Hi!
Is it possible to have ReOS check out BeBits for UPDATES of
SUBSCRIBED apps ... and than chose to install tham and their dependencies or not ?
Is it possible to use Python insetad Perl as that would give access to BFS attributes?
Best wishes with this work
so far it looks very inteligent.

We need good apps like this, and please not fragmented! Discuss and focus and we will have one good application that can be in the OpenBeos distro.

It's not the _OpenBeOS_ replacement, but it is a replacement. ;-)
I will check out what you're doing with the SoftwarValet replacement, though, since we'll want to do what we can about compatibility.
Should you and I talk about installation directory standards 'n such?

FYI,
I just wanted to make sure that everyone understands that ReOS is NOT the replacement for the PKG file format and the SoftwareValet/Package Builder tools.
The OpenBeOS team is working on a replacement for this functionality ( actually, I am the engineer on this project ).
If you would like to get information about the progress of this part of the OpenBeOS project, you can visit my personal website at the following URL:
http://www.codewrangler.com/projects/swd.html
Thank you for your time and attention!
Also, pardon me, to the ReOS folks, for intruding on your comments section. I just wanted to clear things up so that no one is confused.
Sincerely,

| "immature and untested code" |

No, the goal is certainly _not_ to encourage non-technical users to install and run "immature and untested code". In addition to the warning here on the BeBits page about the ReOS Manager itself being an alpha version, the OpenBeOS package notes state:
"YOU MIGHT WANT TO NOT INSTALL THIS.
This is the first release from OpenBeOS, and installs replacement preference applications. This involves mucking with the BeOS system itself, and is kinda dangerous, so you should be aware that installing this is risky and (unless you know how the package manager retains backup files) could be difficult to revert."
It's very important that, as the code for any new project is written, it only be run by folks who can either 1) handle their machine getting hosed or 2) know how to recover from any damage it can do. This is _especially_ important when dealing with OS code and installers.
So, _please_ don't install this version of the ReOS Manager (or any other development or alpha code, for that matter) unless you're installing on a test box/partition or are technical enough to fix a broken BeOS system by hand.

To idiot : Of course it is not "offical". No realise of OBOS ever will be. (As far as I know) there are going to be no "offical" distros of OBOS. The OBOS team is going to rely on people and organisations like ReOS and Beunited (or anyone else) to package and distribute their code.
To ReOS dude : ignore this geeza below - this is a great idea! I kind had a pet dream of making a distro of OBOS when it finally arrives, and I am kinda jealous that at this great idea. Well done! =]

the LAST thing the OpenBeOS team needs is for the average user to be encouraged to install immature and untested code. This program seems to encourage it.
If you want to test OpenBeOS, please wait for official releases. This application is NOT official.

IMO this is a _vital_ part of the migration from BeOS to OpenBeOS - particularly for the horde of non-technical users like myself. So thank you!

Basically, it's a package manager right now. It's conceptually based on the *BSD ports system, where the local machine has a repository of package descriptions (which is kept synchronized to the master repository via CVS) and an app that knows how to use them.
The ReOS Manager app knows how to keep its repository synchronized with the package repository on our server and how to install packages. It can't uninstall yet, but I'm working on that. ;-)
This installer will install:
the ReOS Manager
Perl
CVS
Wget
SSH
(The others are necessary for the package manager to function.)
In the future, this will grow to be a full operating system, composed of BeOS Personal Edition, the parts available from OpenBeOS and OpenTracker and the ReOS Manager itself. The goal is to build into a complete Linux-style distribution, either downloadable from the Net or available on CD.
I hope that clears up any confusion. Please let me know if it didn't.

i can't really tell what this is. it looks like a (potentially) nice installer/package manager for OBOS. if so, it's nice to see someone working on creating nice distribution of OBOS. if not, then what am i missing? also, some more info on what, exactly, is getting replaced by this would be nice, too.
