If you install BeOS to a seperate partition, you can install a boot manager (BeOS comes with one - Bootman) that will display a menu when you turn your computer on so you can choose which OS to start.
You can install BeOS by itself, but you will have to burn the image file to a CD and get a bootable floppy. Make sure you don't select a partition with anything on it in the BeOS installer as that partition will be wiped. You can use something like BootItNG (www.bootitng.com) or partition magic to resize your existing partitions and create a new one for BeOS.
Also, a word of warning: Opera for BeOS is no longer updated, the version we have is way back at 3.something. We have firefox as a modern browser, but it will be very slow on that hardware. BeOS comes with a simple browser, NetPositive, but that is really out of date and not a lot of use for the modern web.

Before I start this... Is there a way after the reboot, that you see a menu between you can choose if you want to start in Windows or in BeOS?
And another question... Is there an Option that I can install BeOS on a system without any windows installed? That the system uses BeOS entirely as it's primal operating system?
Thank you

Hi.. After a while searching for a smart and fast OS, BeOs took my complete attention. First I wanted to implement PalmOS on a heavier machine like a desktop or laptop system. But This is better and approved by thousands of users.
Okay. A system like P133 with 32 mb RAM and a HD of 1,6 Gb, no Soundcard and just a videocard of 1 mb and a modem for cable/ADSL.
My project, to run BeOS on this tiny simple system for usage ONLY for internet-surfing, no media stuff... I think I need to use Opera for this... Specially bought this system for this project, what if I turn it into rubbish after installation??
A few years ago I installed a previous BeOS on my (still present system) laptop and all went BAD to WORSE... After installation, the system was so useless... No efficiency whatshowever... Had to format everything because after deinstallation Windows didn't worked anymore....
I hope this version is better, but I won't make the same mistake again... Later my report about this project.. Sorry of my language here, I am not english... Bye

You can have BeOS installed anywhere, another hard drive will be fine. At one point I had a image file at C:\BeOS\image.be (on a FAT16 partition) and one on D:\BeOS\image.be (on a FAT32 partition) - holding space at the BeOS boot screen let me select which one I wanted.
If you want to go the whole way, you can make the drive BFS and install BeOS on it properly. You'll need a bootable CD for that though (look at Max or Developer's Edition).
Your other option is to resize your windows partition and add a BFS or FAT 32 partition on the same drive. You can use tools like Partition Magic or BootItNG www.bootitng.com to do that.

if your computer is an AMD processor over 1GHz, then that is your problem. Using a hex editor, open the file "boot/beos/system/kernel_intel". Search for the string "GenuineIntel". The first two occurances of this string that you find, change them to read "AuthenticAMD" (without the quotes, on both of those). Save the file and restart, it should boot normally. If you're running this through an emulator it may be more difficult, but you should be able to open the file image.be in a hex editor and search for "GenuineIntel". This may be a bit tricky because the file is much bigger, but as long as you make a backup copy of image.be before you start, try replacing those values and see if that changes anything.
Also, if you have over 1GB of RAM, a patch is needed in order for BeOS to boot. Bochs may very well require some special procedure to run BeOS, but try the steps above (if you have an AMD processor) and see if that helps.

If the compressed files on the disk wont expand they could have crc errors in them. This might happen when the Beos MaxEdition was been downloaded or when the disk was burned with a CD writer. I think it is possible to get an MD5 file from the download site and see if you can get an MD5 application (assuming you downloaded in windows) for windows to generate the MD5 number from the download, then see if it matches the other MD5 downloaded number.
If that is OK then it might be a disk write problem. Use the CD writer application to check the disk surface for errors. I know Nero can do this in windows.
If you had another version of Beos on another drive or someone elses computer you could find the zipped files in tracker and try to manualy expand them into a temporary folder. Expander would tell you if they were corrupted.

hey guys, couple questions. First, I have an Athlon system running a 1600 proc, an L7S7A2 socket A Mainboard, like 256 Mb Memory, and installed a new hard drive with a Gig on it just for BeOS. Had to put on a serial mouse, but that's ok. My main problem is, the install program copies everything to the hard drive, but then when it goes to expand everything, it just stops. Nothing happens. Also, it will not format the new hard drive, only mount it or initialize it. I have tried several times to install with no success. I have no idea why the files won't expand. Can anyone help?

If Beos was installed as a fixed 512mb image partition within Windows and the amount of RAM was above a certain size there would not be enough space for a swapfile. One solution would be to use a nondestructive partition resizing application to create extra free space and reduce the windows partitiopn. From Beo use the Install application to initialize or format the free space and install to it. Uninstall Beos from windows after a successfull install to reclaim some of the lost space back.

I was able to install BeOs PE and all of my drivers without any problems.
But I'm puzzled that the installer didn't recognize that I had more than enough hard disk space (30G) for swap space.
I installed from my windows hard disk which has a single primary partition. My other hard disk has linux, and a I dual-boot with LILO.

You can permanently disable BIOS calls by placing a settings file in /boot/home/config/settings/kernel/drivers/. Look into the 'samples' subdirectory there, the sample files contain instructions.
Personally I'd recommend using PrimalToys <http://www.bebits.com/app/1529>, which allows to adjust these settings via a GUI.

Is there a way to use the fail safe feature "do no call bios" in one of the boot scripts? so that I don't have to call the function manually(it's a chore sometimes and If I don't if get a system lock.)Myabe a way to toy with the "call bios" operation to keep it from locking.

What is the big deal? those companies abandoned BeOS, the realplayer was outdated when I bought R5, they never made an update, same goes for Gobe and personalStudio no support no updates nothing.
They shouldn't complain if some people "share" this things.

Have you tried disabling plug n play in the BIOS? and is Beos installed in windows as you say it is on a fat partition?
If it is installed in windows, sometimes Beos wont boot properly if booting from the windows deskop or restarting booting from Beos bootloader or floppy. Have you tried shutting down you're computer for about 1 minute before booting into Beos. The device settings from windows can still be retained in RAM memory which confuses Beos.

Sorry, -about checking no calls to bios in the safe mode list or checking everyting and unchecking one at a time with each reboot, that applies to hobo fuzz.
With Brink, try fail safe mode, this means everything else in the list is also selected even if not checked. If it boots then check everthing else in the list except unchecking each one at every reboot untill it stops booting also and let me know.

I don't think the AMD K processors have the sse instruction so the patch will not make any difference here. When you boot beos have you tried pressing the space bar, before the icons start lighting and choosing failsafe mode? Will it boot then? IF it boots then you could try just choosing no calls to bios in the failsafe list and see if it still boots. Otherwise leave everything checked in the list unchecking next one down untill it wont boot and let me know what it was.

If you have a unsupported AMD processor (like Athlon XP / MP / Duron) the BeOS-Kernel needs to be patched to work properly.
There are several ways to circumvent this problem:
1. If you downloaded the (quite outdated) 5 PE, you can use the kernel patcher from within windows (http://www.bebits.com/app/3390).
2. You can also download a newer distribution of the BeOS Personal Edition: BeOS Max Edition v 3.0 (this is the most up to date one: http://www.bebits.com/app/3148) or the BeOS Developer Edition 1.1 (a bit older: http://www.bebits.com/app/3173).
3. If your BIOS supports it, you could also disable the SSE on your processor. This is the least desireable option because you loose performance. Use one of the above ways instead.

If you have got one of these processors then the kernel of Beos personal edition wont allow it to boot. This is because it cannot recognize the processor SSE instruction. If you have a computer BIOS that you can disable this SSE instruction, then it might or probably will boot.
