Dockbert is a BeUnited project now, and sources are available via CVS.
i have no time for development and so far noone is interested in developing it further. i took down the website and will link to BeUnited soon.
there have been directions posted how to build Dockbert from source, alternativly you can get the latest "official" builds from BeShare without doubt.

anyone interested in taking over Dockbert development shall mail me ...

I recently checked out Dockbert and the latest OpenTracker from CVS - they both built perfectly. I'm going to add the instructions on my webpage, but for now, here's a simple version for all those that want Dockbert running on the latest OpenTracker :-

1. Make a directory called "src" in your home directory

2. Change into this directory, and checkout the OpenTracker CVS tree with this command (all one line) :-

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.opentracker.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/opentracker co opentracker

3. Grab the binary tools from the OpenTracker page, and unzip them into your "src" folder.
You should now have a "bin" directory, and the opentracker directory.

4. On my system (BeOS Online Developers Edition 1.1), for some reason, I had to manually add libstdc++ to the list of libraries to be included when building OpenTracker. Edit the makefile in the "tracker" folder so that line 166 reads

LIBS= translation stdc++

5. You should now be set. Go to the "opentracker" directory, and run "make", followed by "make install" - remember to backup your existing Tracker, Deskbar, and libtracker.so files!

6. Reboot - you are now running the latest CVS build of OpenTracker and can proceed to building dockbert.

Dockbert

1. In your "src" folder, create a new directory called "dockbert" and change into this.

2. Checkout the deskbar replacement and preferences utility from CVS with these two commands (each one line) :-

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@code.beunited.org:/cvs/dockbert co deskbar

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@code.beunited.org:/cvs/dockbert co prefs

3. This will create two new directories called "deskbar" and "prefs". GO into the "prefs" folder, and open "deskprefs.proj" with BeIDE. In the resulting window, choose Project->Make (or press Alt-M). Ignore the warnings that pop up, and you'll end up with a binary called "DockBert Preferences" in the folder. This is the preferences application - copy this to /boot/home/config/be/Preferences

4. Rename the "deskbar" folder to "dockbert" and move it into the OpenTracker folder (you may need to rename the folder from opentracker to OpenTracker, as the makefile in Dockbert uses the capitalised version)

5. Change into this "dockbert" folder, and run "make" - at the end of this, you should end up with a file in the obj.x86 or obj.ppc folders called "Deskbar" - this is the Dockbert deskbar replacement. You can then either copy it somewhere (/boot/apps, for instance) and run it from there - or you can overwrite your existing Deskbar in /boot/beos/system.

You can find Dockbert source on beunited's delevopment page. http://www.beunited.org/index.php?page=developer

According to HarvestMoon, one of the original developers, he is still working on it. He has a real life, so developement is slow.

I'd love to be able to help with developement, but I'm just learning to code. Contact him via the beunited page if you think you can help.

Thanks again to the developers for creating such a wonderfully useful and way cool tool. I find that I can't go back to a system without it, it is that good.

Dockbert is one of the my favourite apps, I use old version of OpenTracker so I could use dockbert... It's really a shame it's not being developed anymore and source code is not available.
There, I just wanted to say that.

It rocks. It's the most efficient taskbar ever.
Does not misuse visual space, very nice animations, useful pop-up options (just code the "bring here" options, please ;)

How about a panel to show the replicants?

You can remove the clock just like the other items!

I haven't used Dockbert since linn was an arse to me about getting the latest source (he had already given me older source before), so I have no idea how to remove the items (like Ctrl-Click or somethiong).

I love Dockbert and was wondering if it is still being developed.

Also, I just tried out the newest OpenTracker 5.1.8 and Dockbert doesn't work with that version. Since I have come to depend on Dockbert so much I'll most likely switch back to OT 5.1.5.

I sincerely hope that you continue to deveope this wonderful useful add-on

to delete icons just drag them to the trash in dockbert. The internal tracker icons aren't being used ATM, so, the home folder, app folder etc will get default folder icons.

Is there a way to turn off the second tab? I think it holds by default Net+ and BeShare. When I delete it, nothing happens, even after I restart the Deskbar.

Also, how come tracker shortcuts don't show their icons in a tab? Like, I've added /home and /apps, and their little superimposed icons don't show, just a standard Tracker icon. Now curiously, icons that I've edited will show up. Like I've done some Iconblender edits, and those show correctly.

Of course that means Dockbert has to know when you've quit cycling so that it will obey the stack order in further window cycling....(1, 2, 3, 1, 2 stop....next window cycling starts at 2, and then goes 1, 3, 2, 1, 3, 2....)

about the window cycling...

