Follow the direction here, clear and has the links you need to click on. Other than a link to VLC, and manually installing the fakeflash plugin, firefox should install the rest.

Once you install greasemonkey, it should install the script itself when you click the link.

I've got the tutorial and related files in sloppy english here:

http://files.frashii.com/~sp00nz/Doom/BeOS/Internet/Play%20Youtube%20via%20Firefox/

I have followed all the steps, put vlc where it should be, put fakeflash in the firefox plugins folder, but now don't know what to do or where to put that script and how to use it.

Any advice?

but when will see sites with flash ?

a lot of programmers ,, loose ,, their time with
programs that nobody need.....we want to see sites
with flash.....tv,s on internet with vlc plugin
---substitute for qtime realplayer or mplayer---...
...we need audio mp3 recorder....for that the free
beos 5.4 is very good.....we don,t need amazing
windows and menus like vista or mac....we want more
files recognize and convertions....streams....asx..
etc.....these ar the priorities.....

Minefield: Have loaded it on two comps. One Intel and One AMD. On the Amd it won't load Bookmarks 3.04 but that is no prob as it picked up the bookmarks from the previousl version. Minefield cold boots in one second on the AMD. looking good!!

It's hard to answer if the build is faster than the one you used before, becuase it may have had another patch that also was designed to speed up input and drawing. It should however be much faster than a clean CVS build. It's good to know that it feels faster at least.

glad it's working for you. the last round of bleeding edge builds have focused on building only from CVS without any patches, to insure functionality of the unpatched binary. NetPositive bookmarks import requires a patch (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=202632) that was rejected for inclusion into CVS code but is usually applied here. I'll apply it to the next round of branch builds and/or the "official" firefox 2 version, whichever comes first.

Using BeOS max with bone.
Imported net+ bookmarks don't work anymore and
organize bookmarks only changes the display
in the "organize" window. Under "Bookmark" the list is
still random!

Big improvement is, with this version I can close some annoying full screen advertisements.

Good build, guy !

Btw it's possible to use locale files from http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0rc2/linux-i686/xpi/ . Install the one you missed (frFR.xpi by example) by clicking it (FF should ask for sercurity problem : add server to list). Install also the "locale switcher" extention. Now you chould choose the locale in Tools menu.

Please let us know what version of BeOS/Zeta you use (use the "about BeOS" or "about Zeta" from the deskbar) I believe the grey bookmarks window you report is only happening on R5.0.3 and older systems. We need to verify. Thanks for your kind words and for your help!

Appreciate any comments

Minor problems with 2.0 Build (2006-09-30 RC1)

Two more things came up:
The properties of a bookmark come up in a gray window. Only the invert-selected title of the bookmark is readable. Redrawing the window by wiping it with another window or moving it outside the desktop works, although with some gray artifacts remaining.
There's also a focus issue. Moving via keyboard tab to the different text fields works. The mouse doesn't.

Issue 2: Drag 'n' drop of a bookmark results in a copy instead of a move.

Still camping happily... :)

Firefox in BeOS doesn't really need an installer, does it? I'm using Firefox 2.0 RC1 with ZETA - to update, simply delete your old firefox program folder (in Zeta it's /boot/apps/Internet/Firefox) and extract 2.0 there instead. Or you could make a custom /boot/home/apps/firefox folder.

Am a Mac type BeOS user who really likes BeOS for its "user friendlyness".

Have not tried FireFox for a while because was having problems installing and everyone I know also had probs.

Have been testing Windows FireFox2.0 since the Alpha stage and like its features so would like to try the BeOS ver again.

Hope someone has made an easy to install version of FireFox2.

Also agree about starting with a stable FF2 ver and then add all the bells and whistles.

Thanks for the best Firefox so far!
It's totally stable for several hours of surfing; didn't have a crash or freezing on my old dual-P3 with R5! Funtastique! It even feels a bit more responsive under heavy load, though that's a problem with this old computer under Windows-Firefox as well...

Two issues though. One annoying: Resizing the sidebar or the window itself is really kinda slow. Often the app doesn't register me releasing the mousebutton and keeps resizing.
Cosmetic: When an alert pops up, a white 32x32 filled rectangle appears as soon as the mouse hovers over the alert's window. The white box disappears as soon as you press one of the buttons (e.g. Cancel or OK).

Other than that I'm a pretty happy camper!. THANKS!
And good luck on your Bug-Crushing-Day on 10/11!

thank you for your encouragement! we absolutely are working on stability. The Firefox 2.0 versions should be much more stable than previous releases, both in the core code and BeOS-specific sections. Your faithful BeZilla team will continue to work towards a stable, useable browser platform for our favorite OS.

