Very good question.
>Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server requires TLS: smtp.gmail.com (use >authentication)
>Use Authentication: Yes
>Use STARTTLS: Yes (some clients call this SSL)
>Port: 465 or 587
???
Is there a way to configure for outgoing mail?

thanks + regards

i've configured my gmail account to allow POP.
MDR is set as POP3,
Mail Host: pop.gmail.com:995
user: $me@gmail.com
pass: *
Connection Type SSL

How do i configure outgoing?
The only authentication methods are None, ESMTP,and POP3 before SMTP. I've tried using smtp.gmail.com:587 and smtp.gmail.com:465

net_server version?

Supposedly coming soon?

I've just wiped my whole BeOS partition, and it'd be nice to do the upgrade to 3.0.1 now.

Thanks for the work.

Just in case there's anyone still holding off on upgrading, MDR 3.0.1 works fine. All of the problems with 3.0.0 are fixed, AFAIK. Kudos to NathanW et al!

Deskbar images

When I was doing some development on my MSN messenger client, I found when I built it an icon never appeared in the Deskbar. Turned out to be caused by me using an early beta of the Haiku translation kit. I got a newer version from the build factory and it worked fine after that.

Maybe that has something to do with it?

Not tried the new MDR yet, not got a BeOS box right now and waiting until these teething issues are sorted :)

Spam Filter and other Problems
 By NathanW - Posted on December 9, 2004 - 19:33:35   (#15005)
Current version when comment was posted: 3.0.0
The spam filter problems will be fixed shortly in a point release -- there was a slight oversight in one piece of code. The icon problem is still being investigated, as its causes seem to be utterly random. If affected users could e-mail me at nathanw at uchicago dot edu with details about their system configuration (specifically OS version, monitor color depth, installed version of GCC, and Deskbar version (obtainable by running Get Info on Deskbar in /boot/beos/system)), it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Problem with spamfilter
 By pafcu - Posted on December 9, 2004 - 13:49:55   (#15001)

I can't seem to get the spam filter to work correctly. At first I couldn't get it to work at all untill I recreated my account settings(I assume there were still references to the old spam filter in the settings).
Now the filter seems to work correcly on new mail, but if I press "Edit Server Settings" in the filter settings in the E-Mail prefs I get the error saying the program AGMSBayesianSpamServer can't be found, but the program "spamfilter" is launched anyway.
Also, unless "spamfilter" is running(ie. I have clicked on the "Edit Server Settings" button) I can't train spam by pressing the "Spam" button in BeMail(It tells me that it can't launch AGMSBayesianSpamServer).
Clearly there are still references to to old filter stored somewhere, what settings should I delete to remove them?

I do have all the required libs, and all the apps did started (not unresolved syms)... but it seems that the mail_server wasn't exporting the deskbar_item symbol (could be an issue with the compiler?).

Anyway...

The net_server build listed here works OK for me (should have tried it first :-D)

Any plans to add SMTP-TLS? (Gmail says: "530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first").

Missing symbols means that it is not finding the
correct libraries. The most likely cause in this
case is that you do not have haiku libtextencoding.so
installed in /boot/beos/system/lib. Also you should
remove libtextencoding.so from /boot/home/config/lib
if it is there.

Doesn't shows on Deskbar.
 By BiPolar - Posted on December 8, 2004 - 17:10:20   (#14989)
Current version when comment was posted: 3.0.0
After reading the recent posts about this build, I've compiled and installed MDR from Haiku's CVS and...
The mail_daemon starts ok, but it doesn't shows the Deskbar icon (thus rendering it useless).

I've tried different things (even on a different instalation) with no luck but:

Starting mail_daemon from a Terminal window shows:
"Can't add deskbar replicant: Symbol not found"

What's causing that? No idea. Hopefully you'll know better.

FYI, my setup is: R5.0.4 PE, net_server, using 2.95.3-beos-041111.

Bummer :-(, I wanted to test pop+ssl to see if it works with gmail.

no bitmaps on clean install of R5/BONE

I installed the MDR on a fresh R5.00 + BONE 7a system, and it's the same. The Deskbar icon is just grey and BeMail's button bar images are missing too.

The check-mark/email image on the E-mail prefs panel is showing alright though.

MDR 3 Icon/Bitmap problems

Current version when comment was posted: 3.0.0
I can't reproduce any of the bugs mentioned here, nor has anyone with whom I've spoken. If you could e-mail me with more details, that would be great -- I just redownloaded and installed both packages, and all the bitmaps and all the icons are there. As for the right-click bug Jess mentioned, I'm not sure what that is, and have never before heard anything about it. Again, if you could e-mail me with soething more descriptive, that would be great. Thanks, and sorry for the trouble.

Getting worse

Ya all was fine for a bit but now when I open BeMail to compose I not only have missing icons but have chopped text like "ignatur".

Just out of curiosisty, is the "right click the mail box opens the link" thing going to be fixed any time soon. It's really annoying when I right click for "Create an New Message" but instead it opens the link & never gives me the menu. It leaves you fighting for focus at times & having to click 4 or 5 times before you get the menu since it just keeps opening the link.

