I vote for separation from Deskbar as well

Hi linn, thanks again for an outstanding application.

It seems to me that Deskbar and Dockbert share an awful lot of functionality. I, for one, run Dockbert with Deskbar hidden. Why not just replace Deskbar completely? That way you get the notification messages you need, and you don't tie yourself to Deskbar at all.

There's not really any reason to have both a Deskbar and a Dock. Just add an Apps menu to the Dock and it's everything I need.

Dockbert

The whole issue of dockbert being or not included in Deskbar would give a huge conversation i guess. Yes, you can receive app lauching/quiting/etc events out of the Deskbar using a BRoster, but that alone is no reason for dockbert being independent of deskbar.. i guess that there are a lot of pros and cons.
> But what if you
stop development on this, and OpenDeskbar receives changes? What user will want to use an obsolete build
of the Deskbar just to get Dockbert?
The deskbar has somewhat of an internal modular structure so Dockbert is a another subscribed model inside the deskbar, only if the deskbar's source was changed to remove that modular interface would dockbert's sources not compile in it. But you can see that same problem with other Trackers like .NewFS, either the functionality is adopted or it will always live aside, its just the way things are.
From this point on, the only problem i see is that i might be changing some Deskbar internals to make it even more modular (e.g. in regard to add-ons, they are strictly tied to the BarWindow).. let's see what comes in the future.

are you sure ?

DockBert has to be a Deskbar

because otherwise, it won't be notificated with application-events/uptates.

Will be very cool, if we can put dockbert ath the corner of the screen (like deskbar), but with a `rounded' style..

Why?

Why did you decide to link Dockbert so intimately with the Deskbar? My thinking is that it'd have been better to have this be a stand-alone application.

As it is, you'll have to keep up with the OpenTracker mainline (admittedly, that won't be hard). But what if you stop development on this, and OpenDeskbar receives changes? What user will want to use an obsolete build of the Deskbar just to get Dockbert?

well

I don't need it

and I dont like it, but I think that is good for update Deskbar in top-right of screen with this enhancement.

Dockbert OWNS!

This program owns supremely I've been using it since it's first released incarnation back in February and I hate to use BeOS without it. I can't wait till it's finally finished/polished off.

That would explain it

Ok, ok. Well, maybe I'll switch so I can check out Dockbert. But the reason I'm running LocaleTracker is that it has NewFS. Oh well...

dockbert <- OT needed

sorry, a small info was forgotten, you must have the latest OpenTracker for Dockbert to work.

Not working for me...

I'm running 5.0.3 with the latest LocaleTracker.

When I try to launch Dockbert, nothing happens. When I run it from terminal, I get the message:

./Deskbar: Symbol not found

I can't think of anything unusual with my system that would cause this. Thanks for what looks like it's going to be a pretty interesting app. :)

Window Shapes in 5.1d0

5.1d0 supports window shaping, meaning i can shape a window to any other form that i want, it doesnt need to be a rectangle. dockbert uses this (if the user wants) to shape itself to show only the tabs and not its background.

you can have two deskbars running, but DONT!!!!

two deskbars running at the same time can have unpredictable effects on your system.
from a simple no-effetc up to kernel debugger land.
most commen problem is, that only ONE of the two deskbars (in general the first started) is "updated", meaning the other one isn't notified whenever an application is started/closed/whatever.
so JUST CLOSE the standard deskbar before starting dockbert (and i don't mean killing it, use ProcessController -> QuitAnApplication).
DockBert is always built around latest opentracker, so no functionallity is lost.

You can run two deskbars

>NOTE: YOU MUST QUIT YOUR RUNNING DESKBAR BEFORE RUNNING >A NEW ONE, AND DOCKBERT IS A DESKBAR, SO, IT ALSO APLIES

Not true. You can have two Deskbars running.

Also, what do you mean by window shaping (with respect to 5.1d0?)

Thanks for the work.

This is just what the BeOS desktop needs!

I have always hated the deskbar (even if some people actualy likes it) since it was an ugly combination of the M$ Windows start menu and the Mac menu-bar.

But Dockbert change everything, making my BeOS desktop a nicer neighbourhood to work and live in!

Great, Wonderfull, Fantastic..
