That is a newer chipset, and supports 2x/4x AGP. Nice, but I don't think anyone has written a driver for it yet. You might check www.bedrivers.com to see if anyone else is requesting or working on it. I'm in the same boat with a Mobility M4 in my Dell C800.

If all else fails, you can try VesaAccepted: http://www.bebits.com/app/1105

UMAX & 604e speed

sjoedin - You should see really good results with that machine. I am a little hesitant to suggest a Pentium equivalent, for obvious reasons. I will say that my main PPC machine started as a 603e (MUCH slower than the 604's) @200MHz. The speed was acceptable, though not dazzling. Dropped in a G3 card....Vrooooom!!! (320MHz)

Your UMAX has a faster system bus, and (I think) more RAM expansion potential than my 4400. With a G3 card, it should rock! Make sure you pick up a two or three-button ADB mouse, though. One-button just blows in BeOS... ;-)

Thanks to both of you for the feedback!
I have a sluggish UMAX 604e 200 MHz PPC that I'll try to get BeOS R5 Pro up and running on.

Shatty: Is this a web address?:
frizbe.hardware.net
I can't get my browser to find it!

Jess: What's OBOS? Where can I read about it?

Are there any benchmarks on speed differences between BeOS R5 when it's running on a PPC and when it's running on an intel?

What does a 604E PPC @ 200 MHZ compare to in pentium speed?

Thanks for discussing this!

Buying BeOS R5 Pro for PowerPC-based Macintoshes

Although the R5 is not being sold be gobe anymore, you can still find it sold on eBay, and tycomsystems has a few more. It's also available on purplus.com for $38. As always, please check your hardware at frizbe.hardware.net to see if it is supported. (G3 add-in cards are supported, G3 motherboards are not, for example.)

Apple stoped giving Be Inc. spec on the systems b4 the G3 thus BeOS will not run on anything above a power pc. If you have come to the conclusion classic macOS sucks & has the ability to crash if you even so much as think about opening 2 applications try a linux flavor... OMG I said linux!!! God help us all!!! Other then that sjoedin just have patience & wait for OBOS. We should be able to run on G3 G4 & G5 then. Macs... cant live with 'em ... can't afford 'em... uh... I mean can't live with out them...

Well, have you tried taking out your soundcard? (or disabling it in the bios if it's onboard). See if your NIC works then - I had a similiar problem with a 3com card in my aptiva 2153. The NIC's I/O settings were conflicting with the onboard sound. I had to get a config diskette for the NIC and manually force the card to use a specific IRQ and I/O port assignment. If removing your soundcard solves the problem then this would be the next thing to look at. Good luck...... ;o)

I tried switching the PCI slot, still no luck. Though when I took the card out I noticed that it's version 4.1, and I found another source saying that BeOS only supports up to version 3, so I guess I'm stuck unless I can find a 3rd-party driver. Oh well.

sorry dude I over looked that the card model was in there. The only thign I can think of is move it - swap it with another card. you can change irq til yoru blue in the face but it may be the mother board + Be dont like that card in the pci slot you have it in. This is the next best thing to try.

I said in my post: Linksys Etherfast 100BaseTX.
I've run the updates to R5.03, and there is nothing on the drivers page as the card's supposed to be supported by the OS directly.
One thing I have noticed is that sound and ethernet are both on IRQ 11, but I've been unable to change that in the devices settings.
I've posted a screenshot at http://www.appstate.edu/~ec50246/beosscreen.png that shows my devices and network settings windows, it doesn't say anything different than what was in my post, but if you'd rather see it, go ahead.

Ethernet card not working, even though it's officially supported

Settings->Devices lists the ethernet card as enabled under PCI Devices

IRQs: 11
DMAs:
IO Ranges: 0xec00 - 0xecff
Memory Ranges: 0xd9000000 - 0xd90003ff

Under Configure->Info

Card Name: <Unknown>
Device Name: Ethernet
Logical Device Name: <Unknown>
Bus Type: PCI Device
Device Type: Network Controller (Ethernet)
Base: 2 Subtype: 0 Interface: 0
Vendor: Bridgecom, Inc. (0x1317)
Card ID: 985
Current State: Enabled
Resource Conflicts: None
I just noticed that sound and ethernet are sharing an IRQ, is that a problem?
However, Settings->Network lists no network interfaces and networking is not set up. I tried going ahead and entering the domain, hostname, and DNS addresses manually, but I'm still unable to connect.
According to http://www.befaqs.com/support/solutions.cgi?c=read&doc=nicr5, my ethernet card (Linksys Etherfast 100BaseTX) is officially supported in BeOS.

