re: Phoenix?

I tried building Phoenix last week, and it would not compile out of the box :( I have not had a chance to look into it since then.
Plus, drag and drop is not implemented yet in mozilla, which is useful for certain parts of Phoenix.
I would like to look into it again at some time, but for know, I'll probably wait for them to get a little more work done. Though, if someone else wants to work on it, I'd be more than willing to give them a hand, when possible.

Phoenix?

Any chance of Phoenix being ported to BeOS? http://www.mozilla.org/projects/phoenix/

From the site: "Phoenix is a redesign of the Mozilla browser component, similar to Galeon, K-Meleon and Chimera, but written using the XUL user interface language and designed to be cross-platform."

I've played around with it a bit on Windows and it feels a lot faster than regular Mozilla, even at 0.2. It seems like it might be a better fit for BeOS, barring someone writing a native BeAPI UI for Gecko.

I'd take a stab at it myself, but I have no programming experience beyond writing simple Java apps to accept user input and write text to a terminal window.

Bezilla won't run unless you have libdl.so. That's why it runs on some machine and on some it doesn't.
I found it executing the library that Bezilla told me it was missing, and following the dependency chain until I found libdl.

Once you succeed to load Mozilla (maybe with second CPU disabled) - go to Preference->Appearance and disable there tooltips. It should add SMP stability, from other users experience.

And, it would not be very usefull if you could not enter an email address (i.e. the "@" sign). I have never seen this problem, nor is there a bug report for this.

Please, if you have problems, post at bezilla.org in the forum, or, if you feel confident enough, post a bug report at bugzilla.mozilla.org.

Great job doing this very very useful port;

however I noticed that it sometimes behaves strangely
(when I edit a mail the cursor sometimes disappear,
I can's close a message edition window it seems,
it takes more times to load than the Windows or Linux
version on my setup),

but it's very cool however !

Thanks for the post. Yes, the Flash® plugin does work, but, some sites crash while using it. But, not all. I have posted a short articla about this at BeZilla.org. If anyone finds a site with a problem, please post a link in the comments section for that article. Though, the couple sites that have crashed it so far, seem to be crashing in the same place within the bezilla code.

There are other developers that deserve a lot of thanks, besides myself. I just make sure it still builds (bug fixes), provide bezilla.org, thanks to CompleXero (www.xomplexero.com), and provide the builds.

The speed enhancements are due in LARGE part to Daniel Switkin. Sergei Dolgov is working on some of the drawing and widget focus issues. Chris Seawood made SSL possible, along with help from other netwcape developers. And, all of the other developers that worked on BeZilla before I started on the project, like Wade Majors, Makoto Hamanaka, Timeless, and many others, that I never had the pleasure of working with. Plus, all of the users, that have taken the time to post bug reports to BugZilla.

This is a group effort. The support I receive from the BeOS community is one of the things I love about BeOS. Mozilla on BeOS will only get better due to the efforts of everyone.

Umm....

Okay.. I have an issue.

I started mozlla 1.0 on Windows.. and noticed it took longer to startup than BeZilla. This makes me happy. Of course Win32 builds can have Turbo mode enabled, which blows away even IE and Opera.

All this great work by Arougthoper has taken us from being probably the slowest mozilla port to the fastest (load time, non-turbo, conmparison only) or at least prety close. Great work Arougthoper!!

I will tell you how well it works on my Web Pad.. once I figure out how to strip it down to nothing, and get a bigger CF card, and make a new image, and get a real BeOS on it, etc.... ;-) A ways away yet.

Anyway, keep up the good work! I have some ideas in my head that may make BeZilla even better, but I'm going to see if I can make them work before wasting your time ;-)

Its a 32-bit shell for a 16-bit extnsion to an 8-bit OS designed for a 4-bit microprocessor by a 2-bit company that can't stand 1-bit of competition... *DUH*

Thankyou for all the time and effort you have put into bringing mozilla to BeOS.
It must be a huge job. Much appreciated.
Bezilla is indispensable, I can do internet banking in BeOS now with it, as well as view the odd webpage that won't show up in net+.
Keep up the great work :)

It's comparable to the size of Netscape Communicator on other platforms. And don't forget that this is the whole suite, not just the browser. You got your e-mail, newsgroups, even Composer, the WYSIWYG html editor.
Such a deal!

what do you mean by "pure ported"?
This is a full and clean build of the mozilla 1.0 source tree. All of the default extensions are included. Some of the other ports have distros this size as well, so, we are not alone. Hope that answers your question :)

I'm sorry if I came off sounding mad. I get SO MANY comments, that my replies have started to become "automatic" and mechanical. There is a type-o in the readme, though, and I'm glad you pointed that out to me. It is also in the FAQ on bezilla.org.

So, thank you. And thank you everyone, for all of you nice comments!

I am afraid you missunderstood me. The error was mine, not Mozilla's. I don't have any idea about terminals or type-os, excepting a couple of mechanical commands. I have repeat the process and now it goes faster, but I will add some RAM too. I believe it is the best BeOS browser around, so don't get angry, I did not mean it was bad, i mean i am clumsy in BeOS.

1)
The "mozilla/bin" is a type-o. I had copied the text for the README file from:
http://www.bezilla.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=FAQ&file=index&myfaq=yes&id_cat=3&categories=BeZilla+-+Installation

2)
I don't know why it would "freeze" on your first run. Never seen that problem before. If it is too slow for you, I am sorry.

3)
It is a text icon, because it is a shell script that starts the application. If you don't like the icon, it can be changed.

4)
DOM: Document Object Model

5)
I have not tried the flash plugin in a while. Last time I checked, it worked. Make a sym-link from to the FlashPlayer executable in your plugin directory.

6)
Mozilla will not run any faster by just re-installing it. The only way it will run faster is if a) you get a faster machine or more memory or b) more developers start helping out with the project

How can I install it?

I have a little problem. I download this, and after reading the README, I have the impression I have not done it ok. The program is ***GREAT***, but I have the impression that it goes slow for me, because of installation. It says that after placing it wherever you want (I have chose the same folder the author recommends, /boot/apps), bezilla should be run form terminal in the /mozilla/bin folder. But I have not any bin folder. I jusy place it in that folder and from terminal, I typed "mozilla", and it installed, and freezed. After rebooting it works great, but slow, and I believe it is because I have not installed it properly. When I wanna surf, I open mozilla by clicking not the lizard blue icon (in hungs then) but a "mozilla" text icon next to it, which it is not very common, open a program by clicking a text icon. What should I do?. Appart form that, what is DOM?. I bought the macromedia flash player for BeOS, and it works perfect for netpositive and opera. Can I install it on Mozilla?. How?
