The BeOS rocks, it is one of the smallest, most robust, most stable OS's out there...MS and Linux keep getting bigger and Be got smaller- small enough for a download. Love it.

The problem at the second icon could be a RAM problem (too much of it). How much RAM do you have in your machine? If you have over 512 you could try to remove some of it and see if it boots then.
The problem at the end of the boot up could be related to many things ;). Try to cold start your system with the BeOS boot-floppy (if not done so allready). And try to boot with fail save graphics.
To both: If you hit space at the very beginning of the boot sequnece (when the bootloader loads from the floppy for example) you will get to a boot menu. Make sure it finds anything to boot into at all (the bootloader seems to be unable to find the PE image on some WinXP partitions). Then play arround with the save mode options (fail save graphics for example). If you enable console logging you will be able to see where it hangs.
Also take a look at http://wiki.bebits.com/page/NewbieInfo for more resources to get you started.

Similar problem as below, only for me it freezes when all seven startup icons are lit. I have no idea where to begin...
I'm running a Celeron 500MHz with Win2k, with the following things plugged into it:
NVidia GeForce 4MX 420 (PCI - no AGP on my mobo :P )
Creative SBLive! MP3+
Linksys Ether 16 LAN card
I noticed the LAN card isn't functioning properly under Win2k (recently upgraded from Win98SE, haven't worked out all the kinks yet), but that doesn't seem like something that would freeze the OS.

I am very new to Beos. I have an AMD1800, Ecs brd,512 DDR,XP installed on one H/D + Win98 on another, Both in cradles.
I have read a lot of letters re-Installation of PE. I initially loaded PE onto the Xp H/D and it worked. I then wiped it off and reinstalled onto a seperate Partition, it loaded on Ok but wouldn't boot,Said it couldn't find a Beos bootloader.
I then loaded it onto the Win98 H/D and everything is perfect.
I would like to know if anyone can tell me why on the XP H/D it cannot find the bootloader?

Too bad the patch does not work.
I have patched it for an AMD Duron, and I have the same problem.
And when trying to patch an image in an Intel processor machine, the string was not found.
The worst is that I have to re-download again the BeOS Max 223 MB because the previous download file was corrupt. Entire nights wasted...

If you don't want to use Max edition (I hear it can be buggy) you can use a hex editor to change a line in the kernel in order to get it to boot. I have a duron as well and ran into the same problem you did. Look on the wiki pages here on BeBits or ask around on BeShare/Ozone for details on how to do that. Hope you get BeOS running!

Hey, thanks for the quick replies.
I have an AMD Duron, but I see that it has the SSE technology.
I will try with BeOS Max Edition, (as long as I don't have to pay for that!), because I don't think the SSE instructions can be disabled in my BIOS.
Thanks again.

I'm not sure what you are installing BeOS 5 PE from. However, the released version is a Windows setup that installs a 500MB "image" file of BeOS 5.0 PE.
If you have an NT or later version of Windows, you have to use the "boot floppy" to lanch the BeOS 5 PE "image" file. If you have Win98 or earlier ( dos based windows ), you can run the "Launch BeOS" program.
Essentially, this version lets you try BeOS without having to re-partition your hard drive.
Hope this helps...

Yes. BeOS is not Windows.
>- Both of them can boot the PC, but after a while showing the BeOS startup logo, the PC automatically reboots.
You have an AthlonXP. BeOS 5.x won't run on most Pentium4s and AthlonXPs. You will need to either:
1. Download "BeOS Max Edition" which supports the AthlonXP or,
2. Check your BIOS and try to find if it has an option to disable SSE. If yes, disable it, and voila, BeOS 5 will now boot.

This happened with both boot floppy and boot CD:
- None of them are readable by Windows. Is this normal?
- Both of them can boot the PC, but after a while showing the BeOS startup logo, the PC automatically reboots.
About the 5.0.1 and 5.0.3 updates, I wonder how do I install them if they are 2 files without extension. And the 5.0.3 file has the very annoying detail of an invalid character in its name (>). At least is invalid for Windows, but this is supposed to be installed on a Windows OS, isn't it?
- Please help. I really want to give a try to BeOS despite all the errors I found already, and I know I'll find more, but I want to avoid them when possible.

Sometimes it seems that the excitement about BeOS is fading, but there are many BeOS users relying on BeOS for everyday work. I just finished some web sites, a booklet for an art show, and all kinds of research on the web, debugging some Java code for a high energy physics experiment (no AWT/Swing involved), etc etc. I find only a very few things I can't do, yet they all have workarounds. I can't burn CDs but that's due to this computer's CD drive, and I can't get pictures from my USB digital camera, which acts as a mass storage device. I have a minimal linux installation on a small partition just for unloading the camera. Rarely, I send files to a windows machine for printing - I don't do much color printing, but I do know that color printers compatible with BeOS exist. Someday I'll buy one, but it's low priority for now. The only one of these drawbacks that affects my everyday work is the lack of a current, reliable USB mass storage device driver. If my life were less hectic, I'd write one myself. (Anyone who can help me de-hect my life will be my hero! ;-)

