Sharing Mail, BeOS and Linux

What's a good email program for Linux (Freespire) that I can use to access my BeMail folders. I have the folders in a shared FAT32 partition.

MDR not deleting on IMAP server
 By Pete G. - Posted on June 30, 2008 - 23:19:39   (#22876)
Current version when comment was posted: 3.0.2
I am new to IMAP (losing my long time direct *nix mail, so I set up MDR on my home machine). Everything seems to work except that if I move a received mail to Trash -- or anywhere else in the INBOX hierarchy -- it does not seem to tell the server that it should be deleted (or moved to the appropriate folder)! (I have a shell account on the server as well, so I can see the message still sitting in the ..../cur directory. It is not even marked as trashed.) I have the relevant box checked in the preferences of course.

Using (command-line) mutt from my lab linux machine to access the same INBOX works perfectly.

Any clues?

I think if you search for e-mails with a status of 'Error' then delete completely the one that's causing the problem (empty the trash too) it should work.

Thanks for trying to help, AlienSoldier...actually, I didn't have the port numbers in there, but I tried just now with them in, and no dice. 21.5/31.7kb get sent and then it pauses for about 30 seconds before erroring out. I'm just trying to send a small attachment. Zip or doc doesn't seem to make a difference. I've sent other things with attachments through gmail no problem. And I'm sure it's gmx smtp, since that's the only outgoing account I have in there right now.

Are you sure that these GMail settings work? I've tried practically everything, even the parameters GMail says to work, but I couldn't connect to my GMail. I've set up GMail POP properly. In the next hours I'll try what you've said, AlienSoldier...

I'm using the newest Mail Daemon (3.0.3), just updated.

the only thing that seem to not work with it is when i try to send myself an email (from the original adress). The email reach the "web interface" but MDR never retreive that one. Kinda treat it like altready retreived or something.

Other than than i can send "others" :) and receive fine with GMail.

Somehow I was just now able to send the 4 e-mails that had not been sending these past few days (despite others sending fine) by chopping the name out of the To: field and just leaving the address. For one of them I had to do that and also cut out a bunch of reply history before it would send. Go figure. Yet other longer e-mails and ones to the very same addresses were sent without problem...

SF.net has an SSL/TLS version
 By Kevin_Field - Posted on October 24, 2006 - 04:27:35   (#20811)
Current version when comment was posted: 3.0.2
I've been using this one:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/bemaildaemon/mail_daemon_v3.0.3_ssl_x86.zip?download

(There's a BONE version too if you poke around the project page.)

And it *does* actually work more than half the time. It's just seemingly randomly it gets stuck on a few e-mails for no reason. Maybe I'll try to look for a pattern...

gmx SMTP problems
 By Kevin_Field - Posted on October 23, 2006 - 16:12:01   (#20808)
Current version when comment was posted: 3.0.2
Is anyone else having this screwy issue of some e-mails going through fine and others gettings stuck for hours or days in that whenever they go to be sent, they get partially sent, and then all the log shows is some generic error like the following, and they don't actually go through (or the progress bar goes to the end, and it actually does send, but it errors, so when it stops erroring the receipient gets many copies):

[my address]@gmail.com: An error occurred while sending the message Re: to <[also censored due to spambots]>:
354 Go ahead

[Mon Oct 23 10:04:50 2006]

It's really inconsistent. Unfortunately, I can't get Bell's ESMTP to work at all, ever, so gmx is the only way I can send mail, and only sometimes. And now they've started this "On Behalf Of" stuff and people are picking up the new gmail address rather than it just being an SMTP server I could leech off of...*sigh*, maybe I should just switch back to Rogers Cable. Unless anyone has hints on Bell, which would be wonderful...(it works from my roommate's Outlook...)

Connection settings not showing in E-mail prefs

I'm running 5.0.3 w/BONE, and installed the zeta/bone version of MDR, and I'm not getting any connection settings displayed in the preferences.

I tried installing the R5/net_server version instead, and all the connection settings (except for SSL) show up fine.

