I've finally switched from Mail-It to Beam. I'm sorry I didn't do it a long time ago. Beam is great. But there is a feature in Mail-It that I like -- I can set it up to play a sound when I have new mail. Can that be done somehow in Beam?

Yes, preview & pdf printers work.
The problem is with the BinkJet Print Dialog window. If I leave the Page Range = All (default setting), I get no print job.
But if I set Page Range manually, say, from 1 to 1 or 1 to any number, I get printing.
This quirk might be just my installation.

Hm, I never came across this kind of problem.
Have you tried making the preview-printer default and try with that one (or the PDF-Printer available from BeBits)?
Does printing work from other apps?

Is there some secret to getting BEAM to print an e-mail? I'm using BinkJet 2.0 and an HP DeskJet 832 & I just getting a spinning icon and no print job for the HP. Thanks for any help.

Hi there,
I'm afraid you'll need just a little more patience...

You can't do that currently.
You have to manually open each pending message (via doubleclick) and then press send.
This, of course, is another feature that will be present in the next release.

Sorry, but this feature is not yet available.
In the next version the outgoing filters will actually work, so you could use mail-filtering in order to have sent mails automatically be filed into a different folder.

I want to say thanks a lot for the PPC version too. On BeOS PPC, a devent mailer really was missing. I think I will switch to Beam on my x86 PC too, after using MailIt for years now (no other client convinced me to switch). Beam has become my favourite mail client.
Thanks again!

I had similar "problem". If You reinstalled BeOS and loaded backuped people files than You have to reindex them (their attributes).
Download great application by Axel from http://www.bebits.com/app/2033 and run it from terminal ("reindex -rvf /boot" IIRC) - that should remove the problem :).

Thanks for the hard work you've done on Beam - it is easily my favorite BeOS mailer.
I do, however, have a problem with the 1.0 version: only a single person (the first one) from my list of people in /home/people appears in the various popup menus such as "To:". I am running the non-Beam version of Beam on Beos Max v2.1. I have 104 people in my people folder.
Again, thank you!

But please *never* spread a mailbox across devices, that is a Bad Idea (TM)!

ANd beam does manage well the temporary files...

Result: Cross-device link
As BeMail can do that since last release, it sould be great that Beam follows ;-)

The version of beam is beam for BONE, and my version of beos if r5, but it is personal version, does this have anything to do with it?
Since then I have downloaded the other version of beam and it works fine, just not the version for bone?

Interesting problem, since libnetapi.so is indeed a system library and should be found under /boot/beos/system/lib on any system (R5, BONE and Dano).
What version of Beam have you downloaded and which system are you using?

Something must be really screwed with Your BeOS installation, as "libnetapi.so" is system library.
Or You used wrong build (i'm not sure if BONE/Dano has such library).

Of all of the e-mail apps I've tried so far, Beam seems to work, and works the best. With so many mail servers going to stronger authorization, this app can handle it (unlike the built-in mail daemon).

Instead of posting here you could have just search BeBits for Liblayout. It is a third patry library. Install it from here and Beam will work. http://www.bebits.com/app/3363

I'm running BeOS professional (The original as distributed by Koch Media), upgraded to 5.0.3 on Intel Pentium IV PC. Software valet unpacked it and placed the BEAM folder in Apps.
When you double click the app it gives:

Something I'd love to see on beos is a mail client which utilizes the razor/spamnet spam filter, from experience it seems to be the most effective way to kill spam mail and without it I tend to be a victim of around 20-30spam mails per day.
http://razor.sourceforge.net
Just a quick run down from the page.
"Vipul's Razor is what you now commonly know as SpamNet. For nearly two years, Razor has been successfully fighting spam with the help of the Unix community and is the technology that has enabled us to build its windows counterpart, SpamNet, currently in use by more than 100,000 users. Razor, or SpamNet, is a distributed, collaborative, spam detection and filtering network. It establishes a distributed and constantly updating catalogue of spam in propagation. This catalogue is used by clients to filter out known spam. Upon receiving a spam, a Reporting Agent (run by an end-user or a troll box) calculates and submits a 20-character unique identification of the spam (a SHA Digest) to its closest Catalogue Server. The Catalogue Server echoes this signature to other trusted servers after storing it in its database. Prior to manual processing or transport-level reception, Filtering Agents (end-users and MTAs) check their incoming mail against a Catalogue Server and filter out or deny transport in case of a signature match. Catalogued spam, once identified and reported by a Reporting Agent, can be blocked out by the rest of the Filtering Agents on the network."
It would be a very handy addon.

stephenb: Does the mail-folder /boo/home/mail still exist?
This message sounds as if Beam is trying to open the root mail-folder and can't find it.
Have you perhaps moved this folder onto a different volume?
In any case, maybe deleting Beam's mail- & folder-cache does help. Just remove the file 'Folder Cache' and the folder 'MailCache' from Beam's settings dir (/boot/home/config/settings/Beam.
If that does not help, please mail me and I will check things further.
cheers,
Oliver

When I startup Beam (BONE version), I get the following error message in an alert box:
*** Exception at /boot/home/Sources/beam/
BmMailFolder.cpp: 186 ***

Error:Invalid argument
I think this has only happened since I installed UpToDateWithCVS (as it was the program that created the ~/Sources dir), although I'm not sure why or how to fix it.

Hi, here are a couple of detail that I think could be improved as I find them annoying (regarding the quality of the rest):
_ On boot, just create the cache for the current selected directory, Beam is very looong to start because of my big number of mails. And then when u move through dirs the cache is updated.
_ The arrow of the root directory "mail" should be removed. It's useful only if you have different directories but otherwise it suxx.
_ When pressing delete on a mail in the list, Bema should select the previous one. That's easy to do in your KeyDown:
int32 n = listview->CurrentSelection();
listview->RemoveItem(n);
listview->Select(n);
or something like that ;-]]
Keep up good work and improvement.

forgive me if this is a silly question with a simple answer, but how come none (at least that I've seen) of the alternative email clients have spell checkers? Seems to be something only available with Be's mailer. Seems like that'd be a pretty important feature.
