I've used BONE7a with this version for sometime and hardly a crash that I can remember.

So try first. You might be suprised.

PPC

PPC is a fairly high development priority (I use PPC, so I can guarantee it works well). Also, there will be a new release RSN (as soon as we can get Axel back to work)

As to populating the fields, use the command-line mail_parser tool.

Works great, too!

The PPC version of MDR works really well. There are only minor issues, which I'm sure will be resolved in the next release. I have not compiled the patch for PPC yet. I am 50% chicken to use it, since MDR works well on my system, and 50% curious whether the patch will be added to the MDR project officially. I can hardly stand waiting for the next MDR....

PPC version.

Yes, it does compile under PPC without problems.

Technically, yes. :)

We are still working on it, but we are also involved with other projects that take away our time. Right now the CVS version has lots of fixes when compared to the BeBits version and we are just waiting on some BeMail fixes from Axel to release an updated version.

use .eml from Outlook express

As i spend almost of my time on Be, i wanted to import my outlook mails... A good way is to save outlook messages in a folder (files are *.eml). Copy them on a Befs volume and open them with bemail (mark .eml to be recognize as email thru FileTypes). I modified also bemail to populate the From/To/subject befs attributes when it opens a mail... (source available at http://ljr.free.fr/bemail-patch.zip)

You know, that makes perfect sense. It also means I forgot to make it delete talkback comments when an app is destroyed, which is a bit of a db-bloating bug. Thanks!

guess at why

I think when some one deletes an app the posts are store like this post belones to app 4002 when you delete 4002 you cant see the post anymore. but when a new app is posted now 4002 all the posts to the old 4002 app are given to that app. the dano divx was put up right after I deleted one of my apps & I had posted to say sorry I couldnt handle the dl bandwidth - then poof my post was gone till a few min later till the dano divx was posted - also look on the dano divx for current version its my apps current version!

Drop us (bebits) an e-mail if you notice this again. I have no idea how it could possibly be happening, but if it is, it needs to be looked into, obviously. :-) I made a small change to the posting script, but I don't know how it could have caused any of this. Wierd. I think BeBits is getting too complex with too many automated features and is starting to take on a life of its own.. :-P

the wierdness is REAL!

hmmm - something fishy is going on with the talkback comments - they're frequently getting assigned to the wrong app (see the 'got it working' comment below, amongst others)

just thought I'd mention it, for those who are getting fonfused by the comments :)

how to get back to stage one

MailDaemonReplacement replaces the following files:

/boot/beos/apps/BeMail
/boot/beos/preferences/E-mail
/boot/beos/system/servers/mail_daemon
/boot/beos/system/lib/libmail.so

Additionally, it installs addons to the user addon folder, which you don't need to worry about. (You can delete the "mail_daemon" folder in /boot/home/config/addons, if you absolutely don't want them...)

Replace the files mentioned above with the originals from your CD or, if you chose so at the install of MailDaemonReplacement, from the backup archive it made, which should be in /boot/home/. You can then quit the mail_daemon from the DeskBar menu, and launch the old one in a Terminal type "/boot/beos/system/servers/mail_daemon &", or double click it in the Tracker. That should bring you back to the original mail system.

Regards,
-Stephan

P.S. It would be interesting to know what made you want to switch back.

Hi, I am new in BeOS and I would like to try some other mail flavors around. I have a Mail Daemon Replacement installed, and I would like to know how it can be unistalled. I am a bit worried about trashing all, because of the ad that appears when you install it. How can I return to the BeOS BeMail standard version without creating a mess?.

Fixed BeMail Binary Release
 By Blue Monk - Posted on May 5, 2002 - 05:19:43   (#1302)
Current version when comment was posted: 2.0 Beta 1
The bug in BeMail that crashes it when you fill in the To: field before picking an account hasn't been included in a binary release. If you're interested in such a fix, please go to: http://mdr.frood.org. I've not actually made any changes, just built BeMail from the CVS source (and it works beautifully).

Kudos to the team and keep on truckin'.

Please forgive any incorrect terminology, my understanding of email structure is incomplete.

The following is copied from the raw view of the email I was referring to. What I called the attribute section is that part marked with asterisks. If I delete those parts, The datafile is reported correctly and I can save it.
I may have incorrectly assumed that the original version of BeMail and Mail Daemon were used the create this message. I am awaiting cofirmation of this from the author.

Trouble with Atributeless Attachments

I was recently sent an email using the original BeMail with an attachment that had no attributes. This resulted in an attachment that could not be directly opened or saved. Clicking on it yielded "An error occurred trying to save enclosure". The Enclosure link says <Enclosure: could not handle>. Opening the email with the original version works fine. I had to edit the message and delete the attribute information from the attachment section in order to get the attachment. Am I correct in assuming this to be a problem with BeMail?

filter creation
 By NathanW - Posted on March 3, 2002 - 23:50:18   (#525)
Current version when comment was posted: 2.0 Beta 1
Until we get around to actually documenting this (I'm assuming you are talking about writing MDR filter add-ons, if you're not, look at the Match Header filter), you have two options. The first is to try to figure it out from source code and headers (most of which are well documented). This is not reccomended. The second is to bother us (which is reccomended). Simply drop us an e-mail and we'll be more than happy to help you.

net_server crash and filters.

Well, we fixed the net-server crash we were able to reproduce. This one happened if you tried to reboot after you have received emails at least once. If you found another one, post it to our bug tracking system link in the bebits page).

The "is" in the filter means the header must match the regexp following it. The regexp can be, for example, *bga* with will match any email that has the string bga anywhere in the header used.

Bruno & Co. - Having 2 MDR installs and using 1 while both partitions are mounted seems OK.

PS. with respect to the header filter I want 'contains' rather than 'is.' Would be much more useful. Thanks for your hard work.

Crash on shutdown bug *NOT* fixed
 By misza - Posted on February 28, 2002 - 03:29:00   (#488)
Current version when comment was posted: 2.0 Beta 1
First of all congrats on a wonderful release :^)

However, the crash on shutdown bug still isn't fixed, this is how to reproduce it. You actually have to have the system booted for quite a few hours, use MDR to check email that sort of stuff over that time, then shutdown/reboot to have MDR crash. If you boot into BeOS and then exit straight away it doesn't crash, it just does so after a big uptime. If you want I can send you some debug info typing "sc" in the debug thingy after it crashes.

Yep. It is expected.

You actually do have a new message. It is just that it is in the trash now. We are considering ways to "fix" this.

"New Mail" oddity

I've run into something that's a little annoying and I'm not sure if it's expected bahavior. Typically, I keep my inbox folder open on my desktop. When a new message arrives, it appears in the inbox and little mailbox icon shows a message in it. If I open the email and then delete it, the mailbox shows empty. However, if I just delete the message from my inbox without reading it, I still see a message in the mailbox icon and it says I have 1 new message. I have to right-click on the mailbox icon, view it and delete it there for it to go away. Is this expected bahavior?

I am not sure.

if the two partitions are not mounted at the same time, it is 100% safe. You will have to try it with both partitions mounted... And let me know if it works.

It should work ok, unless you have different versions installed in each partition.
