no sample editor?

"It was a shame to not have a good sample editor on BeOS"

"BamBam" has existed for years now, and I think it pretty much does everything that SampleStudio does at this point. It even does the same things badly: both BamBam and SampleStudio load the entire sample into memory.

Hey rain I know what your saying. My problem is that to make it consistant with the System colors means it will only have bright options. We cannot change our font colors & our menu colors are extreemly limited & can't go any where near what I like & want. While if you use the menu panel from the OBOS release you CAN make it as dark as you want since the colors are now unlocked it becomes a usless feature once you realize - "Hey! I can't change my fonts color!" So you can make your menus nice & dark but then lose font. Also the "highlight" color of apps & menus for that 3d look are hard coded & if you make your menu black it looks dumb to be so dark but with such a super bright shine on the light side. the highlight & shadow of the menus needs to be user definable or work on a ratio from the main colors. But this spews into more a hope & pray OBOS will fix & add this stuff disscussion then anything to do with Sample Studio.

Very Promising...

It looks great, but it's not quite there yet. It's stumbling over large file playback, especially compressed formats like mp3, but I'm mainly concerned about editing songs in .wav file format. I've got a lot of records and tapes I'd like to clean up and convert, so I'm especially interested in noise reduction features.
Still, it seems like it's already quite capable of handling smaller files, like samples and effects.

Jess, I agree with you. I don't think that colors should be hardcoded, it should be relative to whatever colors the rest of the system has. I prefer bright colors for a desktop system, but that's me, I can't expect everyone else to have that opinion. Those who likes it dark should be able to have it dark, and it should be consistant over the whole system.

The only problem with this from a developer/UI designers point of view would be the graphics used in the UI. They would either have to work with both light and dark backgrounds or you could have two sets of graphics. An alternative could be to use a palette of say 16 colors which are user defined to draw all the graphics, and perhaps use vectorgraphics instead of bitmaps, which would also be better for a scalable GUI, which is something I have a personal desire for :)

Great app!

I personally have not yet really been into sounds and sampling, but this is a great program! Eventhough called 'beta' I have not found anything wrong with it. Thanks!

Oh no!

I can totaly agree about havine the Node useage. My sound card does not have the option to record it's out put so recording things done on other apps in Be requires a crappy little eigth of an inch mini stereo jack. Thats sucks! but my OH NO is about UI. I had made the skin SUPER dark as soon as I got it. I have to say I have totaly had it with brightness. If this app was to not have a changeable color scheme & or A way to select at least one dark version of the "skin" it will be using in the end I will not use this application. Please don't reply about hardware -I have a good monitor & video card. Also it has nothing with "Look at me! I'm dark mysterious & spooky! Give me Dark UI!" It bothers me when these are the common responses from people. There are medical reasons why a person, not unlike myself would want & need a dark background & a lighter text. I think the ability to change color in an application is a must. Sadly most devs don't seem to think so. What if your application is being used by a color blind person & they can't see important data? While this can spin off into skins which normally turns into a nightmare I'm talking about some simple control over your colors. This stuck with white background & black text crap just makes me say we have such a great OS so whats with this MacOS color deal? Bright is the LAST thing I want to be starting at all day. If I want bright I'll go stare at the sun. Please don't hard code the colors or UI backgrounds or if you do allow for at least a few color schemes.
PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE!

"As we are on beos here, it would be logic to be able to record from any sound-producer node and not only from the default
soundcard audio-in node."

Yes, that would make sense, and that's what I've done in the app I'm developing(multi channel studio app).

Things are looking great Frans. I'd prefer if the GUI used the BeOS colors by default though, it's a bit too dark :) Other than that, it's solid and fast. I've experienced a few crashes, I'll file bugreports on them after further investigations.

Cool! Glad to see this is here! Will there be a PPC version?

I have yet to test it, but since I have been getting into PPC BeOS lately, I was wondering if a PPC version will be available.

This is sooo cool !!! At last a decent sample editor :)

It was a shame to not have a good sample editor on BeOS. You are filling an enormous gap.
It is a great idea to make it look and feel like Cooledit because me and a lot of people i know are using Cooledit as their main audio recorder and editor.
SampleStudio beta 1 seems to be very promising even if it doesn't have recording, tons of effects and multitrack yet.
I was amazed by the realtime effect preview, the overall responsiveness and the sharp and beossified cooledit ui :) , and couldn't manage to crash it yet :)

Just a suggestion about recording:
As we are on beos here, it would be logic to be able to record from any sound-producer node and not only from the default soundcard audio-in node. It could allow to run multiples instances of SampleStudio that records from different sound sources (hardware or software). And preparing for the upcoming(i hope you'll do it) multitrack recording ..
What are you planning?

Great job :), Really promising
Thanks...

Very Great application for THE Media-OS