I've just been through two weeks of 'toil and trouble' trying to get BeOS 5 running on my 1.4 GHz Athlon. After a VERY long story, involving kernel panics (and user panics) and much fruitless patching, eventually the problem turned outto be thus:
My machine was built using a Gigabyte GA-7IXEH motherboard which uses a VIA chipset. Eventually, after ALL else had failed, I replaced this with a GA-7IXE4 which has an AMD chipset and BeOS worked. I got plenty of suggestions about recucing the 768 Mb memory in my machine, or swapping the Matrox graphics card for somethng crap. Even replaacement IDE driver was tried. The motherboard swap was done, not in anticipation of success, but to prove that absolutely NOTHING would make BeOS work on this machine. Literally EVERYTHING else had been swapped and had new drivers installed. Okay, everything is not perfect just yet - the Matrox driver seems quite 'experimental' and I've heard nothing from the SB Audigy, but what I've seen so far shows massive promise. Everything is so sensible and straightforward, totally unlike my first experiences with Windoze over a decade ago. What is desp[erately needed is a decent manual which will decode the various error messages BeOS can come out with - this would have shortened the time this excercise took to around a day, I'm sure. Lots of things left to configure, software to load, settings to set and a PC-less family to placate, but at least the basics are working now. Just thought people deserved to know: BeOS + VIA = trouble.

The link you refer to is this: http://www.betips.net/chunga.php?ID=510 - it was working this morning.
If you've got a spare HD/partition lying around, the easiest way is to install PE to that. The installer application will simply copy your image to the partition.
I'm using a 1gig image, but had to use a strange combination of techniques to get it working, and my method only worked because I had 2 FAT32 partitions. If you're interestred, my method is here: http://forums.begroovy.com/showthread.php?s=9ab1c909db00ff41d7193f2e6b37dabe&threadid=3757

ok it's not that hard just take a deep breath& go slow. No rush, so if Be see's the drives as "no name" then if you do anythign in bash thats what you type. Or rename them in Be. You say your drives where named "disk1_vol1, disk1_vol2" so your ok. If have have specific stages in the process you don't understand you can get ahold of me & I can try to walk you through them. I use my normal name on BeShare but I'm not there much now a days. but you can add me via aim as I use jabber d34thsh3d is my name other then that you can email me at jet@beosjournal.org - I did that guide for a few resons but for all the people that read it & go man that's WAY too complicated when cuold do a SUPER simple install cd. Sure ya could, but when if you hand it out? Wouldn't it be nice to show buddies & any one curious how 1337 Be is? People that have dealt with linux & Windows for years try out my Be installs & step back with a "holy crap" look on their faces. They can't figure out why it's so easy & well organized. The added software has a description of what it is & the install fly's by with no stupid prompts nags serials or crashes. Every one learns differant & so maybe if I walk you through this your perspective on problem areas in the guide can be added & improve it's ease of use to more people so any one willing to put in the time acn make a install cd worthy of artistic notation. ;) Life is poetry, that's why we groan so much! Jess, I just read your instructions for the first time, and found them almost impossible to understand. I'm a real newbie when it comes to burning, bash, BeOS and other things. But it seems to make sense if you're going to use a fat 32 partition, go into Explorer, rt. click on the drive icon, choose properties, and rename the sucker without spaces. My Disk manager named mine "disk1_vol1, disk1_vol2" etc., without spaces. I saw that BeOS calls them all "no name", with a space, and went in and named the new partitions on my 2nd computer so I don't have to deal with that.

First off don't add a 3rd session for drivers etc use my method & build a cd just like BeOS Pro factory disc's. It may seem long winded but it's the best way to make an instal cd. http://wiki.bebits.com/page/BeOSInstallCD
the bootable floppy boots any BeOS disk virtual or other wise that cant be booted on it's own due to drivers or what have you. The stock boot floppy with PE is about useless on a new machine as you need to have the IDE replacement drivers so ALLways use the IDE replacement floppy image for your cd's boot sector & make sure you have the drivers installed as system drivers as well. read my guide, some say it's too much & yes there are many quick & dirty methods but think of it this way. Make a bad ass install as my guide walks you through & then when you have a buddy interested in Be you can whip out this phat install cd for him (Just copy yours with a slick ass install routine as my guide shows you ho to make) Also keep your disk up to date by useing an rw & update the extra software often so if you make a cd for a buddy & say a new beshare comes out just update your cd & copy it quick for him. Even on normal cdr all you have to do is make a new blank iso file - mount it copy your old cd's contents into it & add the updated software into your allready created structure. ;) party on

Now, I wonder if the following would work:
1) download BeOS PE 5 for Linux to get the hd and floppy images
2) burn the floppy image to disc for booting
3) write the beos image to the same cd
4) do a third write to the cd, making a session holding exstra files like video-driver, 5.0.1/5.0.3 update files, dev tools, BeShare, etc.
> That should work just fine!
And one more question; what exactly does the bootable floppy do? Does it have any tools for installation or is it solely intended for booting a virtual file system? Would it be more feasible to put the hd image together with the additional files on the disc and boot from the virtual partition in that file on the cd (combining step 3 and 4 above)?
Tnx

Hi,
I'd like to try BeOS on my home computer. To do that I need to make a bootable install-cd (I don't have a floppy drive). I prefer installing on a real partition. Oh, and I need to make the cd at school in winNT, so I can't fool around in the virtual file system before writing it to disc.

Would it be more feasible to put the hd image together with the additional files on the disc and boot from the virtual partition in that file on the cd (combining step 3 and 4 above)?
Tnx

Grub can be used, however I doubt that it will boot from a Beos PE image file. You'd most likely have to create a primary partition for Beos to reside on.
