Hi, I have a Radeon 9000 M9 Mobility with the card ID of 4c66, I was wondering of it's possible to get this working with the Radeon driver. Or instructions on what to change and maybe then I could build the source myself...
Keep up the good work! :D)

As it seems, Thomas will get a new card to play with / write a driver for soon (hopefully). In the meantime I provide my "hacked" version of the 3.2.6 driver that supports the R300 chips (Radeon 9700/9500).
The driver supports:
* resolution/refreshrate changes
* BDirectWindow
* Hardware Overlay (VLC plays DVD's much smoother now :)
* Hardware Cursor
The driver can be found here:
http://mypage.bluewin.ch/mmlr/beos/RadeonDriver_3.2.6R300.pkg.zip
It is mainly the pure 3.2.6 source with disabled (not working) acceleration functions and some patch to work arround the command-processor that cannot be used on R300 until now. It's not a solution, but until Thomas can write a fully working driver I think it's much better than VESA-Mode.

I've updated the latest source code tree of Thomas driver and now it recognizes correctly the ATI Radeon IGP 320m chip; however, the worst problem relies to the accelerant. The damn thing does not work no matter what I do and keeps locking up my machine. I've been working on this project for some days now, but Thomas haven't replied on any of my mails requesting for more info.
Therefore I give up on the effort and in BeOS in general. If anyone want's to continue the effort, you can get the source tarball from my site
http://net314.myphone.gr/RadeonIGPsrc.zip
Too bad, I've wanted to use BeOS, however I can't do much development without any help. It seems a dead project to me.
So long...

Hello,
I do hope too that Thomas will implement support for Radeon IGP 320m as it is an extremely common chipset used on new notebooks (and the only one used on Athlon XP notebooks).
I tried to modify the detect.c file from the previous version, but no matter what the driver does not detect it. One question: the card ID reported by BeOS is 4336, is this equivallent to 0x4336 on the detect.c listing or it is a decimal value?

I modified the source files and got it working with my 9200. I received a couple emails from people trying to get theirs to work. Use the regular .pkg installer, then find and replace the radeon2 file from this archive:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/gsc70/radeon2.zip
And the source file I modified:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/gsc70/detect.c.zip
This should work until the fix is made part of the official release.

I have a Mobility Radeon 9000 w/ 128M in my laptop, and the driver seems a little flaky with it. Sometimes it works for a while, but it will slow down after a while, with symptoms like those reported for the Mobility 7500 by an earlier poster, or downright crash with a black screen. Interesting symptom is that font anti-aliasing seems to be wrong.
If I can help in any way, Thomas, just let me know.

1. you use the version link and download the 3.2.6 source
2. unzip and navigate to radeon/distribute
3. install the RadeonDriver_v3.2.6.pkg file (to setup the driver and settings panel)
4. navigate to radeon/beos/radeon_accelerant
5. open the radeon_accelerant.proj with BeIDE
6. open the GetAccelerantHook.c file by double clicking
7. comment out all three HOOK's under "cursor management"
8. comment out all four HOOK's under "2D acceleration"
9. comment out all nine HOOK's under "overlay"
10. hit command-m to compile the project
11. move the new radeon2.accelerant file to /boot/home/config/add-ons/accelerants replacing the one installed by the package above
12. use VesaAcceped to set your boot-up vesa mode to 640x480x16 (I get some very strange colors / refresh rates if it doesn't switch to vesa during boot)
10. reboot and see if it worked
You won't gain any speed with this hack (since you disabled all the acceleration functions), but you will be able to set resolution, color-depth and refresh rates, saving your eyes from that 60hz vesa mode.
Note: it is possible that the driver switchs the output-port if you have a card with more than one output (vga and dvi for example). If your screen is black after booting, try plugging your monitor to the other output-port.
Running a HIS Excalibur Radeon 9700 Pro with 1280x1024x32 @ 90hz here :-).

