Separate screen resolution?
 By DJMaytag - Posted on January 19, 2004 - 01:44:49   (#10645)
Current version when comment was posted: v3.2.8
Any word on if separate sreen resolution might ever be a reality? It may not be that big a deal for me soon, as I'm hoping to get a 2nd 19" monitor and have them both run at the same resolution, but a 19" & 15" running at 1152x864 is a bit rough (speaking of the 15" that is, the 19" is at the perfect resolution for me, even though I'd like so shoot it up to 1280x1024)

I'll take the buggy driver

Any chance I could get that buggy driver sent to me via email? It'd certainly be better than one that doesn't work at all (ATI9700Pro + DVI LCD = no worky). I'd be perfectly willing to test and send whatever you need.

Email is agildehaus -at- charter -dot- net. Thx.

Sorry, have not read all messages here before I posted.

Thomas, great to hear you're back on track;) - I sent you a mail but I guess you were too busy after regenerating from the flu:^)

I am willing to help you tracking down that nasty overlay-bug with testing and sending syslog-output or whatever, just get into contact with me at rosenauer-NOSPAM-at-gmx.at

Thanks again for your excellent work,

System crash with vlc - Overlay-bug?
 By Hugh - Posted on January 17, 2004 - 14:43:41   (#10616)
Current version when comment was posted: v3.2.8
Thanks a lot for the great driver - esp. having overlay-support is a great thing.
However there seems to be a nasty bug with the overlay-code (or BeOS' app_server):

When using vlc and switching from fullscreen back to normal mode, but even in normal mode, I experience regular system-lockups when stopping the movie or quitting vlc (latest version 0.7 final).

This happens often when you play some movie-files one after the other, and switching to fullscreen and back also seems to produce the crash.

Anyone else experiences this?
I have a RadeonVE (aka 7000?) with card ID 5159 and 64MB DDR RAM, running BeOS Max v3 (my original Pro was getting too old for a fresh install;).

PS: Kudos to ATI for the great support! Thanks a lot, you rock!

I rewrote much of the monitor detection code since the last release and wanted to publish the new version already a month ago. Unfortunately, I have serious problems in terms of stability (system crashes randomly and using overlays makes it even worse), so I cannot really post it. I wanted to dig into this problem over christmas, but I had a flu, so coding was a no-go. I'll try to get rid of the stability problems, but I cannot really tell how long this will take as I've pursuing it for over a month already and still have no idea where it stems from.

Flat-panel problems
 By topical - Posted on January 15, 2004 - 13:18:37   (#10573)
Current version when comment was posted: v3.2.8
The detection of flat panel resolution depends on the connector: if it's a Laptop's flat panel, it's read from the BIOS, if it is connected via DVI, parameters are read out via DDC. If this doesn't work for any reason, the resolution is kind of reverse engineered from the screen mode set by the BIOS. It seems that this doesn't always work, therefore I call it fallback ;)

So, please tell me how it is connected (Laptop/DVI-D/DVI-I), so I know the precise circumstances.

In terms of resolution restrictions: for flat panels, the graphics card always scales the image to the flat panels native resolution. As it can only scale up, you can never choose a resolution higher then the native resolution of the flat panel. But if the native resolution is detected incorrectly, you get a problem as no higher resolution can be choosen.

To mictlantecuhtli: It seems that the driver has trouble reading DDC information from you monitor. The piece of syslog you posted is the fallback detection. Please send me your entire syslog so I can see what goes wrong with DDC.

To tb100: there seem to be a problem reading the panel size from BIOS. Again: please send me the syslog.

To binoi@gmx.de: please tell me tell how the panel is connected and send me your syslog. Obviously, flat panel detection is wrong.

No, for me the driver (not this one - it doesnt work at all for my 9600pro but the R300 one) just don't use resolutions higher than 1024x768 on my flat-panel. If I change to higher it seems it changed (it asks me if I want to keep and so on ...). But nothing really happens. An when I open the screen prefs again the next time it shows me the old resolution again as choosed one. When I decrease resolution (lets say choose 800x600) it works correct.

greetings,
Boris

Flat-panel resolution problems
 By tb100 - Posted on January 14, 2004 - 11:47:29   (#10534)
Current version when comment was posted: v3.2.8
There have been a number of reports, here and on Euan's "intermediate" driver, of DVI panels having their refresh set incorrectly.

Maybe this is the same problem I experienced on a friend's laptop, where the panel should have been at 1024x768, but was detected as 800x600. As with the other reporters, screen prefs didn't change this.

It seems the resolution is set one "notch" down from what it should be - 1024x768 is set to 800x600, 1280x1024 is set to 1024x768, and 1600x1200 is set to 1280x1024.

If I set it to 75 Hz and check what the monitor says,
I get:

H. frequency 81.499 kHz
V. frequency 77.0 Hz
Pixel clock 140.50 MHz

Not that it really matters when using a TFT display ;)

I'm using Hercules Prophet All-in-Wonder Radeon 9800SE, 128MB, otherwise works just fine but I can't set resolution to 1600x1200 no matter what. When I click "Apply changes", nothing changes, resolution stays at 1280x1024. I'd like to use 1600x1200 because it's my monitor's native resolution and scaling at 1280x1024 doesn't look good. Monitor is ViewSonic VP201s. The card has only DVI-D out.