Sounds like a lockup

If you get the light-blue screen, you're close to a complete startup. Though, it seems that you're getting a lock-up of some kind. You could try some safe-mode options during boot (press spacebar when you see the bootscreen). What hardware do you have on that Aptiva?
Processor, memory, hard drive types, video, sound, etc.
Check that you do not have any IRQ conflicts (BeOS does not like IRQ sharing, though I don't know if that would cause a freeze during startup).

trouble installing

My apologies in advance if this is the wrong place to post.

I am a total newbie - after years of hearing about BeOS, and the recent comparisons with MacOSX, I decided I wanted to try the operating system Neal Stephenson compared with a Batmobile.

I downloaded the Personal Edition installer for Windows, made a boot floppy, and booted my machine.

After a splash screen, everthing turned blue. There was no mouse pointer, no icons, nothing, just a plain blue screen.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is there anything I can do to get BeOS working? Is there somewhere on the web that I can get help?

My machine is an Aptiva E Series 245. It is currently set to dual boot in Win2K and FreeBSD.

Thanks for your help!

I don't think so either... but you never know. Last update from VMWare 2.0 to 3.0 made BeOS run (without the VMware company trying to do so)

>Yes, you need to disable the SSE instruction support on your BIOS. BeOS does not like it. AthlonXP is NOT fully supported by BeOS. There are known problems with it

I have used the patch to correct the problem (my bios cannot disable sse ...sniff!!!). I havent found other problems with AthlonXP after the patch. I have been using it for 6 months now on a 1700+ system and compared with a 366 Celeron it is 5 times faster. Haven't seen anything different in the behaviour other than that.

Yes, there are timing issues on VMWare with BeOS. This is a known problem, and I am not sure that it is fixed for VMWare 3.1.

Yes, you need to disable the SSE instruction support on your BIOS. BeOS does not like it. AthlonXP is NOT fully supported by BeOS. There are known problems with it.

The title says everuthing... I just can understand how an OS with even a web server, or a partitioning utility Buil-in, hasn´t had a great success. It´s fast, truly stable, has features that makes it be the most advanced SO still now; and there are enough programs to work with it: good web browser (mozilla), AOL and ICQ programs, an ofimatic suite, Gobe, mp3 players, Divx codec, some games, a sharing system (Beshare), recording software (one is built-in in the OS), drivers for the most of the Hardware, PDF viewers, image editing tools, and so on...

So, is marketing all what counts... (¬¬ M$)? ;(

Don´t abandon it, it still has a future in front of it, just hope the OpenBeOS folks finish they work soon (talking in months/years) :) (or the BlueOS team surprises us :)

BeOS 5 Works in VMWare (Kind of)

You can actually use the Vesa Video driver if you put the Host OS in 16bit color (At least I have seen it work in WinXP and Win2000 using 16 bit color and VMware 3.0.
Only problem is that the clock still behaves badly. Everything else runs fine though. Just one problem. Since I bought an Athlon XP, installation of BeOS 5 has become tricky even outside VMWare!!!
I am going to try VMWare 3.1beta and see what comes up.

I got it to work under VMware 3.0 óò

I got it to work under VMware 3.0, but doesn't perform exceptionally well either. The video emulation is not recognized by BeOS 5 (you get the greyscale video default, ultra slow). The mouse movement is super choppy. The clock does the most funkiest thing ever when you put VMware into Supend. When the clock getting the time from the BIOS and trys to update the clock, instead of instanly changing the time to match, it will do an incremental update of the time. Sometimes when you right click to make the menu appear and click somewhere else to make it dissappear, the menu becomes stuck on the screen. I did this more out of curiosity than anything else. I did it on my main computer which is a server with win2k adv. server (and no i dont use IIS). my mother board has no legacy support for a floppy. òo none of my other hardware is supported either.

I dont suggest anybody else try this.

So much has happened people forget their roots in this community. For me, I was a BeOS man from R4. However, I never really got up the rungkus to purchase the OS. I would look at articles and screenshots, dream about getting it, replacing Windows /forever./ Then came R5 PE. I think this decision to make a free version hooked many many current citizens in the BeOS community. Yes, I was utterly convinced to purchase R5 Pro after using PE for a month.

To any and all unsure about the /power/ of BeOS: give it a month too, won't ya!?

Great!
