liblayout.so?

How about Marco's liblayout.so? I'm not programer, but my understanding is that libary fixes that problem. Also, I like those "angled" tabs in Preferences dialogs more then BeOS' original rounded ones.

Font Sensitivity
 By Jack Burton - Posted on February 25, 2003 - 13:48:35   (#6066)

Yes, it's sorta hard.
Why? Because BeOS doesn't have a layout engine, so every app has to do the calculations to correctly handle the different font settings. If BeOS had a layout engine (as Windows and many other OSs have), the developer would have a much easier life :=)

My bigest problem with MDR is font sensitivity (sp?).
If system font size is anything bigger then 12, you can't see all options in Preferences panel.
That is also case for large number of apps. Is it too hard to implement font sensitivity?

The AGMS Bayesian Spam detector configuration window is a bit messy, thinking from an user perspective.
For example, the popup menu which let the user select the algorythm to be used in detecting spam doesn't even fit on my screen (800x600), so I can't read the full description. A better approach would be to just put there the name of the algorythm, and put its description elsewhere (maybe with a "help" button).

IMAP support
 By echpiel - Posted on February 24, 2003 - 10:55:14   (#6050)
Current version when comment was posted: 2.0.0 Beta 9
I am afraid that IMAP support is not very good. The problems that I have found so far:

1. The most important one (I think that most of the other problems derive from this one): when IMAP is used, you should see the *remote* folders, not a local folder. For speed purposes, headers and messages can be cached locally, but that's all. So there is no need to provide a local folder for input in the configuration dialog. A remote input folder could be provided in order to get the mail client to work with all the IMAP servers.

2. The messages should always remain in the server unless they are moved to a local folder. This is a consecuence of the previous one. The way the MDR misbehaves now makes my messages dissappear from the server if I read them using the email client, so I cannot read email using BeOS.

3. The messages should remain in the server even if they are deleted. They will be marked as deleted, but will not be moved anywhere. Then, if the messages are purged, they should dessappear totally.

4. An IMAP server can have lots of folders. This is related to the first issue---you navigate through the IMAP server structure when connected, no through local folders. Only one is the input one and the one that must be checked for new email, but there can be a lot more.

For now, it's enough. The most important thins is to keep in mind the design problem of local/remote folders, and the rest of the things will fall in place naturally.

Keep the good work, please, and make us users of IMAP happy if you can. Karma will be rewarded :-)

It's not a server problem since I just use one email account, and I can use Scooby to send the problematic mails.

Another thing that happened was that even though I deleted the 'error' status mails, and emptied the trash, when I clicked on 'Today's E-mails', they were still listed and I could even open them!

The problem seems to be intermittent and also happened with a fresh email (not a reply-to one) yesterday. I'll send you a zipped copy when next it occurs.

New File Name Format for E-Mails

Possibly sending to a non-existant e-mail server, if you have multiple accounts set up? Try opening that offending e-mail in your outbox and forward it or resend it. If it still causes problems, zip up the e-mail file from the outbox and send it to zoidberg@bug-br.org.br Delete the offending email when you're done, otherwise MDR will keep on trying to resend it (because it has an attribute that marks it as unsent).

> Concurrently, in the name column of the tracker out folder, I'm getting a date and time indication like this: 20030214150721

Unrelated to the sending problem. The file format was changed to have fewer annoying characters (like less-than signs and quote marks). It is now the subject (stripped of RE: and other redundant markers), followed by the date and time (which can be wrong if the sender's clock or time zone is wrong), followed by the name, just the name, of the person it is from. Sometimes a random number will follow all that stuff if there would be a problem with duplicate file names.

All of a sudden, when I try to send a reply-to email, the status window appears for a long time, and then I get an error message (but with no details); the mail is not sent. This doesn't happen when I write and send a new mail.

Concurrently, in the name column of the tracker out folder, I'm getting a date and time indication like this: 20030214150721

- which wasn't there before. Are the two linked?