It worked fine before I accidentally broke my beos install and had to start over...

Missing Library?

Hi!

Trying to install 3.0.2 on a dano system. I cannot configure POP3 and SMTP items (username and password fields are missing).

When I instruct MDR to check for mail anyway, it says in a box:
Error loading the mail addon /boot/home/config/add-ons/mail_deamon/inbound_protocols/POP3 from chain test: Missing library (date).

What's the problem? Anyone know?

Thanks!

Rudolf.

Solution for BMessages...

.. muscle::message seemes to be working oki within our application. Loading/Saving from zeta to r5 workes fine. The transition from BMessage to muscle messages is very easy and not that time consuming. Would be nice if we had a simple built in BMessage<>XML wrapper/parser though.

Since Dano, the format of BMessages on disk changed, so you can not use the same settings if you move to R5 to Dano/Zeta.

Do any of you know of a solution to this problem?

an example: if you want to delete all mails that don't contain the word "beos" in their subject, you can set this expression :

probably it isn't the most elegant way, but it works

Using the Match Header filter, is there a way to perform an action if something is NOT found in the specified header field?

Also it says you can use regular expressions but the example looks like a glob style pattern.

notes on compiling MDR from source ...
 By mmadia - Posted on December 9, 2005 - 03:26:31   (#18551)
Current version when comment was posted: 3.0.2
Here are my notes for compiling Haiku's Mail Daemon Replacement (MDR) from source.

1. install OpenSSL from bebits
http://bebits.com/app/1020
net_server: LibPak_libopenssl_dev.zip
bone: openssl097d.pkg.zip

navigate to /boot/home/config/lib/ and:
* make a symlink of libssl.so.0.9.7 to libssl.so
* make a symlink of libcrypto.so.0.9.7 to libcrypto.so
* make a symlink of libcrypto.so.0.9.7 to /boot/develop/lib/x86/libcrypto.so
* make a symlink of libssl.so.0.9.7 to /boot/develop/lib/x86/libssl.so
* make a symlink of /boot/home/config/include/openssl (the folder) to /boot/develop/headers/openssl

NOTE: *.0.9.7 applies to the BONE version.
However, both versions need the /boot/develop/.... symlinks to be created

2.get Haiku's trunk from svn.
http://www.haiku-os.org/wiki/index.php?title=Getting_Haiku

Open trunk/src/kits/mail/Jamfile,
scroll down to $(SELECT_UNAME_ETC_LIB)
place a "#" at the beggining of its line to comment it out.

3. pop open Terminal,
cd to trunk/
export USESSL=1
./configure --target=bone OR --target=r5
jam haiku-maildaemon-cvs

The binaries will be placed in trunk/generated/packages/ ... /release/haiku-maildaemon-cvs/

With the help of MYOB and AGMS, an un-official in-between release of MDR is available and is available at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=26926&package_id=18611&release_id=376935

There are builds for net_server and BONE.
Both of which support SSL, which allows Gmail accounts to be used.

Be sure to read the notes: http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=376935&group_id=26926

Empty envelope? Sounds like the mail message contents didn't get uploaded to the server. Can you check your outbox and open the failed message in BeIDE (or some other text editor) and see if there is a header section, followed by a blank line and then your message text.

If that's fine then there's some problem with uploading messages. Check the account settings - is it expecting ESMTP (Encrypted Simple Mail Transport Prototcol) or SMTP or are you doing IMAP? Can you try switching between IMAP and SMTP, if your service provider has both?

Added the application/x-vnd.Be.URL.mailto file type to BeMail, so now opening a mailto: link in NetPositive only opens one BeMail window, rather than two! It's in version 3.0.3, not released yet, but obtainable via Haiku SVN.

BeMail should have the type 'application/x-vnd.Be.URL.mailto' set by default, so it can be easily set to open on 'mailto:'-links from browsers and others.

It would be really helpful to be able to use spam filter, and gmail, and auto-start again.Hope the guys can put some time into this soon.
