It seems that there is a frequent problem with Radeon 9000/9200 Mobility. If there is anyone having such a card and _no_ problems, please post a short notice on TalkBack, so I know whether its a general problem or a problem specific to some laptops. In terms of bug reports - please send them to my email address too as it's very hard for me to keep track which person has which problem and tried what. Thank you.

hmmm, even with the patch the driver doesn't work for me. I have an IGP340 (dev id 4337) and with the new driver the laptop crashes just when the desktop background is appearing (after the boot icons are all lit).
I am also having trouble getting the output of syslog, because when the laptop crashes I (obviously) can't read it and booting in safe mode seems to overwrite the syslog with the safe mode one (no mention of any radeon in the log). How can I get the log?
All help appreciated!
cheers,
Andrew
PS I'm using PhOS (dano) because R5 wouldn't install on my laptop (thinkpad R40e). Could this be the trouble?

Your card should be detected - it's in the driver under Radeon Mobility 9000. Perhaps the BIOS signature is unknown.
There are two things to be done: to find out whether the BIOS signature is the problem, I need your syslog (see my previous post). If this is the case, I need your graphics BIOS. For this, the source code package contains a directory "GetBIOS". In this, there are two paths: one for files to copy, one for links to copy. Just drag the file/link into the indicated folder. Then, execute the script located in the GetBIOS folder. This creates a file called "VGA BIOS.bin" that contains your graphics BIOS. Please mail that to me so I can extract the signature.

Hello !
I'm new to BeOS / Zeta (actually trying it...)
I've tried the original driver (install) and this one. None of them is working. I've followed the install instructions (erasing old drv's), but the "best" I got was Zeta booting in grey and white.
Sometimes it even froze on a blue screen (hey, I've seen that somewhere else before ;) )
My card is a Radeon Mobility 9000, Gericom Notebook.
Maybe its another Gericom problem ??
Everything else works fine as far as I could see....
Any ideas ?

This laptop-specific Fn-F4 trick is usually no good as this key is interpreted by the BIOS which reprograms the Radeon chip _in parallel_ to the driver. Obviously it assumes that there is no driver. Under W2k etc. the OS intercepts this key-combination and informs the driver about that, but this cannot be done under BeOS because it requires ACPI which is not supported under BeOS.
To make it short: I'm still interested in your syslog ;) To enable it, copy /boot/home/config/settings/kernel/drivers/sample/kernel to /boot/home/config/settings/kernel/drivers and uncomment the line "# syslog_debug_output true", i.e. remove the hash at the beginning of the line. Reboot and search for syslog.

Dual-screen support is very ASIC dependant, so the driver may use the wrong system on some ASICs. I tried to fix it in patch that can be downloaded under http://www.minet.uni-jena.de/~sveng/radeon2.accelerant

Thank you for the positive report. In terms of dual-monitor: BeOS only supports one screen with one workspace on it, so the only trick I found was to define a virtual large screen.

Hi,
On the laptop i switch from external and laptop display with F4+Fn (on some laptop it's the same).
I made this :
When i get boot menu, i go on Eizo screen only
BeOS boot, and display is OK (800*600 16bts 60Hz set with RadeonScreen), and after if i come back on laptop screen it's ok too !!!!
It not work if I let BeOS booting with display on Laptop.
Thx,

Running great on this HIS Radeon 9200VIVO PCI Card under 5.1d0, earlier versions gave me some stability issues, but now it seems fine, although I'm unable to get multimonitor (Hydravision) working correctly... If I combine displays I get the same half of the combined screen area through both monitors (this is the first time I've tried multi-monitor under BeOS, so I can't comment on if earlier versions worked).
If I understand how this works correctly with multi-monitor, It stretches the desktop area over two monitors. Would it be possible to make the driver behave more like Hydravision under Windows, where I have a fully functional desktop on monitor A and a blank desktop (with no menu, icons etc.) on monitor B, which I can freely drag my applications across to. Maybe I'm being fussy, but this seems to be a preferable solution as it wouldn't distort my wallpaper, applications etc.
Anyway, keep up the great work, it's definently highly appreciated by many of us. Thankyou.

The "crashing after a couple of minutes" problem was the one that almost made me go mad for two years and is finally fixed with v3.3.0 and up (at least noone told the opposite). In terms of invalid TFT signal with this version, I would like to get a syslog to see the whished TFT timing. Could you also try to connect to an external monitor to check whether you get a valid signal there?

Hi,
Yes 3.3.0 or 3.3.1 have the same result, problems with refresh rate, the tft screen of the laptopn blink, have double line etc ... (same effect when you try to apply a bad refresh rate), but not appear with 3.2.8.
For the second problem, with the 3.2.8 (the version work without refresh rate problem) after 10 or 15 minutes of use, when i click on a menu or try to move a window, i just see the text moving. Imagine the window transparent and just see the text of menu.
And when i have this problem, when i move i have not the screen refresh the display.
it's ok ?

FYI, 3.2.8 works fine :-)
I can give you a debug log from 3.2.8 if it helps figure out the problem.

And I and up the kernel debugger land. I'm gonna grab an older version from BeShare for the time being :-)

This does not work with the Radeon Mobility 9200 (basically a 9000 with AGP 8x). It does not get detected at all.

I had been using the previous driver with no problems since day one, but now I can't seem to be able to use the dual monitor split (it's just mirroring everything).
Do you have the previous drivers handy?

Hi I have Radeon 9000pro (multi-monitor support untested) and it works ok. I have one question should the two monitors show the same info? I have the BeOS Max (latest).

I tried to add IGP support. To test it, install v3.3.0 and replace radeon2 with http://www.minet.uni-jena.de/~sveng/radeon2 Please mail me the result (syslog would be nice ;)
Apart from that: thank you for the positive feedback. Seems that I finally found a way to get rid of the nasty crashes!

Thomas, this new version doesn't crash any more on my laptop Radeon 9000.
This is the first version to work normally and i don't have to use the VESA mode now. Thank you.

I have a Radeon 32MB SDR, and for me (BeOS 5.0 PE) the newest driver (3.3.0) shows the same symptoms as described by Decaf. Sorry to have to confirm this, but also big THANKS for the good work!!!

Yes, it's a first generation Radeon. (Maybe time to upgrade as you seem to do a great job with up to date drivers.)

I tried to send you an email, but your mailserver refused it (gmx.de doesn't accept mails from gmx.net !?). Could you please send me a different address?