BTW, thanks for the response to my previous question re drafts.

Pause delivery

How about a "Pause" toggle in the Deskbar icon?

When my ADSL connection goes down I have to quit MDR
(to avoid getting gazillions of MDR error messages)
and then relaunch it via opening & saving the prefs.

A pause toggle would help, or a way to suppress the
error messages.

Btw, when deleting a message in Tracker that you're currently
reading in MDR BeMail, and then trying to Alt-T it from within
BeMail, you get an IMO needless & interruptive error message.

Due to some communication problems, we forgot to mention in the version description that the new Japanese version of MDR is still being translated by a few generous volunteers, so you'll find several unfinished spots. This is just a preliminary version to give you an idea of what it will be like. However, the code for Japanese language support is finished, except for the usual bugs :-).

Drafts or No Drafts?

kericu wrote:
> I'm relatively new to this, so maybe the answer is obvious, but how do I send several draft mails in one batch?

Normally you only use Drafts for messages which you are still editing. It's a way of saving your work between sessions (powering off the computer). Presumably you'll edit the draft message at a later time and then send it. It's a feature not normally used when composing ordinary messages and Sending them, so don't use it, just hit Send.

If you want to have messages in your outbox not be sent immediately, turn off the Auto-Start Mail Daemon option in the e-mail preferences and Quit the mail daemon if it is running (right click on the mailbox icon in the deskbar and pick Quit from its menu).

Then when it you hit the Send button after composing a message, it will ask you if you want to start the mail daemon. Just say No until you want to actually send them. The unsent messages will accumulate in your /boot/mail/out directory. Then the next time the mail daemon is running, and it checks for mail, it will also send all the waiting messages.

At least, that's how I think it works. I have an always-on connection and leave the mail daemon running so it sends the messages immediately after hitting the Send button.

There's also the "Queue outgoing mail when PPP is inactive" option in the e-mail preferences, if you're using dial-up Internet access.

Sending multiple drafts?

I'm relatively new to this, so maybe the answer is obvious, but how do I send several draft mails in one batch? Currently, if I save several outgoing mails because I'm working offline, and want to send them all when I go online, I have to open every draft individually, which seems a bit clunky!

Thanks.

New Mail Indicator and Reading Mail

Usually I open the "in" mail folder (click on the deskbar mailbox icon or use Tracker to find /boot/home/mail/in) and double click on the e-mail file I want to read (adjust the Tracker window to show the e-mail subjects etc). Leave the "in" directory window open. Then use the Next and Previous buttons in the mail reader to move between messages. Every time you move to a new message (or when you close the message display window), it will mark the message you had been reading as "read".

When all of the new messages have been read, the mailbox icon in the deskbar should go back to being closed, showing there is no new mail. However, due to bugs with queries across different disk drives (happens if you store mail on different partitions), problems with new mail being counted in the trash (empty the trash), and BFS bugs with queries where the attributes are stored outside the file (mostly fixable if you reformat your BeOS partition with 2K block size - which also speeds up mail related things), it will often report that you have new mail when you don't. To get the correct count, right click on the mailbox in the deskbar and pick Quit. Then restart the mail daemon by using the E-mail preferences and hitting Save (assuming you also have auto-start mail daemon turned on).

i like MDR. i think MDR is good program..
so i hope to improve korean support as korea users

1. add content-transfer-encoding selection in bemail preference
: i want to select 8bit encoding, when i send korean plan/text mail. because it is small file size than QP.

2. add "ks_c_5601-1987" charset in mail_util.cpp
: it is not standard korean mail encoding, but someone is used...so i want to add "{"ks_c_5601-1987", B_EUC_KR_CONVERSION}," in mail_util.cpp.

3. convert from no_charset & no_encoding mail to utf-8 (use encoding in bemail preference)
: MDR does not convert no_charset & no_encoding mail, so i can not read filename in tracker and can not read mail with bemail.

sorry, bad english...

