I just installed John the ripper like some one told me how and I get a err.
[root@local run]# unshadow /etc/passwd /etc/shadow > passwd.txt
bash: unshadow: command not found
[root@localhost run]#
Im running Redhat 8.0

$tar xzf john-1.6.tar.gz
$cd john-1.6
$cd src
$make linux-x86-any-elf
Than as root cd to the /john-1.6/run dir
run$unshadow /etc/passwd /etc/shadow > passwd.txt
run$chmod 600 passwd.txt ( to keep prying eyes out)
$./john passwd.txt
Loaded ? passwords with ? different salts
(Free BSD MD5)-this is the output you'll see and then just wait...Took about 4 minutes to pick out my passwords good luck!!
