Why Microsoft e-mail servers suck...
 By NathanW - Posted on December 8, 2003 - 18:19:54   (#9911)
Current version when comment was posted: 2.2.5
This problem is because of a bug in Microsoft's server software, which does not correctly implement the IMAP standard. In particular, it doesn't allow partial RFC822 message fetching, as is required by the RFC. While there is little I can do to fix Microsoft's bugs, I will likely put a workaround into the IMAP layer to fix this in the near to middle future.

IMAP problems

hi,

tried the last several versions for use with a MS OUTLOOK WEBACCESS IMAP server, the mail daemon replacement gets the messages, but there seems to be something wrong with the mail headers...The server shows No subject...and BEAM reports an error parsing the header, gives me no subject and mail dates of 1970...what's wrong? I know it did work some time ago(and then I mean something like a half year ago)

regards,

Tim

Thanks very much for this, it really helps a lot.

Note to Decaf - the status window does show a respective log entry (Error while connecting to server...).

Great work!

I like very much this new feature. Is it possible to let the user choose if and when it should show, in the same way as the status window does?

Also, I think that the AGMSBayesianSpamServer should close automatically after the user choose the spam status of an email.

IMAP Message Status

This is mentioned below, but I want to bring it up again: When syncing with the IMAP server messages are not coming in with the same status as on the server, but are being marked as "New" if it's the first time the message has been downloaded to this machine.

It looks like the message status attribute is not being synced with the IMAP flag. I had to go through and mark 4,000 messages as read, not something I particularly wanted to do.

Hey,
is there any way to change the behavior of right clicks on the Deskbar replicant? If I have windows open & over the deskbar I'll click the Deskbar to bring it to front so I can see the mail replicant. Then I go to right click it to go "Create New Message" but instead of getting the dialog it open my mail folder like I had left clicked it. This behavior isn't consistant for the record, but it seems more times then not I'm closing the mail folder Tracker window then writing my messages.

Ah, I see what's happening. SourceForge is automatically redirecting you to the nearest download mirror site, and that site doesn't have the file. And for some reason you don't see the web page that lets you select a different mirror. Perhaps try the US mirror site:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/bemaildaemon/mail_daemon_v2.2.4_x86.zip?use_mirror=umn

Or even more explicitly:

http://umn.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/bemaildaemon/mail_daemon_v2.2.4_x86.zip

'Tis good, the one on the page.

Your link just went to

which gave me the same message, BTW.

Try this one, note the address isn't just sourceforge.net.

If that doesn't work, try getting it from the BeShare system.

It seems to work for me, going to http://sourceforge.net/projects/bemaildaemon/ and then looking in the files section shows the 2.2.4 files (and previous versions too). Maybe your web browser has an old copy of that page, hit the Reload Page button to reload it with the latest one from SourceForge. Or perhaps your ISP has a web proxy caching server (that's out of date) between you and SourceForge?

If that doesn't work, try manually typing it in:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/bemaildaemon/mail_daemon_v2.2.4_x86.zip?download

for the NetServer version, use mail_daemon_v2.2.4_bone_x86.zip?download for the BONE version. Maybe leave off the ?download part if it takes more than a minute for the downloads page to show up (then it will directly download the file, I think).

Try going directly to the SourceForge page at http://sourceforge.net/projects/bemaildaemon/ and look at the Files area. Sometimes it takes a while to start downloading a file since it sometimes draws a screenful of mirror sites in a huge table, that NetPositive takes a while to render.

Re: NathanW (Aaah...) --- That hack was precisely what I was suggesting, it would be handy if it happened automatically, though.

Re: Message status --- I (should be) using the latest version, I re-downloaded and installed it a few days before making the post. I shall check, though. It may be a "feature" of the IMAP server I'm using. I'll see if I can find a IMAP server attached to any other e-mail account and try that to see if it has the same problem, and report back.

Cheers.

We would like to do this. On the other hand, the file system doesn't permit files with duplicate names, and duplicate subjects are very, very common. Hence the <subject randomNumber fromAddress...> format. As a hack, you could add the MAIL:subject attribute to the file type for directories in the FileTypes prefs panel, and then add "subjects" to the directories that match their actual names, thus allowing you to display them. I realize this isn't a perfect solution, but it does work.

