (0.2.92) on my machine, and it plays those same DVDs just fine (and yes, I tried removing the VLC preferences). Does the new VLC require the installation of additional stuff before it'll work?

I grabbed the new VLC & foolishly over wrote my old stable version. This version defualts to max mpeg4 processing & causes some crappy happenings. My audio becomes horribly choppy & non existant after about 3 seconds & if I change the processing to none it just reverts to max every time VLC is reopened. Also the sync is horrible if I change to none & restart the video.

OK, i've checked again cache settings and i have:
disk_cache_size 16384 # max number of blocks to cache
/boot/home/config/settings/kernel/drivers/kernel file
i also tried with virtual_memory turned on and off.
no unusual big memory space is taken, no big cpu usage...
GUI works fine. When i seek forward and play starting from just before KDL (more or less, because it's not always the same time - sometimes 6 minutes 50, sometimes 7,20, etc..) it plays further.
in KDL i get:
"Panic ** error cache can't allocate data memory
(i didn't have such problem with early 4.x - only than it crashed much more ;)

Well, after doing a full backup, reformat, and re-install... the problem was still there. So after a bit of trial an error with my test partition (basically deleting stuff in ~/config/settings until VLC worked again), I found the culprit: a file named "vlcrc".
So if anyone else is having weird, unexplained problems with VLC, try doing a query for vlcrc and nuking 'im/move it to a different location.

VLC has no reason to crash your system, your BeOS install probably does something wrong when it is asked for many resources. I had a similar problem once, I solved it thanks to the "A fix for too much RAM" tip at betips.net.