It's appreciated! Especially for the Japanese encodings. My girlfriend uses Japanese a lot and I'm trying to learn it. Old Style Filter Script Problems
 By Alexander G M Smith - Posted on January 8, 2003 - 20:54:03   (#5217)
Current version when comment was posted: 2.0 Beta 7
Maybe it's having problems with the file name, since it includes all sorts of annoying characters (spaces, less than, greater than, quote marks) which might confuse the shell running the script.

For example, I got the talkback note in an email in a file named:

[zoidberg][bebits] Talkback: Mail Daemon Replacement: <"BeBits System" <maildude@bebits.com>>1041985554

Or it could be something else that's not working.

Re Filter Problem
 By kericu - Posted on January 8, 2003 - 01:10:04   (#5206)
Current version when comment was posted: 2.0 Beta 7
I might be being silly, but the filter opens an alert box saying: 'You have x new message for (my mail account name)'. And there is just one button with 'OK', which dismisses the alert.

The tip's script however should state who the mail is from, and give a second button with 'Read' as an option, which should open the email directly.

However, this doesn't happen with the R5 Filter in the daemon replacement, and I can't get it to run the script as written in the Betip, so I don't know if the script you're calling is different, or if the Betip script doesn't do what it says it should.

 By BGA - Posted on January 5, 2003 - 14:44:56   (#5164)

Yes, gut I guess you mixed things. What shows the alert is the Filter script:

"Save the script below as /boot/home/config/add-ons/MailDaemon/Filter and
mark it executable with
chmod 755 /boot/home/config/add-ons/MailDaemon/Filter"

Bellow this text in the tip page you find the code of the Filter script. All the R5 Daemon Filter does is call this script passing the name of the email file to it. Nothing more.

Thanks for the tip; I do think that you should explain that the filter notation is case-sensitive in the Read-Me.

I'm still confused by the R5 daemon filter and what it's supposed to do. The link you give in the Read-Me to http://www.betips.net/chunga.php?ID=511 led me to assume that it does what the tip says:

"This script will pop open an alert window specifying who you received e-mail from and
offers two options: To open the e-mail to read, or just "OK" to get rid of the alert box."

Currently, I get an alert box and the only option is the OK dismiss button. However, it would be much more useful if it had a second button ("open mail") which would enable one to instantly go to the new mail (or inbox). Right now, I have to first dismiss the alert box, then go to the Deskbar, then click on the maildaemon, then open the inbox or new mail folder, which is a lot of clicking.

Adding Words to the Spell Check List

Current version when comment was posted: 2.0 Beta 7
tupperduck asked "Is there a way to add my own entries to the spell-checker?"

Yes, there is. BeMail (and other programs too, I suspect) store their words in text files inside /boot/beos/etc/word_dictionary/ in particular user defined words are in the "user" file there.

You can add your own words by right clicking on the unknown word and picking ADD from the pop-up menu. Or you could directly edit those files.

Scientific Notation Spam Ratio Alternatives
 By Alexander G M Smith - Posted on December 21, 2002 - 21:32:41   (#4955)
Current version when comment was posted: 2.0 Beta 7
tupperduck doesn't like the scientific notation displayed for spam ratings. That's understandable. With the current CVS version (beta 8), you can turn on self-training and use the Classification attribute (either "Spam", "Genuine" or 'Uncertain") rather than the numeric values. But then you have to remember to correct its self-made classifications if it gets it wrong (more work on your part).

Alternatively, you can use the Robinson scoring method, which gives numbers more evenly spaced between 0 and 1, so you rarely see scientific notation. This is less decisive (also slightly easier for spam to fool) than the Chi-Squared method, which gives results very close to 0 (thus scientific notation gets used), close to 1, and rarely inbetween (which means it is uncertain). Your choice - nice numbers or decisiveness.