Re: IMAP Feature Requests

I'm pretty sure I know what lentinj means, I was thinking the same thing myself. Each message has an filename as well as a subject line. If you have subfolders in your mailbox, you have to display the filename in order to make the folders useful. But that gives you a first column that's full of useless (at least to a human) data except for one or two folder names. The suggestion was to copy the subject attribute of the email into the filename, so the mail folder can be easily read without all the extra data on the screen.

Feature request....

Excellent work, the mailbox root is really handy for my pipex IMAP Server. You've really made the IMAP support useful, but I'd like to request 2 more things :)

1. The Status (Read, New, etc), is sync'd with the mailserver, as opposed to just a message being new if it's the first time it's downloaded---I think that's possible. At the moment, when I first sync to the IMAP server, all 433 messages are new, as opposed to finding out which ones are new from the IMAP server.

2. (This is really tiny) It would be useful if the Subject Attribute==Filename. This is so I can use subject for the main filename, not Filename, which has extra infos other than just subject for e-mails.

Cheers for all your work!

Error Messages

I am plagued with error messages. Apparently my mail servers are not the most stabe/available systems around and so I frequently receive error messages. Annoying ones which pop-up and interrupt my work until they are dismissed. Right now I'm receiving IMAP errors which required about seven boxes to be closed every time it checks.
Could one or more of the following options be considered?:
a) Have the errors sent to a log file, rather than alert windows.
a) Have there be a check box to disable an account rather than remove it entirely.
iv) Be able to set the checking frequency on a per-account basis.

Hi,
I would just like to suggest another cool feature that could be added to the already cool email program. It would be the feature to attach sound to eamils like on the 10-15 year-old NeXT machine's NeXTmail program.
It is really fun.

here is the link to it: http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/4698/nst/page8.htm

Perhaps video also could be considered in the future.

MDR Crash

We're getting rid of BString as fast as we can, although because it's slow, not for the reasons you mentioned. The thread-safety isn't an issue... nor is the UTF8 for that matter, since at that point everything's encoded.

Anyway, the error you're getting is strange. Try deleting your account (in E-mail) and then recreating it. That might help. If not, we'll try to figure out what's causing this. Is there anything else you can tell us about your configuration?

Diver, are you sure that it crashes everytime?
Or maybe only on messages with cyrillic text in some of header fields, like Subject?

It ssems that Dr.Zoidberg uses BString class, which is nor thread, neither UTF-8 safe:
"Currently, BString only supports assignment and retrieval of strings that contain single-byte characters. If you want to
use a BString to store a string that contains multi-byte (UTF8) characters, you have to flatten the string yourself and
adjust the character count arguments accordingly."

I have two mailboxes POP3 and IMAP.

Also i'd like to have Cancel button in the Mail status window and minimal width of this window should caculated by formula ("Fetching mail for" + account_name + "Connectiong to POP3 server").
And i would really love if you'll make key arrows support in the Preferences->Accounts->List_with_Accounts_on_the_left.

I've noticed the same problem. Needs an OS change to fix it, so for now just turn off the blinking lights. Or if you must have them, try Robert Paciorek's serial port RS232 CTS/RTS signal line toggling code that turns on a light plugged into the serial port. Contact him at http://www.bebits.com/devprofile/2771 if you want the modifications.

I think I've fixed this in CVS. Please check it out, and tell me how it works. I did some rudimentary testing, but I, of course, don't have your mail server. You'll need to add a trailing slash: ~/Mail/ or whatever.

No need to apologize.

Nathan, your work on IMAP is amazing. It will make it finally possible for me to use BeMail to do all my normal workaday e-mailing.

So don't apologize. :)

The default setup for the IMAP server on Debian GNU/Linux is to use users home directory as IMAP mail directory. This is due to the lack of standards in where to store a mail store... Some use ~/mail, some use ~/Mail, some use ~/mbox. Argh.