Bitmaps resources are screwed...
 By Philippe Houdoin - Posted on December 7, 2004 - 17:54:25   (#14981)
Current version when comment was posted: 3.0.0
Seems that the bitmaps in resource are not valid.
Maybe an issue with the 'rc' buildtool.

Howerver, for the braves there you can fix these missing icons by simply copy BBMP resources present in BeMail and mail_daemon from an older MDR release to this release binaries.
Using quickres tool, obviously.

spam addon + Deskbar Icon
 By jonas.kirilla - Posted on December 7, 2004 - 11:10:12   (#14975)
Current version when comment was posted: 3.0.0
Looks like the name of the spam filter add-on has changed. I had to remove the old filter settings for my accounts, as it was still looking for the add-on by the old name of "AGMSBayesianSpamFilter" instead of the current "Spam Filter".

Also, my Deskbar icon is just grey. It's there but it's got no icon. (Deskbar crashed while installing, BTW. Using the purge/overwrite method.)

Just a little feedback. :)

Anyway, great to see it become part of Haiku. Thanks!

/Jonas.

Bryan's installation problem
 By NathanW - Posted on December 7, 2004 - 06:49:11   (#14974)
Current version when comment was posted: 3.0.0
Bryan's problem turned out to be to a copy of libtextencoding.so in /boot/home/config/lib. If you have this problem, you can safely delete the one there, as MDR 3 installs the latest version in your system directory.

Cc Header?

Am I being silly, or is there no way of having a Cc header in the top pane of a received mail window? Unless I choose to show all headers, which is a lot of clutter, I don't know if someone has been Cc'd on the mails I get.

When I start up BeOS and it checks mail, it synchonizes the mailboxes, THEN downloads every mail message again. so instead of having 600 mail messages (the number on the server), my /boot/home/mail/in INBOX folder has 1200 and climbing.

This is with BONE, upgraded from net_server version.

Mails via IMAP-Account not sent
 By Zephyr - Posted on October 28, 2004 - 21:06:21   (#14560)
Current version when comment was posted: 2.3.0
I have the problem that all my Mails I want to send via an IMAP-account do not reach the sender.
Namely I use the IMAP-Service from web.de a german Web-Free-Mail-supplier.
When I create an IMAP-Account I select the Inbound-and-Outbound Frofile. For incoming Mails I select the IMAP protocol and type in my IMAP-Server and my username and password. As the Destination folder I use a folder in /boot/home/mail/ so that MDR can create the folder-structure of my e-mail-account.
For Outgoing mails I use the settings given by my Mail-supplier: SMTP with authentication.
As the destination-folder I am using a folder inside my IMAP-account: the sent folder.
Everything is allright when I am fetching mails. The Mails i have sent appear in both: the local folder and the online folder but never reach the recipient.

Is it a question of using the MDR or something about preferences?

Greetings, Zephyr

"General OS error" when d/l'ing a message...
 By BiPolar - Posted on September 27, 2004 - 16:56:56   (#14266)
Current version when comment was posted: 2.3.0
Hello guys,

This happened to me a couple of times:

I get a "General OS error" when d/l'ing a message that I read by webmail a couple of days before.

After that error, only the header is stored on my HD, and I keep getting the same error until I erase the message from my POP3 server by using the webmail interface.

Don't know if this is MDR's fault, or my POP3 server's fault, but it is annoying enough, so I better report it. My POP3 account is in SoftHome.net, if that makes any difference.

Thanks for your time and work.

BiPolar.

Servers on different ports

We have support for hosts running on nonstandard ports. It's been there since 1.0. Just add :portnumber to the host name, just like you would in a web browser. This works for all protocols.

Re: Suggestions - Attachment Space Saver
 By Alexander G M Smith - Posted on September 26, 2004 - 15:38:14   (#14255)
Current version when comment was posted: 2.3.0
Oddly enough I sometimes do that manually, editing the e-mail as a text file to remove big attachments I don't want cluttering up my archives.

Setting different ports should be easy for someone to do. It just means adding another parameter to the config file and implementing the user interface controls for it. Changing the network code to use a different port number is trivial. It just takes time, which nobody has at the moment.

...for MDR
1-include the possibity to remove attachments from an email (imagine that somone attachs some targa image at 1600*1200 px, surely you want to delete those attachments and eventually save those image in another format) to save your space
2-include the possibility for e-mail preferences to set different ports for incoming and outcoming server.

Re: Crash on Forwarding Messages
 By Alexander G M Smith - Posted on September 4, 2004 - 15:24:09   (#14106)

That's because someone changed the default for the Forward Message button to be Forward With Attachments. However, attachment forwarding blows up when the original message has an HTML version. So, for now, right click on the button and forward without attachments. If you do have files, save them then attach them after doing a forward without attachments.

BeMail crashes with a segment violation when I press the "forward" button. Environment is MDR 2.30 final for BONE. POP3 mail only. OS is Dano 5.1d0 with TrackerNewFS 2.9 Dano.

I've tried reinstalling over the existing MDR install, but have the same issue. Any idea what might be causing it?

In which new version : MDR or OT ?
Case OT does not include YT changes so it's not useful for vanilla beos users....

Q: the MDR cvs is still the on on sourceforge or does it move to haiku cvs ?
