Thanks, Axel! I'd pretty much resigned myself to the likelihood that my files are unrecoverable, then someone pointed out that you'd updated the app.

I'm in the process of re-trying with the new version of recover - keeping my fingers crossed, if it works then I am forever in your debt.

Crash while attempting recovery

I have a drive with a BFS partition that I can still mount, but for some reason I can only see a Home folder in Tracker.

I've tried running the recovery app on it and it was able to scan through the drive and see the files (from what I could tell from the command line output). But it seems to crash after recovering a few hundred files.

It looks like it's running out of memory - the drive that I'm attempting to recover from has/had over 100GB of data on it, and my memory was maxed out at the time of the crash - at least according to process controller.

Unfortunately I forgot to run a stack crawl after it crashed - I'll try it again and post the results if it happens again.

Is there anything I can try to reduce the memory usage? Or would I be better of trying with a temp install of ZETA and some more RAM? I had been trying with BeOS Max on a machine with 512MB RAM.

Have you tried letting "recover" work on the extracted image (or can you still do so)? If that makes a difference, the raw mode might not be okay (usually, it should definitely be able to read all files from a BFS partition without any problems...).
Other than that, I probably can't do a lot about the issue right now. Next time I really work on the tools is probably after Haiku R1 :-)

Another BFS adventure

I had indexless (for building speed purpose) BFS partition, but occasionally "destroyed" it recently, with WinDos fdisk (maybe even "format").

So downloaded "new" (0.76) version of recover utility and started.

Situation was bit strange, because WinDos saw all FAT and BFS("Non-DOS") partitions perfectly, evend booted, but BeOS couldn't recognize anything at that disk at all, reporting in DriveSetup, for example, something like "IDE_bus_master:1".

So i was forced to use recover with -r key.
After long seeking it found requested BFS partition, among traces of other 16 BFS partitions and images i had at that disk, i choosed it (but also saved in text-file all info i got in recover printout) and started recovering.

Result was quite messy. Inspite for quick look most of files were restored, but not on proper folders (for some reason recover preffered to create nested "New Folders" and put those files there (about 100 000 at least in sum). Some files had wrong very abstract names, like those autogenerated passwords.

Not so funny. So i decided to try another approach - fed dd with seek parameter got by recover scan process
- as beginning of lost partition and saved it as image.

Then mounted image and did chkbfs - no errors at all, all files at proper places with proper names.

So, there i conclusion - utility needs some work - as it did some mistakes restoring "perfect" information from BFS for which it also determined proper parameters.

Still admiring Axel's fantastic work, i think that he may be intterested to know about this happenings

Does Bootman also save the extended partition table?

I'm looking for a backup tool that can also save my logical partitions layout. If Bootman does that, then it might turn up to be even more handy than I originally thought.

No, as the name suggests, it's only intended for BFS, and only knows about BFS, no matter in what partition context. Sorry :-)
But there are two more or less handy tools that can do this that come with BeOS: bootman (can save the MBR (incl. partition table) when installed), and, of course, "dd" (terminal application).

Can this tool backup/restore the partition tables?

Hm, at least a KDL is a sure sign that I am not guilty for what happened there :-)
Anyway, the crashing bug you experienced earlier can only happen if the hash table has been corrupted - either by lack of memory (unlikely as I tend to check for those -- and didn't find anything wrong by a brief look), or by some malicious code. And that may even be hard to find if I had your disk here. You don't happen to be at BeGeistert in April? I could definitely have a look at it there. If you don't need the drive urgently, you could also send it to me. I am open for all solutions you agree on :-)
I think it's easiest to continue this discussion via eMail, though.

Hi Axel,

I don't think I was out of memory, but I'm not sure. I had 384 MB at that point. I got a newer computer (PIII 933) with a new HD in it, so I moved 256 over, and found that my third 128 stick was only PC100, so I 'upgraded' to a 64 of PC133, so now I'm at 320.

Anyway, I copied all from the wonky SCSI drive to my old IDE using dd, then put the old IDE in the new comp alongside the new HD, and repartitioned the new one. Just now I ran recover -i and set the target as the new drive, trying to recover the IDE copy of the wonky SCSI data. I left and came back after dinner, and it had KDLed on the team update_apps or something like that from the registrar. recover had as its last line the same one as before:

names differ: BeFull -> CP264 assignment 2 20050205151209 Kevin Field (indices)

A very nice feature might be an 'undelete', or 'relink' program for files which were accidentally rm'd (unlinked).

GUI/fragmentation

I don't plan to join them with DriveSetup - as you can see in the documentation, I am thinking about making a commercial application out of this (but then with repair functionality, a GUI, and many more options).

Like any other file system, BFS has fragmentation issues, too. However, those are relativley little in comparison with many other file systems, especially NTFS does a poor job at avoiding fragmentation.
BFS is also not that good with avoiding fragmentation of the B+trees that contain directory and index data. Anyway, I will develop a defragmentation tool for OpenBeOS, but it probably won't find its way into R1. And that will be accessible from DriveSetup - like partition resizing, etc. :)

Some file systems are more prone to it than others. I am guessing (since I never read the spec) that BFS does its best to write files in contiguous space, or to control the quantity and size of the fragments if it must.

Fragmentation has never seemed to be a big issue with BeOS, ext and reiserfs, and other tree-like systems. I remember RMS (more of a mapped file system) and even NTFS having more issues.

Sorry, but you should have searched better. The BFS tools are available since 2002, and as long as it was not a hardware disk failure (i.e. the disk died), chances were good that it could have restored everything.

After all these years I yesterday ruined my HDisk somehow.
I couldn't mount it anymore, so I initialized it and reinstalled BeOS. So that files are lost forever :-(

Still happy with tools like this, after all you never ruin a disk if you have tools to recover it.

Wow, this sounds like a great suite of utilities! I had a BFS boot partition that I suddenly couldn't mount. It was a major bummer, as I've already started over, but I'm going to try the recover utility on it.