I'm using a Radeon 7000 VE, with a digital flat panel. I notice the pixels are shifted to the left 4 pixels, and it wraps around to the other side. Even funnier yet, is the fact that it also has the "mouse map" shifted. SO if I click here, I've actually clicked 4 pixels to the left, visually. So I think the "whole" thing is shifted, and if it's using a hardware mouse cursor, it's not shifting with it. I'd be glad to try anything you need me to try.

The brand new on the market 9200 didn't work at first, but I added the product id to the last publish source code. It seems to be working pretty decent so far, but I haven't tested it heavily. Very speedy display. I was told that the 9200 is a replacement for the 9000. Product id is 0x5961. Thanks for your work Thomas!

My laptop contains the U1 chipset, which is not supported by this driver. From what I know, after hunting for a driver in windows (which ATI doesn't provide), the chipset is very similar to the ones this driver already supports.
In fact, in windows, I use the latest catalyst drivers which were only modified to add the ID of this line of cards to the setup files.
If there's some simple things I can try on my own to "fool" it into working as is done in windows, please let me know.
The card ID is 4336
Thanks for your work,

Hello,
iI've been using this driver for a while now, and it is very stable, no crashes at all.
but there is a problem when I try to combine the displays,. The desktop is extended, and I can scroll around like the way it would work with only one monitor.
But withtwo monitors connected they both display the same picture, Iwould like to have one half of the desktop on one monitor and the other half on the second monitor of course.
I'm using a radeon VE 32 mb AGP card
does anyone know how to achieve this?
Thanks,
Richard

I have a Sony VAIO GR114EK and would be interested in trying out your utils for battery status/screen and jogdial if they should support this model. Good luck with the Radeon driver it works fine on my laptop and has done so from reasonably early verions of this driver. It had some lookups in the really early betas (and some screen artifacts) but this was all cleaned up.

This driver works great on my Sony GRX-316MP (with Radeon 7500 Mobility) - typically for about 5 minutes.
After 5 minutes or so, the graphics driver seems to go extremely slow (as in several minutes of refreshing little bits of the screen) - sometimes it goes blank, and/or locks up the machine completely.
Is this a known problem? Any workarounds? I'm getting my dev. environment set up now (already knocked together a driver+applet to talk to the Sony power management system for battery status, screen brightness control etc.) so I'm happy to start looking at any debug output and tweak around with internals of the driver - but never played with a BeOS graphics driver before so not really sure where to start.
I *really* want to crack this one - using the Vesa driver is horrendously slow, and BeOS looks stunning on this machine with the ATI driver whilst it stays up! Soon as I get this working and finish adding jogdial support I'm tempted to say goodbye to XP for good.
(Sony specs for this laptop state 32 Mb RAM on-chip, 32 Mb off-chip - any chance this is a problem?)

hi,
I'm experiencing hard times with my laptop bought last year. I am using Win XP home Edition to watch DVD films on a TV. So I must use TV out plug to connect them together. (TV out is a S-VIDEO output plug). GEFORCE 4.
Unfortunately, this plug must be enabled through Win XP, which is not making this choice always possible.( the radio is grayed, I mean inactive )
I thoroughly read my hardware manuals. Then I followed the described way. It was working 1 time out of 10 or 20. Has someone a turnaround to make it work fine ?
Does anyone knows how I can fix this issue ?
Best regards.

this is a reply on a message by looncraz back few months.
there are some strong reasons why it is better to have a release synchronized with the windows (catalyst) driver.
- it fixes bugs if any.
- it contains speed tweaks and other performance enhancements
writing a driver from specs theoretically should produce a working product, but if there is a design flaw or something, you wouldn't know it.
lets just hope ati will be more open in the future. but thank you thank you thank you for making this driver. it saves lives you know.

Why would we care about changes to Windows drivers?
This driver is based on specifications, not some Windows driver.
Anyway, I can see that if the error were related to specs how the problem could find its way to our beloved OS, but I don't think we are effected by drivers for Windows.
