yep it's me...i'm still alive!!
every time i hear SoX these days i shudder and cringe. SoX in the business world usually refers to a Sarbanes Oxley audit (hence the SOx ...SoX) where they audit you and find that you need to fix up certain processes and computer security stuff....and it may seem trivial but ultimately it WILL afect your share price if you do not comply.
Painful stuff, so be aware of SoX audits and don't be confused by THIS wonderful BeOS product which has helped so many BeOS audio people.
cheers

Talking to myself (maybe), I did work on adding BeOS audio out to sox some time ago, but it didn't work 100% due to a buffer problem (no 'callback' function in sox). Still, it would be nice to have that IMO.
When my new roommate moves in, I'll work with him on adding SDL mixer output to sox utilizing a ringbuffer function, prove of concept already done. But that won't happen until winter (summer is for outdoor activity) or even next year, depending on time we both have.
Cheers, Ove

Sorry, I have to add that I live in the European union, and you probably know of the software patent issue there. I will NOT compile an mp3'd binary version of sox if the European parliament is unsuccessful in stopping software patents in Europe, as this could mean a legal nightmare for me. Please help stop software patents in Europe. We'll see soon how this turns out...

Ah, just wanted to add, if you need such a version urgently and you can't compile it yourself, drop me a mail and I send it to you per mail. Next release will feature both versions on BeBits, as already mentioned.

About the mp3 and ogg input. I thought it would be good if one has a sox version which requires no additional libraries at all. But I am willing to make two seperate versions for the next release. I will be using mad/lame/vorbis libraries supplied by LibPak for the mp3'd version then.
Please excuse me that I am not doing it now, you have to wait for the next sox release, as I just came from hospital and can't sit well on a chair ATM, so I am spending as little time as I can in front of computers ATM. Ove.

I guess you mean coding sth. like a translator so that all BeOS apps which use translators benefit from it? I like this idea a lot, especially as the core part of sox is already a library (libst.a), which can be statically linked into other programs.
It won't be easy however as sox supports many filetypes/effects, and the translator would need to process realtime. In fact, I'm unsure if it's possible at all since I believe it wouldn't be a translator that is needed but a media writer/extractor ?? Anyone with knowledge about such things cares to comment?
Personally I also like the idea of having real sound output in BeOS for the commandline program sox, like on Linux with Alsa or OSS. I already started to fiddle with that.
Cheers,
Ove