I noticed 3.2.7 is the last version that works for R5.
The driver itelsf with 3.2.8 works but the Radeon Screen gives a missing symbols error.

As a temporary solution I've put up last working driver here:

I've got an IBM T40 Series Thinkpad Notebook that has a Radeon 9000 Mobility. I experience these overlay and crash problems quite regularly. I'd be willing to help test and send you any debug data you request.

I also use this driver on my Desktop's 9200 and I want you to know how deeply I appreciate all of your hard work!

I've written several programs for the BeOS--available here on BeBits--and work as a professional programmer. I don't know much about drivers, but I can help you debug if you want the help.

Thanks again for your work on this driver!

Zeta workaround

While waiting for SP2: It seems that with Zeta, the driver is misled when calculating clock frequencies, resulting in overly high refresh rates.
Booting into Zeta with a Dano boot floppy fixes this for me.
I can only guess that somewhat similar to the VESA file problem, Zeta is initializing the card into a different mode during boot than R5 and Dano.

There are at least two bugs in the overlay code I encountered too; I've fixed already one (leading to garbage on top of screen) but the second one is a bit harder (system crashes when you use overlays). As I'm restructuring the driver currently, it will take a bit until I can release a proper fix.

On my Radeon 7000/VE card (Connect3D) overlay is virtually unusable. It crashes frequently with StampTV, VLC, TV, TV+, etc. Never with Media Player, oddly enough

Luckily I have enough CPU to do bitmap drawing of video in most apps but StampTV doesn't seem to have an option to disable Overlay. So I'm going to have to see can I cut it out of the driver meself :-)

Yeah TK's driver doesn't work in Zeta for me either. I can't seem to get the console debugging to work either. So I can't even see why it doesn't work. I tried my own version of the driver and it is the exact same.

I posted a message on www.yellowtab.com and Bernd says it's fixed in SP2. No date given.

http://www.yellowtab.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=1253

Even though this version of Zeta is supposed to be a developer version I didn't see any developer stuff other than the complier. Maybe I should look again. Maybe the driver just needs recompiled? I tried that but it came up with a missing header or similar. So I decided to turn the PC off and go slit my wrists with a windows XP CD instead. :)

I can only have 800x600 with 75 hz. Higher, zeta test the resolution but fall back to 800x600 immediatly.

My radeon is a Hercule Prophet 9700, and works perfectly under R5 with your last driver.

By the way, thanks a LOT for your incredible work. You deserve a medal for what you're doing for the beos community !

VLC blocks the BeOS Screen Saver while watching at fullscreen, successfully. But after a screen swap with Radeon Screen Preferences, the screen saver always appears at the specified intervall! The screen saver's graphics seems to flash at some areas because of the underlying video. I don't know if this is VLC's fault, driver's fault or my system's fault. But I never had this problem before the new driver release...

I am using the old preferences panel, because the new one has some linking problems.

I am now getting a very color full desktop with lots vertical line and can move my mouse from one side of the screen to the other. the mouse pointer is in the shape of a 1" square. To get the syslog I rebooted windows 98 to the msdos promt and use beos.com to reboot beos pro. Choose console debugging from the boot menu and it generated a full system log. Can't really make out the desktop very well but mouse travel the full width length of the screen stopping in all 4 cornners. The log tells a lot about the loading radeon2 driver.

I need some help here. I have BeOS Dev edition up and running on a custom built Athlon system with a nVidia GeForce 3 video card. No problems there. The problem is when I try to install BeOS onto my HP pavilion ze4100 with the ATI Radeon IGP 340. I get the normal BeOS boot screen, but as it finishes booting, I lose color and the screen view shrinks to a 640x480 window, 8bit B&W, with black borders. I tried running the installer CD as a Live CD and changing the screen and Radeon preferences, but it does't help. I tried downloading the new BeOS Max v3, but I get a shell error just as the installer is about to load. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get things up and running? I don't even need full 2D acceleration right now; I just want to get Be running on my laptop with full screen mode and color. Does anyone know if the new Zeta addresses issues such as these? If anyone knows of a workaround, I would be extremely grateful. Send any info you might have on the matter to my email address: r_benchley@yahoo.com

Recompiled driver, accell and preference under BeOS 5.03 with no errors or warnings (nice coding), preferences now works ok. Support for two monitors and screen modes works prefectly.

So far I have had the screen blank out sections of the screens twice but recovered with no losses or crashes by killing and restarting the OpenTracker_x86_5.2b261.pkg, if there any further problems I will go back to the original tracker and see if problems are fixed.

FYI, the driver will work with my 9800, but doesn't run the dualhead properly. I can select a "Combine Displays" option, but I still get a clone on the secondary head. Nor can I "pan" around a larger screen (though I can keep moving my mouse and windows will be placed outside of the visible screen area).

Euan's driver (which I've reverted to for the time being) does handle the dual head properly.