Now there is the new Firefox 2.0 Version. Would it be possible to concentrate on stability only? Without plugins, bookmarks, and othere problem makeing add-ons.
Just to get a stable Browser first.

And add the problem parts after.

I know it is difficult for you developer out there. Sorry I cannot help you with programming. You browser developer for BeOs, are one of the most important part for the success of BeOs/Zeta in my eyes...

Someone, or we the community should be able to pay you for at last for your honorable work. I by myself have no work, no money. The only thing at the moment I can give you from heart is my optimistic belive in your knowledge, your work together with a lot of respect and hope for a successful Beos/Zeta/Haiku future.

In my eyes you guys are a very important piece in the puzzle right now...

lets solve it...

If there is a sponsor out there... pls donate this group to get this great Operating system to the place where it belongs to...

Missing plugins

Current version when comment was posted: 2006-06-30 Semi-native
The plugins is NOT part of the browser, they are third party apps built to work with the browser. So you would have the same problem with Opera or any other browser. For Flash you could always try to port Gnash.

"Buying" plugins

The main web plugins are Java and Flash. Java has been started, but is postponed until Haiku because of some BeOS issues I believe. Flash is closed-source; macromedia used to sell the specification but since Adobe acquired them I'm not sure if that's still the case.

Even the latest linux version is only Flash 7, Windows and OSX are on 9 - so BeOS isn't in too bad a shape.

It's unfortunate that in order to support Flash you need to go through a commercial party, and they're unlikely to be receptive until we have either a) lots of users or b) lots of money.

I'm very optimistic that stuff like this will come with Haiku, but for now the whole BeOS community is just ticking by, almost in hibernation. We all hope spring is just around the corner!

Thanks for putting me on the right track, I changed
settings to open new pages in new window. It was set on "new tab" and "warn me before closing multiple tabs" but the latest didn't warn me. :-)
Anyway now it works like I am used to.
Now if I can find an other side which opens a full screen new window blocking all my controls, I might ask you a solution for that too.

About the missing plugin issue that is really a shame,
I do like BeOS very much and I am using it for many years now. The growing problem with the modern websites may force me to ditch BeOS and switch to Linux. Which is something I really hate to do.
I do appreciate all developers working on the browser and other things, but I hate it that I must boot another OS just to see a BeOS invisible webpage.
One of the main reasons I am happy with BeOS is the invulnerability for viruses. It just beats me that the even people of YT/Zeta don't wanna recognize that a modern OS should be able to show all webpages to start with.
Things like multi user capabilities is something that should come way after browsing the web.

So if there is a possibility we gather some money and
buy a working -let say opera with working plugins and
printing stuff, I be happy to pay for that, if that is impossible, that's a shame!

edmund, the "missing plugin" issue goes deeper than the browser, I'm afraid. We sadly don't have functioning current versios of shockwave/flash, nor can we expect Real or Microsoft to cough up current versions of their media players/plugins anytime soon.

It's not a matter of money so much as people. I believe the state of our apps simply reflects the small size of our contributing community. There have been bounties posted in the past (for things like printing). There are just so few qualified BeOS developers out there that those who can contribute already are contributing. There's more work than people to do it, I'm afraid. We should be very happy we have people like fyysik, tqh and our newest dev, mrmdls for the countless hours they pour into these labors of love.

And no, I don't count myself in the dev ranks. I merely maintain the theme and test what I can. I am always in awe of their ability to see through the code to find bustage and issues.

I tried the experiment you mentioned; the patent search page opens a new Firefox window. Could it be your browser is already full-screen, so this new window opens right on top of the old? There are a couple of things to try: in Tools/options/tabs, select the "new tab" option for opening new pages. You might like this better anyway.
Also, I wonder if something might be amiss with your profile. It sounds like your browser is opening the patent page in the same window as the previous page instead of a new one. You can run Firefox with the "--profilemanager" option and create a new profile to see if the problem continues.

I agree with the pay thing. This is haw we do it on eComStation / OS/2. Even though the apps are free elsewhere, we pay to get good things written / ported. OpenOffice is a great example. I'd definitely throw money at a group that is actually getting things ported working! I'd pay for Mozilla, Opera whatever, if it worked, and worked well. Porting plugins as well.

idea that all BeOS users pay a little so we can hire

I for one are willing to pay for it and that is about all I can contribute since I cannot program.
How about buying an Opera Browser?
