Beam crashing on haiku
 By Oliver Tappe - Posted on March 26, 2009 - 07:24:56   (#23108)
Current version when comment was posted: 1.1.2
Hi Lelldorin,

I have not been following the discussion here until yesterday, since Bebits does not seem to be sending out any notifications about new comments anymore. If you want to improve the likeliness of being heard, please post any Beam-related problems to one of Beam's mailing lists, see: http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=68608

Now on with the topic - thanks for reporting the crash! Stephan has fixed a similar problem recently, the main cause for those crashes is some kind of borderline behaviour of Beam which R5 accepts and haiku does not.
I will fix the crash today in the repository, such that the next release will behave more nicely. Generally speaking, the main purpose of the next release of Beam (apart from one or two new features) is to get it running on haiku just nicely.

cheers
Oliver

This may not be relevant, but Beam will crash if there's no 'mail' folder in your home directory.

Just type "bt" at the GDB command prompt and hit Enter. It will print a "back trace", which gives the programmer an idea what happened.

Current snapshot build for Haiku

If You are interested here is the daily build of BEAM for Haiku:

http://miqlas-backup.extra.hu/haiku/beam_dev.zip

It don't contains the SieveFilter addon, because i can't build it.

ATTENTION! This is not a stable release, only a build of the current sources, it might contains some bugs!

Beam, IMAP, and MDR.
 By adamk - Posted on March 1, 2009 - 07:32:23   (#23086)
Current version when comment was posted: 1.1.2

MDR, when I tried a few weeks ago, kept crashing. The previous time I managed to get it to work, though, it didn't function like a real IMAP client. It downloaded all messages and folders (rather than just headers) the first time it was run, only polled the inbox for new messages, and moving messages between folders on the clients didn't move them around on the server. I do not know if IMAP has been implemented properly since then, but if I can't get it to stop crashing, I'll certainly report that as a bug and hope they get at least the crashing fixed.

Which is why I was hoping Beam would work :-)

Have you tested BeMail that are built in to Haiku/BeOS?

It's a file base system not like any other Mail System.. (good or bad)

I also think that asking these questions a t the Haiku or Haiku developer mailing list would get you better answer.

Anyone?

Please? It seems that Haiku, much like BeOS, is still missing a decent, fully functional IMAP client.

Pulling all folders with IMAP

Is it possible to get Beam to show all folders on an IMAP server, and check subscribed ones for new messages? After setting up my accounts, it only seems to show and check the inbox.

Hi Lelldorin,

my current plans are to make one more release of Beam (1.2) for BeOS (i.e. R5, BONE, Zeta and haiku).
After that, Beam will be changed to make use of haiku's layout engine and as a result of this, will not work on anything else than haiku.

I suppose Beam will never be integrated into haiku as part of the base distribution, since haiku already comes with MDR. But since Beam works on haiku, I am pretty sure that it will be available as a third-party package.

cheers,
Oliver

Beam (and BeOS/Haiku) uses extended file attributes to hold email related information such as status, From, To, Subject, etc. If I am not mistaken, Beam (or any other native email client) won't work as expected if you place your email files on a FAT volume, as the latter does not have support for attributes.

You may be able to share your email by using Thunderbird on both system, but TB on Haiku/BeOS is not known to be very stable/mature.

Hi Stan,

'Tofu' in Beam is what other mail clients often call 'ham', i.e. a proper e-mail (the opposite of SPAM).

So if you tell Beam to learn a mail as TOFU, it will be learnt as a proper mail (the SPAM-filter's database will be adjusted accordingly) and this mail will be moved into the 'in' folder.
If you learn any message as SPAM, Beam will scan this mail's content for relevant words and store those as SPAM indicators into the SPAM-filter's database. Additionally, this mail will be marked as read and moved into the 'spam' folder.

The aim of all this business is to train the SPAM-filter to autodetect future SPAM-mails automatically and move those into the spam folder directly upon receival (so they do not distract you from the important stuff).
Without the user telling Beam which mail he/she/it considers SPAM, the SPAM-filter would not know what to do. Judging from my tests, it should pick up your drift pretty fast, i.e. after 10 or so learnings, the SPAM filter should show pretty good results already.

cheers,
Oliver

Hi nicnac,

I suppose that "the relation with people doesn't work" means that when you click on 'Edit Address' (or 'Import & Edit Address') Mr.Peeps does come up but it doesn't navigate to the chosen address. If that's the problem you are seeing, I'm afraid I'll have to pass the bucket to the author of Mr.Peeps: I have just tried clicking on a People file and Mr.Peeps behaves the same (it opens, but doesn't show the specific person).
I think that's a bug in Mr.Peeps...

cheers,
Oliver

This error can mean two things:

1)you are trying to start on older version of Beam after you have
used the current version (starting a current version will update
the structure of the config files such that the older versions can't
read them anymore)

2)something went wrong and the 'Identities' config file is broken

If you think it's choice 2, then please send me your 'Identities' file (it doesn't contain any secret data) and I will check it out.

You can get Beam to do that by doing this:

- ensure that in Beam's 'General Settings' prefs page, the
option 'Beep when new mail arrives' is active

- select a sound for the system sound event 'New E-Mail'
(Preferences/Sounds)

That should do it.

Oliver
