Hello!
Right now I am downloading the hole lot of Max V4 to extract a version of Abiword. Good to know that that works, but it might be a lot easier with a smaller archive, I recon. Has anyone please an idea where to look for the actual Abiword download for me? Assuming you see from this, that I have no idea how to CVS something or type anything into the Terminal but cd and dir... And I have spent an entire weekend on installing a working system yet..... Pleaese!
Thank you a lot

Hi Jess,
I don't see Abiword is poorly designed at all, IMO it looks need. There are fields to use so it could work with any database for eg mail merge. ( very important)
The whole layout is fine and I think it is a pitty none of the brilliant BeOS programmers has picked it up.
About the open office port:
That should be nice too, agreed, but as far as I know there is still no relational database in there and IMHO that is what everybody need as the most important app. Such a database would work with an updated abiword
oppose to Gobe which has no "Field" option.
So developers please go on with Abiword for BeOS

I'm not sure why there is a big stink over this, there was a versin 1 a long time ago for R5, if I remember correct I had tried version 1.0.something almost 2 years ago. It was never added to Bebits but it existed none the less. The "new" alpha is still busted & useless.
Abiword IMO is poorly designed & I think the community would benifit much more from an Open Office port. The magnatude of the project is irrelivant in the fact if we don't tackle the more comprehensive apps we will never have the functionalizty we need with out booting some other crappy OS.

Hi craftiful,
I'm happy to see someone is picking up Abiword, I wonder what I can do
to stimulate these developers. ( I,m sure these men can read Enlish )
I dowloaded the latest version you mentioned and it simply work, so
I don't know why I need an existing abiword installation.
BTW on the site I can't read or even see the characters, do I need
to install some font in my BeOS to see some of it?
I like to check this site, maybe there is a new version soon.
Abiword seems much more suitable for me then Gobe since there is no way inserting fields in gobe documents.

Yes thats right, someone seems to have started developing abiword for beos again!
i found a link to qube.net a russian beos site, and I found a forum entry called abiword 1.0.1, I know absolutely no russian, but i found a download link, and it was indeed abiword 1.0.1! 3 subsequent builds have been released, called gluckalo-alpha 0, 1, and 2, and I proceeded to download the latest build (alpha 2) and it has these improvements on the former version:
the 'preferences' dialog box now works (this includes spelling preferences, etc) and in this latest release, you can choose the colour of your text! yes, you better believe it! And the program FINALLY has an icon!
As I know no russian, could someone who speaks russian and english please go to this site, and tell us english speakers what's going on.
http://www.qube.ru/forums/item/developer/message/18102/
the link to download the latest release is:
http://www.abiword.nm.ru/gluckalo-alpha2.zip
(note: the zip file only contains the abiword executable, so you will need an existing abiword installation, which you can get from bezip.de)
and here is a screenshot showing the text colour change:
http://www.abiword.nm.ru/gluckalo.jpg
I myself have no involvment in the development of abiword for beos, but as an ardent beos user, i thought it my duty to inform my fellow beos users of what i found out!
Here's hoping for more releases of abiword for beos!

Hi there folks,
I want to point your attention to bezip.de - a great German Be-site - who have abiword 1.0 available for download. For quite a long time already.
Other funny thing: the abiwordsite has been showing screenshots of the Be-version. Although not available for download...

I inquired about AbiWord 1.0. AbiSource says that they have not released a 1.0 version for BeOS because the lack of developers had halted that project. If the folks who revised and published AbiWord 1.0 for BeOS would contact AbiSource I am sure the confusion and delusion of the masses can be resolved. I am all for open source, code like crazy, BE true to the source, but also BE responsible.

If this known bug means abiword crashes whenever clicking on preferences, then it is a new bug.
Because this bug did not exist in the version that I get from the following link:
http://www.computeradministrator.com/
but unfortunately it seems the link has broken.
May be you want to look at their sources.

Hi there, fans of Abiword!
Though I think BeBits is a great site, they are one step behind on a latest version of Abiword. bezip.de features Abiword 1.0! I thought it would be good to let you all know! By the way, www.abisource.com features screenshots of Abiword for the BeOS, though they don't offer it for download. I asked the webmaster about it and he did not really give me a satisfying answer why there is no such download.
Nonetheless, abiword works great on our BeOS.
