It's still good for laptop users.

Sorry about the quiet spell for the last week or so. I've now got a laptop with an ATI chipset in it. However it was a nightmare getting BeOS on it. I eventually managed to get Zeta Neo running after removing all the drivers, and putting them back one at a time!
I also don't have any debug facility, as the ethernet is working, but not properly (I can ping people, but can't get any websites up etc), and the laptop doesn't have serial ports, just infra-red, and my usb-serial adapter isn't supported.
So it's going to be a long slow process...

Maybe we can do it on http://www.haikubounties.org
I could easily pay some money for this.
A 3D ATI driver is already suggested as a future bounty under the general fund by the site owner.
It would also be nice to know if yellowtab´s X-series driver comming in Zeta 1.2 is based on this one. If not, is it open source?

I don't think it would be appropriate given the original author Thomas as probably spent 20x the amount of time on it that I have. And we have seen what happens when people charge for drivers. Having Axel fully paid is different, or doing a sponsored project is also fine. I feel, sending me monetary donations would also put a financial obligation on me to support people. he he can't have that.
I would accept donations / loans of hardware however, as it does directly help the cause and saves me a ton of time. If could get my hands on an Disfunctional (video driver wise) Ati laptop I could get it fixed and continue with my life. I plan to get one soon one day. :)
Thanks for the kind charitable thoughts though. Very much appreciated.

I just tested the 5.1.5.4 driver on my X600se.
That one causes my display to switch off, at the point the desktop is usually shown.
So I am using the 5.1.5.0 again, which i thought was 100% fine.
I noticed that it has some refresh problems here and there.

I think I'm going take a few days to sit down and go through the code line by line, comparing against X. I might individually email some of you custom drivers, as there seems to be at least 3 separate issues:
1. Backlights not coming on
2. Baclklights on, LCD selected but no signals sent to panel (most likely the heads are swapped)
3. Monitor routing decides not to use the LCD at all. i.e. it sends output to svideo, or CRT.
In X they have the ability to manually define the routing and this seems necessary for a lot of cases. Especially if your using a laptop, and more so if it has a second video output. As far as I can tell this isn't supported at all, yet.

Hi, just tested the .3 and .4, and as with the 5.1.5.1, I get no display at all. As I already described, since the .1 change I don't see anything at all anymore on the LCD. With the 5.1.5 I at least saw the contents shining through. Just the backlight was not enabled at all.
Switching to a connected CRT is fine and I have no garbage at all. Just the damn backlight enabling was/is missing since the 5.1.5 version.
I post here, not that the E-Mail gets lost again:

Kancept, I have similar issues as you, however, using the hard screen switcher just looses my CRT video, and it will never come back. :(
The new driver did the same as the last for me. When I used the force_lcd setting, the boot screen had funny colors (both monitors) and then CRT was washed out and I don't think it ever finished booting, as the laptop never gave an audible "start" sound. :(
Euan, you have syslog email.

well, the last 2 versions of the driver haven't done anything for me, but I have found out more info.
I tried plugging in an external monitor and it worked, while my LCD screen did not. By cycling through the screen options on my laptop (Fn+F3) to go from LCD, external, both, etc, it worked. So it was workable and working (this is all in ZETA 1.2, BTW). The monitor didn't have to be plugged in during boot, I also plugged it in after the desktop was alive and then cycled, and it worked as well. I do have to disable user add-ons or I get KDL'd during boot. This is the only addon I have in the home addons dirs.
I then tried not having a monitor hooked up all. Got the same original results, a washed out screen. I tried pushing the display close button, though (like closing the screen on the laptop then opening it back up) and it worked. So now all I need to do is figure out the user addon thing, then open/close the lid and everything is fine.
I do have a syslog for you, but don't know where to email it to. Just let me know and I'll send it to you. Maybe we can do this without having to hit the button each time.
Thanks!

No significant changes other than:
you can specify a setting in the boot options menu (under "Advanced Safe Mode options")
Enter "radeon.settings:force_lcd true" which forces (so I believe) the LCD screen to added to the top of possible output devices. Not really useful to people with the no baclkight option, but for those who seem to have their laptop flat panel skipped over.
Connector routing debug is printed in human readable format, eg DVI-I, DVI, PRIMARY DAC.
Flat panel control registers are printed out at driver startup. Hopefully before the original cold-start settings are lost.

As stated before in my E-Mail the switch to the other CRTC (not that I know any details about that) seems to cause no display of graphics at all. I also have to switch 4 times (monitor switch key) to get output if I attach a CRT instead of only once. (X600 Mobility M24 PCIe)
The DPMS trick didn't do it either. I should try this with the 5.1.5 one.

Hi,
V5.1.5.0 works ok
V5.1.5.1 gives me a Black screen. I tried your screensaver sleep-mode trick without success, but im not realy sure that the screen really went to sleep (or was woken up) at all cause i didnt see the smallest glitch when i moved the mouse. Later i tried setting suspent screen to 1 minute in BIOS, booted up in blackscreen and waited, this time when i moved the mouse i got a small wakeup glitch and back to black.
This is on a IBM T43 with X300 running Zeta 1.1

This fixes the drawing problem.
Changed the DPMS code a fair bit to match X
I've only changed 1 line in the flat panel code, which seemed to be forcing the flatpanel to always use the 2nd CRTC output.
If the backlight doesn't come on, then reboot into vesa mode, set the power saving delay in the screensaver preferences to 1 minute. Reboot in normal mode, wait about 3 minutes, making sure the mouse isn't moved to allow the screen to sleep, then try waking it up. The DPMS code should effectively force on the backlight. if that doesn't work then either the driver is turing on the wrong device output, or that the driver doesn't have control of the backlight which I think is unlikely. The latter meaning it's either controlled by the bios, or ACPI which I'll need to investigate.

If I enable console debugging during boot, the display works correctly- accelerated and all. If I boot normally, I get the washed out screen. I am going to set the debugging in my kernel config file, as it's just like the ps/2 issue with another machine I have. Enabled serial debugging , not syslog debugging, and it works. If that helps figure it out, then let me know and I'll help all I can, but it's working great atm. Now to see if the same werks in ZETA.

Euan,
Put this new driver on my laptop... It only recognizes the VGA output. The laptop LCD screen stays black after the boot screen (Zeta 1.1), but the CRT connected not only shows with accelerated graphics, but goes into 1680x1050 res (which is the laptop's widescreen LCD's max res).
I remember Rudolf had simialar issues with one of my previous laptops with nVidia, and I set up the dual head app to clone the screen and it worked. But with this driver, it doesn't recognize that there is another screen, so it won't allow cloned screen mode - the only option is single mode. The Zeta Screen prefs panel also only shows the one screen - but still automatically pulled the higher res. I tried "swap screens", but that didn't do anything - only one screen recognized. :(
Anyways, I hope this info helps to get the LCD of other X600 laptops (and mine) working! :)

Hi Euan,
unfortunately I have no enable/disable backlight option. Only a setting for the brightness of the backlight.
The CRT distortion just seemed to be related to the one CRT I used. Tested with another one @1024x768 and things are very fine. I then set the laptop panel setting in the screen prefs to "always", but this doesn't seem to help. Seems to be the "same" result as my earlier experiments with the source of the driver always enabling the lcd-panel option whenever encountered in the source.