Current version when comment was posted: Build 106+ (1.0.2)
I must have not noticed this before. It seems that the window cycling goes from top to bottom, and then reverses to go bottom to top.

Let's say you have 1.jpg, 2.jpg, and 3.jpg open. 1.jpg is on top, 3.jpg is on bottom. The cycling will go 1, 2, 3, and then 3, 2, 1 (two clicks on the top and bottom of the stack). Is there way to make it so when you get to the bottom, it loops around to the top (1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3.....)?

Hmm. Dockbert has recently started using a proper Trash can icon (properly reflecting whether there is stuff in there ot not). What's odd is that I could swear it wasn't doing that yesterday, and I haven't upgraded dockbert (already on 106). Maybe I'm just easily confused, but it beats me...

Workspace switching.

Current version when comment was posted: Build 106+ (1.0.2)
Hey, just thought this might be a cool feature. Not sure how hard it would be to do, or if you even want to, but here it is:

When clicking on the little workspace number to switch between them, it might be nice to have an activation delay. What I mean is, if I want to click really fast forward 2 or 3 workspaces, it currently switches for each click. I admit on BeOS this isn't much of a performance issue, but it'd be nice if it waited a half-second for the clicking to stop before actually switching or something. That way, I can zoom past workspaces with different resolutions and not have to wait for my monitor to groan and gasp about changing modes.

Thanks! Dockbert is very cool. :-)

Hmm I didn't see icons were only 8 bpp in BeOS...
QuickRes does handle alpha blending, but it doesn't work with 8 bit images such as icons...
I think the easiest way would be in OBOS R2 to define new identifiers for icons, and so we could have both 32 bpp and 8 bpp icons in the binary
Maybe ICOX and MICX :^)

Though this is possible in applications on things such as UI controls and button bars, and other such items, it is not possible for standard icons (files, folders, app icons, etc). This is something that we should see in OBOS R2 or thereabouts. Unless someone wants to dedicate work to support this in OBOS R1 in a way that is backwards compatible with BeOS R5... Sorry for the OT.

Focus

Is there anything you can do to stop Dockbert pinching the focus when switching workspaces.
With the ordinary (Open)Deskbar when you switch workspaces the window that last had focus on this desktop gets it back. With dockbert, even if I switch with Alt+Fn the focus is taken (as far as I can tell) by the dockbert window at the bottom.
While I'm in feature request mode, how about keyboardableness too (when the dock window has focus walk left and right with the cursors, ret/enter/space to activate or pop-up with menu (not sure what combination is most sane)?
Thanks again for a funky app.

have the bubble tell the date in ancient roman form. For example, on march 15th, it would say, "It's the Ides of March.", or on November 30, it might say "It's the day before the Kalends of December." you could also set it up to display holidays, like on October 31st it might display "Happy Halloween!" just a thought.

Fitt's Law
 By vitg - Posted on April 19, 2002 - 05:26:33   (#1024)
Current version when comment was posted: Build 106 (1.0.2)
It'd be nice to have the active/clickable area extend all the way to the edge of the screen, which would make the apparant target you are trying to hit larger when you whizz the mouse over there (Fitt's Law is roughly 'the time taken to operate a control is proportional to how far away it is and it's area').

I have a few more thoughts but they might need illustrations. In short:
- changes to the icon to make it clear what will happen to something when it is clicked/dragged/dropped
- When moving items an I-bar or similar that shows where it will land if you let go
- The workspaces twiddler, a much abbreviated popup would be beneficial - just the numbers of the workspaces you'll get by hitting left/right mouse buttons [the interface on the Sony J25 mobile has this sort of thing looking pretty, I'll knock up a puic sometime]. Maybe I'm just backwards but it feels wierd that left takes you up one too - the mental model I have has them arranged in a long line 1 to the left, 9 to the right.

All in you're going some funky stuff though - thanks.

we will probably make the delay time for the tooltips customizable, so you can set it to your own needs.

actually, launched apps (that are not in the shortcuts) appear in the "running apps" tab, it is only hidden when it is empty.

Dockbert keeps getting better and better. The speed of development is amazing. Well done!

Just a few suggestions.

Perhaps the tool tips could be attached to about 5px from the top and in the center of the icons, rather than having it appear above the mouse.

Tools tips could appear automaticly. Waiting for them to appear can be a bit annoying, especially when you have many files with similar icons.

An option to have launched applications appear in a specified tab, rather than a new one.

Have folders display thier icons, rather than the default. For example, the people directory could appear with the icon it displays in the Tracker (a folder with a small people icon on it).

A replicant shelf! Please.. this IMO is the most important thing yet to be implemented. All the other stuff is secondary. Not being able to access the replicant shelf is driving me crazy :)
